Tyler Smith was a three-year starter on the men's basketball team at Penn State and was an Academic All-American. He played a key role during Penn State's run to the 2001 NCAA Sweet 16 when they knocked off North Carolina en route to PSU's best season in almost fifty years. Following his graduation from Penn State, Smith played professional basketball for eleven years in the US and overseas. He lives in State College, Pennsylvania with his wife Cara and daughters Hannah, Lexi, and Tori.

I am not much of a sports fan, yet the author's descriptions of both basketball game highlights and the challenges of being a professional athlete living abroad are engaging and entertaining. Rather than a celebration of self, Tyler shows a sincere appreciation for teammates, coaches, and others in his life. Yes, considerable talent and dogged persistence contributed to his success, yet family and faith were also of key significance. What a role model he is for others hoping for a professional career abroad!

Tyler Smith writes a realistic and humorous account of his career in basketball overseas and here in the United States. The book will you have you laughing from his time to transitioning to vastly different cultures and languages to cringing from various injuries he suffered in a land with limited medical resources. The glamour of professional basketball most fans think of is put to rest by reading this book. Well worth the time and it is a smooth read from start to finish.

One of the best books I've ever read. With a son playing his 2nd year overseas - Tyler does a tremendous job sharing his basketball journey. Everyone thinks that playing basketball overseas must be a blast - there definitely are many high points but there are many challenges as well. If you have the opportunity to play at the next level somewhere, whether in the states or in another country - definitely a must read. This will be a great holiday gift for my son and his fiancé.

I'm not a reader of sports nonfiction, but since I watched Tyler play while he was at PSU and was a fan, I was motivated to read. And I wasn't disappointed! Tyler's wit and descriptions of playing time were fun to read. Reading about his "can-do" attitude and perspective on life was key to moving me forward in the book.

This book is fun, hilarious and insightful into the trials and tribulations of playing basketball overseas. I promise that you will laugh out loud at the author's wit. I didn't want it to end.

I was a bit hesitant to get the book because folks panned it for being terribly out of date. Thing is it's not that bad even though it does address networks that are obsolete. History is good and what the book omits can be gathered through basic research. About the only gripe I have is it's a bit light on some aspects of communications but then again this book is an introduction to communication systems. I have only read through chapter 8. But as a "comm guy" I would say it covers the material fairly well.

Although this textbook is required for the course I am taking, the reading is much easier than any other text I have read. A layman can read and understand this text. I would certainly recommend it!

It still talks about hubs in this book, which seems crazy to me. I haven't seen hubs in action in over 5 years. But then it somehow mentions brand-new technologies like Zigbee and 10G. It's all over the map and the editing is probably where it needs to be improved. Perhaps they just add material and never take any out.

Well it was a retired text book, it's nice to have in hardback. Probably the most boring text book ever but I learned a lot about servers, networks, wire types and all kinds of electrical and data components.

The author basically examines the belief in positive thinking and the mental denial of failure, and points out the extent to which such beliefs frequently lead do NOT lead to happiness, but to feelings of disappointment and self-blame. He then embarks on an easily read examination of a series of philosophies, philosophers, and research sources to discover how one can more effectively find tranquility by embracing uncertainty and acceptance of what may be - whatever it may be.The extraordinarily well-read author's path leads us from Seneca and the Stoics, past some disadvantages of goal-setting to Ulrich Tolle and the benefits of insecurity. He pays a rather entertaining visit to a museum dedicated to products that failed in the marketplace, the "survivor bias," and a discussion about the widespread avoidance of thoughts about death. Each of these is a starting point for his very cogent thoughts and research about a specific aspect of the journey on which he is taking the reader.I must admit to having been somewhat of a convert to the author's philosophy before picking up the book, so that there is some bias here, but I truly believe that most Westerners would benefit greatly from reading this book slowly and thoughtfully. True, there was a point in mid-read when either my mind wandered, or the author did not clearly explain the connection between the current topic and his main line of thought. However, he (or I) returned well before the end and left me extremely glad to have read it.In his Epilogue, Burkeman uses two expressions with which I was not familiar but which were particularly interesting to me: First, "negative capability," reportedly coined by the poet John Keats who explained it as "when [one] is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason..." Second is a word that may have the same meaning, acceptance of "opensure," which is the opposite of closure. As a counselor and coach I have often thought that if people could end their search for certainty and/or closure they would be much happier, and I am pleased to find a word that describes that state.The very thoroughly researched text ends with an extensive bibliography, so that the curious can go to sources quite easily.I recommend Oliver Burkeman's "The Antidote" to just about anyone whose search for certainty, or belief in positive thinking as the path to happiness, have not actually led them to the tranquility that they seek. That would probably be most people.

