I was hoping this could perhaps inspire me as I begin my career and to see how the world could use more "design" oriented thinking. While there are certainly many interesting examples and ideas in the book I think this may be more geared towards people in management or in business for themselves. To be sure, the ideas seem rock solid, the kind of holistic thinking that is advocated in the book IS what makes many of the most successful companies in the world. But, again, i feel like "little old me" can't really make the kind of changes in a corporate environment that would be necessary. But I guess if part of the point is simply to put the idea of "Design thinking" out there, then this book deserves to be read by those who are in positions to make those changes. I know I will appreciate the concepts taught in this book if/when I reach that point in my career.

“...predictability leads to boredom and boredom leads to the loss of talented people.”Unfortunately, this statement on page 17 mirrored my experience with the book: predictable writing leads to boredom and boredom leads to a loss of attention. There’s no compelling story or message. The writing lacks fire. Stories of IDEO’s successes are unconvincing and uninteresting for lack of detail. The cover design, the hand-drawn “mind map” on the inside front cover, and the slightly unusual pagination all suggest a forced quirkiness without purpose. If the book were bold in its design or in its writing that might cover for the thin material inside, but the presentation is so mild and hesitant it’s hard to share the author’s enthusiasm. If you’ve attended a design or engineering meeting in which an earnest colleague explains the obvious at length, and with relish, then you’ve already read this book.I’d like to say that there is a better book buried inside this one, and that “design thinking” could prove a useful methodology if delivered by a more skilled writer, but whatever useful nuggets might be found here are expressed more coherently, and more usefully, in other books about design. If you haven’t yet read Donald Norman’s book The Design of Everday Things, read that. Cherish it. Use it to swat away people who invite you to watch inspirational videos. Read it again rather than read a lesser book. Then try The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte.Norman’s and Tufte’s books are well written. They should piss you off a little bit because they open your eyes to how terribly designed many products are. You’ll be different after reading those books. You won’t want to change the world after reading those books; you’ll want to fix it. You won’t find many more books like them.Although I have respect for IDEO, and nothing against the author of this book, I can’t recommend buying it. If you find my copy in a Little Free Library, then it could be worth some time flipping through. But in general your time would be better spent reading books about design that appear on numerous “best of” lists.

The book is great for exploring the discipline of design thinking and even greater when it has applied it to so many cases of innovation in the context of "change". Tim has expansive experience in the field, no doubt about it.But, in many places in the book I found Tim wondering around aimlessly and that sometimes confused me, and many times made my journey of this read difficult. Maybe because he has the mind of a designer and design thinking could easily look like an aimless journey.. and coping with a mind of designer along a creative path is by nature an unpredictable experience. Besides, I wish Tim goes for a refresh on the book as 2008 is too old for an era of digital transformation and disruption. In my opinion, "design thinking" is a bad name for a way of work that has evolved over time and in many areas that hardly can be claimed as belonging to it. Empathy and human-centered approaches, observation, brainstorming, experimentation, and prototyping are all ways of work and development that you can find in many disciplines such as design, strategy, software, training, problem-solving, and many more. Being a bad name is because of two reasons: it emphasizes "thinking" and ignores "doing", and it mentally (not actually) attaches it to design while it applies to many other areas. But I guess "design thinking" is made to stick, and I have no real issue with that.I would recommend this book for those who would like to explore the topic and at the same be cautious of its fuzzy nature.

If you are looking for a book that describes Tim's view of what IDEO does, then this is a good book and probably deserves a higher rating than I am giving it. But, I doubt that is what most people who do buy the book are hoping to find. I think that most people will be looking for a guide to the application of design thinking in their own business environments. This book is not that. In fact, it is so far from it that I was sorely tempted to give it a one star rating. As a how to book, it is about as big a turn-off as one could imagine. In the early pages he describes what appears to be the hiring process at IDEO, but he makes it sound like this super selectivity is required to identify anyone who will be participating in your own design thinking efforts. Of course, that tone is not helpful at all. What we need is a guide to help the teams we have apply they disciplined tools of design thinking that are oh so tersely described in the IDEO "method card" deck. So, if you want a book that describes what to expect from IDEO should you happen to hire them to help you with a particular customer enablement challenge, this book is for you and you should think of it as a five star book. It would also rate it highly as a book to give to a superstar employee in whom you are going to invest the bucks to send them to the Stanford d School's "Bootcamp" program. But if you want a guide to the application of design thinking to give to your troops, avoid this book like the plague. I would rate it as something lower than one star for that purpose.

