After reading a HOST of mediocre Christian Fiction, Siri Mitchell has once again given me hope in the genre. After a litter of amish and pioneer subjects - Siri does not disappoint when it comes to historical fiction. And once more, her characters are multi-dimensional and interesting! They are not boring and predictable. Oh, Siri I could just HUG you for this book! Thank you!Clara is a bright, intelligent woman who dreams of going to Vassar College. She lives with her wealthy, but distant and somewhat mysterious father and prickly aunt - an ambitious and socially-driven woman who is determined to help her niece marry the "catch of the ton" - Franklin de Vries. Clara is socially-anxious and is constantly concerned with what she should do and say. A welcome relief to her circle is Harold de Vries, the congenial younger brother. Her lifelong friend, Lizzie, is also a lifeline to her in this foreign land of intrigues and alterior motives. The supporting characters are just as interesting! How did her father really earn his fortune? Were the de Vries really responsible for ruining the Carter fortune decades ago? Is a marriage between Franklin and Clara for revenge? My ONLY regret is that I finished this book in one day and now there is no more! Siri Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in Christian Fiction. These characters are fresh, the storyline is unique and ingenuitive. And Siri is a genius. Do yourself a favor. Buy DON'T BORROW this book. You'll want to read it again.

I have hundreds of books on my Kindle. Aaaand sometimes when I check books out at the library (as I did with this one) I don't realize that I already have it in my collection. So when I was about 3/4 of the way through with this book that I was enjoying so much, I looked on my Kindle to see if I had any other books by Siri Mitchell, and happy, happy, joy, joy, this very book was on it, which made me exceedingly happy because this will be a book I will read again and again. This is the first book I've read by this author and I was instantly hooked with the authors style. Perhaps this is also because it is written in first person (my favorite POV) and I don't often read many Christian historicals in first. I was fascinated by all her details about New York high society during the Gilded Age. The details were incorporated in such a humorous way through the eyes of the main character that I found myself chuckling at a lot at her blunders. The characters were fun, but the story is also tempered with a serious note and a Christian message: Does God love me just as I am? Because of some of the topics that are revealed and addressed, I would not recommend this to younger teens. It is a clean book and a sweet romance unfolds, but some of the themes might be best for older teens and adults.I'm checking out more of this author's books, and am happy to have this in my collection to be able to read again.

Clara Carter was a young debutante in New York City. She lived with her father and her aunt. It was the season of coming out, with balls and dinners and operas; the way to be seen by many so as to catch a husband. The family set their sites on the heir of the wealthiest family in high society. The rest of the book basically is Clara and her best friend trying to get his attention so that one or the other could marry him. it took a very long time for the gist the book to be written. At 65% through the book I still couldn't figure out where it was going. The last few chapters really got going and I enjoyed the conflicts and resolutions. The book was fairly well written, but not knowing what the book is actually about for so very long was a bother. It was almost entirely about what balls they attended, what restaurant they went to, what opera they were seen at, and about what gowns they were wearing, what they ate, and conversations in between. Friendly competition for the heir seemed to be the only plot.I appreciate at the end all the things Clara learned and how she turned out . She grew up a lot, She gained wisdom and she faced many things that she needed to face. She turned into the woman she really needed to be and wanted to be.S

Review

Phyllis Chesler is by far the bravest and most outspoken American feminist to address the plight of Muslim women. I recommend (that her work) be put on the reading list of every American school. --Ayaan Hirsi AliTo read Phyllis Chesler is to encounter one of the most challenging and original minds in the world today. --Alan DershowitzPhyllis Chesler unveils one of the most dramatic domestic and international problem of our times; that of Islamic gender apartheid, analyzed by a daring and politically incorrect lover of truth.--Bat Ye'orPhyllis Chesler brings an eloquent and righteous anger to bear against Western feminists for their dual habit of overlooking the plight of Muslim women and blaming Israel, by far the Middle East's most feminist country, for the woes of that region.--Daniel Pipes

