This book made me fall in love with Jesus. In the contemporary narrative of Christianity, I was losing faith, this book made me long for more and gave me renewed strength. Somebody needs to make this an audiobook.
Amazing and utterly fascinating , I have read this several times .The closer you draw to Jesus the more He reveals himself to you which is stunning terrifying and altogether incredible , Praise God he lifts us up and His name we proclaim !
This book reveals that the Christian church was not an all-agreeing, lock-step entity at its inception. This book contributes to the reader's understanding of the socio-political and the religious environment that produced a variety of beginnings of Christianity. Also, the book functions as a catalyst for change in the way the reader perceives the canonized, Holy Bible. This book answers the why and the how the Bible includes what it includes. The why and the how as to the rejection, suppression, and the attempts at the destruction of the gnostic books are also given.
Very interesting. Its more in line with what I believe about Jesus. Of course who says what I belirve is who Jesus was. Has a metaphysical bend that can't be denied. The New Age Jesus. A more adult and human Jesus that I can believe in. The son of God who allowes we are all sons of God.
I'd always been curious about the Gnostic Gospels and wanted to read it for myself. Meyer's gives a good, brief introduction before each book. I am glad that I purchased it!
the topic of the gnostic gospels is vast, and any one resource less than 10,000 pages isn't likely to cover much. that's a limitation that any reader must acknowledge before hand. the selection of readings is very good, quite stimulating (at least for this reader). the was very layman-friendly. as a layman, i appreciated the ease of reading it. i wish it had adopted a more scholarly approach, but, that's more a personal preference. if you want a highly scholarly book, this probably isn't it. it's terrific for the rest of us. i can not comment on the accuracy of translation. overall, i give this a "B++" and i highly recommend your reading it, for laymen and busy in-the-field professionals. very nicely done!!! finally, for every book on kindle for which i must pay over $10, i must comment that, in my opinion, since amazon has already charged us for our kindles, the prices of books on kindle ought to be reduced. it doesn't cost amazon $7 to market this book!
This book is a great introduction to the gnostic gospels, especially if followed up by "The Nag Hammadi Scriptures: The International Edition" also by Marvin Meyer. Anyone who is reading these books in search of truth is on the path of true discovery. There are many translations of the Nag Hammadi Scriptures and the gnostic gospels readily available, and while some may be good, others are not. That being said, you won't go wrong here. This book, which is easy and accessible, is a good place to start for anyone who is just becoming familiar with these gospels and texts. For those who are already familiar with these texts, I highly recommend Meyer's other book: "The Nag Hammadi Scriptures."
Great read, nice to hear more about Jesus and I feel my knowledge of his life and wisdom has greatly increased. If you want to know Jesus for who he is you must read every writing that mentions him not just the ones in the Christian Bible.