In The Antidote, Burkeman attempts to provide a counterpoint to the ubiquitous positive-thinking messages we hear, from The Secret to corporate goal setting. He argues that our attempts to find happiness by thinking positively, concentrating on success, eliminating doubt, and setting specific goals actually make us more unhappy. As some one whose response to "positive thinking" is typically eye-rolling, I was excited to read the book, hoping to find useful tidbits that would help me utilize my more cynical view of life to my advantage. And while there are a few points in the book I found interesting, I was also disappointed by the vague and philosophy-heavy descriptions of alternatives to positive thinking Burkeman presents, from Buddhist meditation to Stoicism.The book isn't intended as a step-by-step "improve your life" guide like many of the positive-thinking tomes, which I appreciated. But I suppose the downside is that the book also doesn't provide much for people who want to use a more negative approach to grab a hold of. Some of its generalities, though, were interesting. For example, Burkeman argues that rather than set goals, people should take stock of what they have, and begin working from there. Or, the best way to avoid procrastination is not to try to "feel like" doing something--just do it regardless. And for all those irritations in life, Burkeman suggests that we view it not in terms of something being done to us (that kid over there is annoying me) but in terms of how we respond (I'm annoyed because I believe he is annoying). Some of the other ideas I was more familiar with from my psychologist husband, such as imagining worst-case scenarios or separating your sense of self from your feelings, and others from my work as an educator (e.g., the importance of having an incremental mindset about intelligence and ability rather than an innate).There are certainly things that will stay with me: when I next hear about how Bob Smith became a millionaire because he was perseverant, I'll remember survivor bias--and note that we've ignored all those people who were perseverant and failed. But, as a whole, the book was too focused on philosophy and on quoting various philosophers and not focused enough on practical matters for it to be much use to me.

The problem, from this perspective, isn’t that you don’t feel motivated; it’s that you imagine you need to feel motivated. … If you can regard your thoughts and emotions about whatever you’re procrastinating on as passing weather, you’ll realize that your reluctance about working isn’t something that needs to be eradicated or transformed into positivity. You can coexist with it. You can note the procrastinatory feelings and work anyway."He bases his advice on a thought of Shoma Morita, a Japanese psychiatrist: "Is it accurate to assume that we must ‘overcome’ fear to jump off the high dive at the pool, or increase our confidence before we ask someone out for a date? If it was, most of us would still be waiting to do these things.”Simple, to the point. So far, it has been effective for me in getting me off the dime and acting several times -- even though I didn't feel like it.Once you figure out what you should do, just do it. After my husband purchased the book and suggested we do it together, I decided why not. He was offering to do the cooking, so I sat back and did what he told me to. So glad that I did! We have 9 days left of the 21 days and I feelamazing!!!! At first the broth was a little nasty to me, but now I love it. (A little bit of Crystal hot sauce helps me a ton!) The other day I had so much energy that I cleaned my house from top to bottom from the second I woke up to the moment I went to bed! It was crazy!!My kids told me yesterday when I walked through the door, "Whoa, Mom!! You've lost weight!" I was beaming!! My skin also looks great! (I had a brown sun spot downright disappear from my forehead! No joke!) The craziest thing is that I don't have sweet cravings anymore. I know I will be able to do the maintenance program, no problem. But I do miss my red wine! That's the hardest part. But my body needed the break from alcohol and sleep has never been better.Oh yeah!!! Get this! This diet has cured my husband's insomnia. I'm. Dead. Serious. He is hypoglycemic and would wake him up in the middle to eat and this diet has stabilized his blood sugars so he sleeps like a log. It's crazy to him! (His skin looks amazing too, by the way. He actually looks like he has a slight tan!I wish I would've taken before pictures. But honestly I didn't think I'd have these kind of results and I also didn't think I would able to stick to the diet 100%. But I have and I will for the next 9 days.So glad my husband bought this and "made" me do this diet!****Update. I have lost a total of 12 pounds!!!!! AND I have a week left!! I'm in shock!!! I can't begin to describe how great this diet is. I lost 15 lbs. On top of that this diet has cured my depression and anxiety, it's lowered my resting heart rate from 140 to 75, it's given me more energy than I can spend, and it's made me sleep more soundly than I've ever slept. I used to have no energy for working out but now I have so much energy that I WANT to exercise to burn it off! Unlike other diets I've tried, this one makes me want to stay on it forever. I just feel so GOOD. It's incredible how much your diet impacts so many aspects of your health.

Without any exercise at all, I've lost 35# in 8 consecutive weeks of dieting, plus I feel much healthier, more energetic and my facial skin looks a little younger., Specifically, I lost 14# in the first 2 weeks, then 9# more in the next 2 weeks, then 7# more in the next 2 weeks and then 5# more in the past 2 weeks. During those 8 weeks, I over-indulged in unhealthy food and drinks on about 7 different days when attending social events. I've tried all the popular diet plans before with limited results. The Bone Broth Diet is by far the easiest and most effective diet I've ever tried. The key to this diet is the bone broth itself. I'm consuming nothing but 6 cups of beef bone broth on two, non-consecutive mini-fast days per week as the book advises. Tip - I bought my first beef broth from local health store and it was weak, expensive at $2.00 per cup, and not very satisfying. As a result, those mini-fasting days were tough to tolerate. So, I started making my own beef broth in my crock pot for 24 hours with tap water, onions, celery, carrots, pepper, Himalayan salt, garlic, and grass fed beef bones from a local farm - total cost $.50 per cup. It is delicious and very satisfying, so now the mini-fasting days are a breeze. This is such an easy diet that I'm going to continue dieting a few more weeks to see how much more weight I can lose.

This is a clean paleo diet (no dairy, grains, sugar etc) plus two days a week that you fast and only drink bone broth. Bone broth is super good for you.There.I just saved you the money.Edit: it has some decent recipes. Also bone broth *is* really excellent for you.

I wish there was a section on unintentional weight loss assessment / evaluation as well and chronic abdominal pain. otherwise, suits my needs in a busy gastroenterology practice. The sections are short and informative

In general this is an excellent book. Compared to the previous edition it has more charts and graphs and visuals BUT the print is too small and even worse, the print is gray not black- very difficult to read. What were you thinking?