#1,059,127 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

It is not always--or even often--possible to get a clear picture of an author's character and integrity from reading her work; there are plenty of brilliant, insightful and illuminating books penned by reprehensible cads. In "Islamic Gender Apartheid" however, Dr. Chesler's character and sense of honor shines through as brightly as her crystal clarity and laser-like focus. Her impatience with those who would muddy the waters of discourse with supine homage to political correctness made me want to cheer.I have generally identified as a man of the right but have never moved in lockstep with orthodox conservatism. As Dr. Chesler so eloquently establishes in her book, lockstep conformity--on the right or the left--is not only childish and unnecessary but profoundly destructive to social progress in a free market of ideas. I literally believe I am a clearer thinker having read this brilliant woman's book.

There is no voice I know of like the voice of Phyllis Chesler. First of all, it takes enormous moral stamina to visit the episodes of cruel discrimination against women that she documents here. Second, although many who learn of such incidents privately deplore and regret them, Chesler actually says what most of us only think. That in itself is an education. From reading her words, which say what we only think, we learn what honestly sounds like if only we dared to exhibit it ourselves. Personally I feel grateful for this book and for Phyllis Chesler's influence in the world. She's one of the heroes of our time.

As usual an important read from Dr Chesler. An academic that hasn’t given in to political correctness. This shows that all through the last 20 years she has been ahead on so many issues and especially gender apartheid in the Islam world. It is time for the politicians and the self proclaimed “activists” to listen.

Great Writing and Insightview of the fascianting but also highly repressive culture and fascinating account of perseverance and personal struggle in confinement

One of the best authors out there writing about the scourge of Islam and its war against all non-Muslims AND Muslim women. It's a shame that most feminists have abandoned actual women's rights if those women are Muslim. Instead, today's "feminists" (with the exception of Chesler, Paglia, and maybe a couple of others) rally about Leftist causes and ignore the actual plight of Muslim women trapped in Islamic countries or cultures. Women in Islamic countries (and elsewhere) are often the victims of honor killings, stonings, beatings, and are often unable to follow their own dreams and make their own choices. Highly recommend this book-- I hesitate saying I "enjoyed" it, because the subject matter isn't enjoyable. It was, however, well-written and fascinating to read.

This journalistic foray into the lives of women living under Islamic gender apartheid was powerful, illuminating, and eye-opening. A must-read for truth-seekers and independent thinkers who refused to go with the herd.A brutal account of the realities of Islamic gender apartheid that should be required reading at every college. Dr. Chesler provides years of frontline reporting, giving her readers glimpses into the personal stories and tragedies of countless women living in oppressive structures that both shock and provide clarity into eastern cultures.

Phyllis Chesler deserves praise for bringing greater awareness to this important topic.

This is a guide for patients considering fertility treatments written by a former fertility patient. Bianca Smith states 'this is everything I wish I had known before starting my fertility treatments.' The content is readable and supportive. Bianca reviews tips on trying to conceive naturally, tips for choosing a fertility clinic, IUI vs. IVF, and alternative treatment options. She includes some fertility friendly recipes and a lot of tips for self care through the roller coaster ride of treatments. Bianca's passion for helping others comes through in her writing - the book reads like she is your fertility coach. She stays positive but gets real and leaves you with tools and resources to help you through.

Bianca has put together a comprehensive look at the ins and outs of IVF treatment, from what different treatment options consist of to tips on managing the stress of the process from other IVF veterans. This is truly a guide that can prepare you physically and emotionally for IVF. She's obviously done extensive research, yet the book is written as if you were having a conversation with your best girlfriend. It's so easy to read and follow. I also like that it includes resources for more information on various aspects of IVF, including avenues for emotional support, which is so vital for patients on this journey. I didn't do IVF, and learned a lot from reading this guide at how extensive and intense it can be. I really appreciate Bianca for putting this book together! As a fertility coach, I'm sure I'll often consult this book as a reference as I work with clients who embark on the IVF path to build their families. I look forward to recommending this guide to clients to help them on their fertility journeys.

