Very nicely done. I like that much of the book is written about areas of Switzerland that are off the beaten path. It does cover the cities, but it covers the hiking and more remote areas in depth, which is what I am more interested in. I have been to Switzerland 3 times on hiking vacations and I still learned a lot from this book. There are charming inconsistencies in the writing because of the interview format. The information is fairly detailed in all the interviews and there is a general format that is followed. My only criticism is that there are no maps. It would be helpful to have a map at the beginning of each of the general sections. I have the e-book so perhaps there are maps in the conventional book. But it is a very useful book nonetheless.

Full of essays about locals personal experiences. If that is what you are after, perhaps a good read. Otherwise, not a helpful book for planning and forming a decent travel plan to Switzerland.

Purchased as a gift for a family member that was embarking on a 2 year long work assignment that would see them move from the United States to Switzerland.Sometimes it is nice to have a book you can read while drinking coffee, or sitting on a train to look for activities to do rather than use your iPhone or laptop for travel ideas.Family is having a great time checking off things in this book, time will tell if they get a perfect score of 100.

Very good advice. Would have liked to meet some of the authors.

Lots of great advice from locals on whet to see, do, and eat in the different areas in Switzerland.

This is geared toward younger, more outdoorsy people. I'm not one of those.

This book raised my interest to go to some of the places and check out restaurants, hiking trails, etc.It is not easy to find all the hiking trails fit my level, but majority check-outs are satisfactory.Recommend.

Very good book. Great price

Into the Black: The Extraordinary Untold Story of the First Flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the Astronauts Who Flew Her, by Rowland White

Review

“Beautifully researched and written, Into The Black tells the true, complete story of the Space Shuttle better than it’s ever been told before.” (Col. Chris Hadfield, astronaut, author, Space Station commander)"An absolutely terrific look into the birth of the Space Shuttle! Into the Black expertly captures, as never before, a history that spans decades, Cold War tensions, bureaucratic infighting and a multitude of seemingly impossible engineering challenges. But it’s much more than merely the cold facts of how the nuts and bolts all came together. It’s about the people…the men, women, astronauts, engineers, managers, and contractors who had the vision, faith in themselves and sheer guts to believe the impossible could be done; that a reusable, manned, winged craft could be built to routinely fly to and from earth orbit. There are stories of courage and heart-accelerating fear in these pages that even I, as an astronaut, was unaware of." (R. Mike Mullane, NASA Astronaut (Ret.), USAF Col., (Ret.), author of Riding Rockets)"An unforgettable book, one destined to become a classic in the emerging field of space history. Moving effortlessly from planning meetings in obscure offices within NASA, the Pentagon, and industry to the unforgiving environment of high-risk flight test and flight into space, this book traces a remarkable journey and, along the way, introduces his readers to a courageous group of far-seeing engineers and astronauts whose bold vision and tenacious work gave humanity its first reusable space transportation system." (Dr. Richard P. Hallion, Senior Adviser for Air and Space Issues at the Pentagon, author of On the Frontier)“Brilliantly revealed, Into the Black is the finely tuned true story of the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Rowland White has magnificently laid bare the unknown dangers and unseen hazards of that first mission. He has also given us an amazing insight into a world of science and engineering, the victories and defeats, for the first time. It’s the perfect tale that educates as it entertains. Once read, not forgotten.” (Clive Cussler)“Into the Black isn’t just spectacularly researched, it’s told like a thriller, unfolding the edge-of-death tale of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s maiden voyage in riveting fashion. Rowland White performs a rare feat here, stitching together comprehensive research—countless interviews, declassified files, flight documents—into a tale of courage and daring as streamlined and elegant as the aircraft herself. Buckle in and hold on tight—this thing's got jet propulsion.” (Gregg Hurwitz, author of Orphan X)“Rowland White’s account of Columbia’s inaugural flight in 1981,and all the preparations that led up to it, could not be a more timely reminder of what it takes to design, launch and fly a complex manned space vehicle. White’s research is thorough, his writing style is superb, and he has a gripping and fresh story to tell. This is a genuine ‘must-have’ book for anyone fascinated by the sharp end of space flight.”' (Piers Bizony, author of Starman, The Space Shuttle, and The Making of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’)"This remarkable book describes the final (and unpublished) chapter in the 'Race to the Moon'! Between 1961 and 1963, four groups of astronauts were selected by the USA -- three groups were comprised of those pilots who were assigned to NASA and were highly publicized as men who explored the Moon. The fourth group disappeared into the “black” world of the CIA, the NRO, and the Top Secret Air Force“Manned Orbiting Laboratory.” This is the exciting first-told story of these exceptional pilots who only became known publicly during the development and first flights of the Space Shuttle – flights into the real Black of Space." (Dave Scott, Commander, Apollo 15) “Centuries from now the space shuttle program will be regarded as mankind's first mighty leap into space, not in a rowboat, but in a truly useful spaceship. White tells it as the great, magnificent adventure it was. A superb book.” (Stephen Coonts)“An extraordinary, carefully researched, tale of the evolution of America’s space program. White has unearthed a treasure trove of formerly highly classified facts and combined them with an insightful look at the people who developed and flew America’s early human spacecraft and the first Space Shuttle flight.” (Hugh Harris, former Director of Public Affairs for NASA's Kennedy Space Center and Voice of Space Shuttle Launch Control for STS-1)“Into the Black told me stuff I never knew before – and I worked at NASA for 30 years." (Michael Foale, former Astronaut and International Space Station Commander)