Review

Sharp, Laurie. Wool Pets. Creative Pub.: Quayside. 2008. c.128p. ISBN 978-1-58923-385-0. pap. $19.95. FIBER CRAFTS   Expert needle felter Sharp presents a collection of 20 wool figures, mainly animals, plus a couple of mythical creatures for good measure. Beginning with basic techniques for needle felting, Sharp quickly moves on to simple projects intended to get newbie felters comfortable with the tools and techniques. Unlike other needle-felting books, this one describes and illustrates each step of the process, which makes it easy for felters of all skill levels to replicate any of the creations in the book. With minor changes in color or shape, many of the basic patterns could be used to create different creatures (the goldfinch, for example, could become a cardinal). Highly recommended. - Library Journal, August 2008

I was very disappointed by this book. If you are an experienced felter this may be a great book but for someone who has only felted a dozen or so animals it leaves a lot to be desired. The instructions are incomplete, the measurements are off and it needs more photos to show what you are supposed to do. For example, the first project is a bumble bee. The first step is to roll the wool into a ball, but the photo shows a tube shape. If you look at the photo of the completed bee, it has antenae. There are no instructions on what to use for these. The ladybug is simialr. What was used for the ladybug's antennae? Wire? It says to sew the eys, but again, there are no instructions on how to do this. I felted the rabbit to the dimensions given and the head was way too small. And again with the eyes...no instructions. So, I tried making the owl. Again, the size given for the head was not proportional to the body and the finished owl did not resemble the photo of her finished owl.To make the frog's foot you are to define the toes by needdling an indentaion between towes. Pull the towes out and twist the wool between your fingertips. How do you do that? So, unless you know a lot about felting before you buy this book you would do better to find one that gives a LOT more guidance.

I had just started my first small needle-felting project, a chick, and needed help figuring out how to make the eyes, and how to add legs. I thought this book would help walk me through the finished project. It helped, but skimmed over the details I was searching for. This book has a good basic primer on materials: needles, foam, types of wool fibers that work best for needle felting. And a primer on basic techniques like rolling, flat shapes, cones, tubes. etc. There are 20 projects with detailed instructions. In those instructions you can find greater details on some techniques, like making the beak of a hummingbird, which is pretty clever.I was trying to find out how to make eyes. The book came up frustratingly short on that detail. "sew a black bead on each side of the head for eyes." I can sew a button on a shirt and tie it off in back. There is no "back" to a needle felted animal. So I was lost - until I got to the sheep, the 16th project on page 93. That gave the details of how you tie off the sewing of the eyes.As for the animal projects, most of them are pretty cute and serve as a primer. The reader can craft their own version of that animal. Most of the examples were pretty cute. Some were outstandingly cute - the rabbit, sheep, giraffe, some were not so cute in my opinion, like the frog and mermaid. But the reader gets a good, basic idea of how to put together an animal. The gallery at the end has a goose and an elephant that I would like to attempt, and probably can do it after learning the techniques in this book.

The designs in this book are super cute just like those on the cover! This was purchased as a gift for my sister who loves it. I marked the pages of things I want her to make for me before giving it to her :-) She's new to this craft, and after trying a ladybug, she feels confident she'll be able to learn to do this without a beginner's guide.Note that there is a fairly significant tool and supply list for creating these.

Wool Pets is a great introduction for anyone interested in creating wool creatures. It provides instruction in the basics and allows you to approach projects with materials lists and also with complete pictorial instruction of each step. Sure, your first projects may not be exact replicas, and yet the instructions are detailed enough that you should be able to quickly master techniques. You are encouraged to take the instructions also as "basics" and to explore further and use the basic construction to create whatever animals you wish, including imaginary ones!

Beautiful, hardcover book. Excellent for beginners, especially (which I am!) Explains different types of needle felting tools and wools/fibers. This book covers just what it says - pets and small critters with a mermaid or two thrown in for good measure. No purse patterns, here :)! Many projects with very detailed color pictures for each step of each project. Starts with easier projects and builds up to small dolls at the end of the book. This book was an excellent confidence builder for a new needle felter, like me - it's given me confidence and skills to branch out and try my own designs.

I checked this out of library first, and then decided to purchase it. Good basic overview please, lots of clever projects, each one builds on the prior one.I have felted before, this is a good review and intro book.

I went to a quick class and made a sheep with the wool roving. Came home and ordered this book. It is great. Wonderful pictures and instructions. And I love every animal is this book. So important that I was able to "Look Inside" because now if I can't see what I am buying I just move on. Thanks for the great book!!

I received this book for Christmas and have made 6 projects all ready. I wish the wool that was used in the book came with the book but I am trying to find more coarse wool like the the photo of the penguins so that I can begin making them. The book is great for beginners and most of the photos match the photos in the instructions. I would use the wool by Wool Dimensions to do these projects. The super soft merino wool is a bit too delicate.