So helpful!

This helps anyone who needs an inside look at fertility from an intervention stand point. Found it helpful when going through fertility issues myself.

This book is a good summary of IVF. From procedures, info resources, medical resources and recommended blogs. The author makes wonderful recommendations based on her research and experience in (almost) bullet point format. Easy read packed with information an IVF patients-to-be must know.

I have been through one round of IVF and I wish I had this book prior. I found great information as I get ready for the next round. IVF is an emotional journey and this book makes it less overwhelming. Thanks Bianca!

Great read! The author is humble, authentic, informative & supportive. She's walked the road & left no stone unturned. Grateful!

I wish I would have had access to this resource before I decided to proceed with my IVF. I appreciate that this book not only has the practical information needed to make a decision, but it also has information from those that have already gone through the IVF process. I find it helpful to hear first hand what others have experienced versus only trusting what doctors and clinics tell you. Plus I love the mixture of facts, advice and other tips Bianca provided from fertility coaches, advocates, etc. There are so many things to consider when deciding on infertility treatment options. This IVF book provides so much valuable information in one place, so you can take your time and read what others have already researched for you. In the end it is such a personal decision and has to be right for you and your circumstance. But Bianca has taken the time to bring the overwhelming process into a condensed, concise resource.

Well I was trying to help mother in law out with her no salt low sodium diet. I am not sure she got any help from this book. I believe she is looking for something simpler. I am not saying it didn't help her at all and it's not a great book but I got this as a gift to help her. I should have done some reading through it first!

Great recipes! My husband is unable to have sodium and I have to learn how to cook all over again.

My husband is on a low or no salt diet. I searched a lot of cookbooks but never found one to my liking until this one. Great recipies and I could not really tell ta huge difference between cooking with salt and cooking without. I purchased no sodium baking soda and baking powder and tried some muffin recipies as well as other baking recipies and I could not tell the difference at all. This is now my right hand cookbook. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to lower their salt intake.

This is a great little cook book! A life saver! My best friend has severe health issues, and can NOT have ANY salt. Do you know how hard it is to find any processed food with little or no salt? Near impossible! He loves the book, and we would recommend it to anyone with salt issues in their diet.

Love this book, helped me lower my sodium significantly.

Great book. The recipes are not complicated. There are some no salt ingredients that I could not find locally but I found them online at amazon instead. I already and going to try and make something for my dad for Christmas. It is nice to have a book rather than looking up recipes online.

Like this cookbook for salt free diets

Very useful in keeping salt intake down with tasty food.

On the plus side, it's all five books in one volume. However, in "Life, the Universe, and Everything" and "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish," the text has been edited to be more "American," and a number of the jokes are gone altogether (e.g. The Rory award is no longer for the gratuitous use of the word "Belgium" in a screenplay; it's for the gratuitous use of the word "f***" in a screenplay). Won't be noticed by anyone who has never read the series, but I hate the editing changes as I know what used to be there!

Douglas Adams was my first introduction to British humor. As a kid that grew up in rural MO during the pre-internet era, this book was one of the first indications I had that the world outside my little cow-filled bubble was a much bigger place than the simple folk around me were letting on. I came back to Hitchhiker's Guide when I was a homesick 20-something in Denmark, acclimating to an entirely new environment, new language, and new life. Most recently, I picked up this copy prior to my 42nd birthday. There are lots of changes happening now and things really seem to be coming together. I can't help but wonder at the timing. You sass? Clever, insightful, and maybe even revelatory in the most absurd way, The Guide is a timeless space adventure that has helped me find my own place in the universe.