Excellent history about how the Space Transportation System (Shuttle) was created as a follow-up to the Apollo Program. This isn't a technical history but White provides plenty of pertinent details on the challenges faced in building a reusable shuttle under tight budget constraints. White also digs deeper into the connection between the Air Force and the Shuttle Program in the area of design and with the astronauts who migrated from the canceled Manned Orbiting Laboratory over to NASA. These men helped design, test and fly the shuttle through its early years. White also provides some insight on the political side detailing the thought process and support from the Nixon and Carter Administrations. White writes this fascinating history in such a manner that makes it feel more like a Cold War novel than a dry technical story about machines. I started reading it and was so caught up in White's engaging narrative that I stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish it. This is the way history should be written for the general audience. White nailed the facts while making this a story about the amazingly talented and driven people who made the Shuttle a reality.

Excellent. If you love flying, or space subjects, or the Shuttle, or the last quarter of the 20th century, you'll enjoy Into The Black. Written with authority by a man who love flying, the book details (and it is detailed) the intricacies of building Earth's first reusable spacecraft system, a historical journey off planet which heralded the arrival of the Space Age as a viable, doable concept. Even if you followed the newspapers and TV coverage of the entire Shuttle era, you never knew much of what really went on behind the scenes of one of civilization's crowning achievements. This book is a wonderful read and an exciting reveal of the Shuttle and it's political backdrop, much of which remained under wraps until now.

We aerospace enthusiasts have all read most of the details of the Space Shuttle. This book goes beyond. The author has used a number of recently declassified documents to portray the true story of how the Shuttle program actually went from idealistic dreaming, to reality, to production, and then to actual flight.I enjoyed the whole thing. The authors portrayal of the astronauts involved is fascinating.

If you want a look at the black world and connection to the shuttle program, then you need to read into the black. Lots of wonderful information here. Will make you proud of NASA, air force and the not. Real good look at what it took to make projects work. Lot of great people in the service of the it country. Once you start book, you have to finish it before putting it down. Mr white did a great job on this book. Thanks!!!!

This is really the first book that I have read about the begining and development of the STS, culminating with the launch of STS-1. It was well written and engaged you with its various people that were involved. Only dipped a little with some of the political battles in its creation. Stayed mostly on the engineering and operational side. The only other books that I have seen on this topic is the NASA Mission Reports.

Excellent book about the development of the Space Shuttle and the first flight of the Columbia.I thought that I knew everything about the Shuttle program. This book has information which I didn't know.Just get it.In closing, though, it is sad that the loss of the Columbia in 2003 led to the end of the Shuttle program and left us dependent upon the Russians for manned access to space. The Shuttle fleet was retired too early, as the Orbiters each had about two thirds of their designed life left (the STS was designed to be reusable for at least 100 flight's per Orbiter. Each Orbiter averaged only 30-odd missions. There was no reason to end the program early!)

This is one great book. It's a history book with tons of adventure woven in. You get a real sense for the test pilots turned astronauts and the colossal achievement building and flying the space shuttle was. From her bleeding edge main engines to airplane spaceships for the 1930s, this is a marvelous piece of romanticism with something for all dreamers.

This book was a joy to read. I have an interest in flight as a pilot and space flight is an easy place to find amazement and excitement. Mr. White made this historical review into a riveting story that was stranger than fiction. While not as "glamorous" as Apollo 13, this was no less exciting and filled with a willingness to overcome obstacles well before the first flight even occurred. If you're interested in the Space Shuttle program, this is THE book to start with.If only all books written on history could be done as deftly, we'd all be historians!