If you are going to read the complete “Hitchhiker” series then I recommend buying “The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” as it contains all five of the books in the series. Having them in one volume encourages you to read them soon after each other, and I think that enhances the experience. The collection also contains the horrid story “Young Zaphod Plays It Safe” and it is a waste of space in the text. But, that is a small quibble, and the story is short.I enjoyed the series, mostly, and I would recommend it to certain readers. For more specifics see below where you will find my review for all five of the novels in chronological order.1. “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is short and never gives much development (character or plot) but it seems appropriate for this tale. The novel reminds me a lot of Vonnegut in its style and presentation. Short chapters and biting satire mixed with fantastical plot devices. And it all works! The introduction and first chapter of this novel are funny and pull you into the book. There are moments that are so clever and witty that you will find yourself re-reading certain lines for no reason other than to enjoy them once again. Chapter 23 of the text (perhaps the book’s most famous) is brilliant and to the point. It is very short, funny, and kind of wise. Its opening line, “It is an important and popular fact that things are not often what they seem” could be a thematic statement for the book. One of the novel’s key devices is the idea that Earth is an experiment, and without revealing too much, I will say that it gives the novel its focus. Also enjoyable are the characters of Marvin the paranoid android and Eddie, the shipboard computer on “The Heart of Gold” (a spaceship that serves as the novel’s main setting). Some of the text’s best moments and lines belong to them, and I was more endeared to them than I was to the novel’s two human characters.“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is a delightful and quick read and I will be continuing my trip through the galaxy with its sequel, “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.”2. “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe” reads like a typical adventure tale, and it is more in this genre than its predecessor “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. The restaurant of the title is a place where the characters go and can literally watch the end of the Universe during dinner. Trust me, the way Mr. Adams explains it, it makes sense! The plot of the novel begins right where its predecessor left off, and the set up is that space psychiatrists plot to kill Arthur Dent and Trillian because they are the last survivors from Earth, which we found out in “Hitchhiker” was an experiment designed to answer the purpose of “Life, the universe, and everything.” The psychiatrists do not want that question answered because they would be out of business. And with this clever premise it is off to the races. In this delightful and quick romp of a novel we get to meet space psychiatrists, rock stars, and the ruler of the universe. And it goes without saying that none of it is as expected. The satire of the rock stars and bands is wonderful, as is the clever jab at rock stars that use to flee tax jurisdictions to record albums. In the book one mega space rock star even goes into “suspended death” for two years for the tax deductions. The last 20 pages of the book contain some pretty rough satire of modern professions and social dynamics. And then the text ends abruptly, like Mr. Adams was leading you into the next novel. It worked, because I will be continuing my journey with these hitchhikers. You should too!3. Of the three novels that I have read so far out of the five that compose the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series, “Life, the Universe and Everything” is the weakest, but it is still incredibly good. The whole book feels like a Monty Python sketch, but the first few chapters especially feel that way. It works, but it does get a little tiresome after a while. The humor in this text is mostly through wordplay. It serves the book well and is a strength of this novel because in terms of plot “Life, the Universe and Everything” is all over the place. The unity of the wordplay and humor serves to coalesce (as much as it can) a very scattered text. Especially enjoyable is a clever discourse on swear words, their usage and how they evolve and change. In the world of this novel the word “Belgium” is their equivalent of the F-word. This part of the novel is a witty piece of satirical writing, and is very enjoyable. There are two interesting bits in this novel I would like to share in this review. The first is one of my favorite cameo appearances in this entire series thus far, the character of Wowbagger, the Infinitely Prolonged. He is an alien who through an accident has immortality and is bored to tears. So he makes it a mission to insult everyone in the Universe. His occasional appearances in this story are a joy. Another aspect of the text that I enjoyed is that the ultimate question and answer to everything remains unexplained. There is also a thinly veiled satire aimed at religious symbols where it seems Adams is mocking finding value in such things. It is an engaging section of the text.I will be moving on to the fourth book in this series soon. I have enjoyed this ride so far!4. This fourth novel in the series begins exactly as the first one, word for word, with one small twist. You can decide for yourself what you think of that twist. I did not care for it, as it shifts the focus in this text from the ones that preceded it. “So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish” begins with Arthur Dent back on earth, which is no longer destroyed (it was blown up in the first book of the series) but the explanation for how this is so is best glossed over if one wants to fully enter the world of the text. This novel does not feature the other characters from the previous three, so fans of Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian will be disappointed. Other series staples such as Ford Prefect and Marvin the Android make cameos in the novel’s final pages, but they seemed forced and not all that interesting in the context Mr. Adams uses here. This are some shining moments in this book, among them chapter 25 in which the author’s persona intrudes into the text to answer the question “Does Arthur Dent f-word?” We also get to see “God’s final message to His creation”, and it is actually not a letdown. At one point in the novel Arthur tells someone “See first, think later, then test” as the best way to approach something one does not fully comprehend. If you don’t take the last two parts of his advice while you are reading “So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish” you can enjoy the text.I am anxious to see how the series concludes in installment 5, and I will be traveling that way soon.5. "Mostly Harmless" is a great example of a writer extending a series by one book too many. Of the five books in the "Hitchhiker" series numbers four and five don't add much to it, and take a lot from it. "Mostly Harmless" just feels out of sync with the books that preceded it. Stylistically it is also very different, the chapters are much longer, the humor is much rarer, etc. It is not a good change.A big flaw of the text is that our hero Arthur Dent does not even show up until chapter seven, and even when he does there is no transition from how we left him in book four, "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish." From chapter seven to almost the final 40 pages the chapters alternate point of view between Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect. I found Prefect's story boring until his storyline merges with Dent's about 3/4s of the way through the novel. The book does have some good moments, particularly chapter nine in which it finally feels like the other novels in the series. Arthur Dent goes to the planet Hawalius to seek the advice of the oracles that inhabit it. In this chapter we see sparks of the Douglas Adams from the previous texts and it is a joy to read. There is also a witty cameo appearance by Elvis, which is cleverly woven into the plotline. As has been stated in previous reviews "Mostly Harmless" is a dark text, almost nihilistic in its themes. The series ends in a uncharacteristic manner. Although as a reader I did not like the ending per se, I do feel it was kind of appropriate. It feels jarring and out of place at the same time. I can't say much more without spoiling it. Regardless it does give the series a sense of definite completion, and I think that is a good thing.

This was one of those books that I find a lot of people have heard of but not a lot of people have read - if you're one of those people and you like dry, satire-style humor and imaginative science fiction, certainly give this book a try. This book is super easy to read and is a humorous take on space and time travel. It follows a 'normal' man who unknowingly befriends an alien hitchhiker and is taken along on some entertaining journeys through space. They go to other universes, meet interesting characters, discover futuristic technology (including a melodramatic, depressed robot), and discover the ACTUAL answer to the universe! The only question left now is... what exactly was the question? Sounds ridiculous, I know, but you really get sucked in!

Beautiful book and a great story. I recommend this to anyone. I originally read these books on my Kindle and enjoyed them so much I had to look for something worth displaying on my bookshelf. This is perfect. The design is great, it is sturdy, and the print is a nice size.

My English teacher wasn't amused 35 years ago when I said this was my favorite line in literature. (It wasn't, but I do love it.) Douglas Adams was everything an sf writer should be: witty, humane and imaginative, and this work illustrates it all.A better quote is, “And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything,” but that's too long for a classroom discussion in freshman English

Strangely entertaining throughout, but it does get a bit tedious and "off the wall" at times (typical of Adams style, I suppose). "Marvin" the robot was my favorite character, fondly remembering Alan Rickman as I read the book. Recommended for those who are willing to take a flight of fancy on a cold winter's day----or more. The film of the same name is equally odd and worth watching. Now, I'm reading the Dirk Gently "Holistic Detective Agency" book and find them equally strange and sometimes difficult to follow.
