These books are okay. They are easy for my first and second graders to read, who are just transitioning into chapter books. The characters are easy to keep track of, and there are both a boy and a girl, so it is gender neutral. I also like that the stories teach us something, and can be used with the corresponding nonfiction "fact tracker" series to learn about all sorts of interesting creatures and/or historical events. That being said, I do have a few qualms. First of all, I strongly agree with the reviewers that criticized the author/editor for letting these books be published with so many grammatical errors! Children learn by example, and reading incomplete sentences, misspelled words, proper nouns that are not capitalized, and loosely structured paragraphs makes it hard to teach proper mechanics. These books could have been phenomenal if not for the poor grammar!.....I myself debated on whether or not to use these for a while, and then decided that that I could use the errors as a jumping off point to teach some basic rules of grammar. Each day I put a couple of selections out of the book on the board, and asked the kids to fix it. We worked on ways to improve the writing, but honestly, it was a lot of extra work! I would have rather had the grammar be correct in the beginning, and then I would have been able to use the book as an example of good sentence structure. Also, I may be old fashioned (even though I'm young), but I do not like some of the ways that the characters respond to each other, such as by saying, "Oh, don't be stupid" and things like that. I know kids talk to each other this way, but I want to build an atmosphere of mutual respect, and some things just kind of hit me as bad examples, even if I am being a bit too picky.Honestly, I would say that I my kiddos and I enjoyed the companion Fact Tracker books a lot more than the actual Magic Tree House ones. The grammar isn't perfect, but it is a lot better, and the paragraphs are more clearly defined, so I didn't feel the need to 'correct' it for them. Since the books are nonfiction, they also fit nicely into science and history lessons, and you don't need to read the Magic Tree House books first! In addition, I would recommend the Boxcar Children series--although these may seem a little daunting for some beginning readers to read all on their own. The chapters are a little longer and there are more words on a page, but the adventures are just an interesting, the grammar is correct, and the characters are good role models. I only wish that there were 'fact tracker' books to go along with THAT set!In conclusion, like many other reviewers have said, these are "great books, but poorly written." I have heard that the books farther on in the series are better, and I hope that this is true...but I don't know if we will continue on to find out.

I really can't recommend this series enough. Buy this book for child. Now. Click the button. We recently started reading chapter books for our nearly 5 year old son. We bought a few different ones to see what he'd like. We bought and read the first of My Father's Dragon and The Littles. He liked them OK. My wife and I didn't like My Father's Dragon so much because it seems quite dated. The Littles was OK but was rather violent for a kid his age. But the Magic Tree house series is in a word ... magical. My son can't wait for us to read several chapters at bed time and always asks for one more no matter how many we read. I think we are already on book 10 now. It will be sad when we finally finish the last one. What's so great about these books is that they combine adventure with learning about so many different things ... history, other cultures, geography, animals, and so on. My wife and I also appreciate that the books are about a boy and a girl, not just a boy going on the adventures. The girl is brave and somewhat impulsive, and the boy is more hesitant and cerebral. Together, they make a great team. They also aren't simply exploring. For each book, they have some sort of mission, such as figuring out a riddle or finding a certain object, so there's some sort of puzzle element to the books that spurs thinking. Generally, the missions are part of a larger mission that spans several books as well. What more can you ask for as a parent? These books are fun and engaging for our son, teach him about lots of different things, and encourage him to think abstractly about what's happening in the story. Thank you Mary Pope Osborne!

My son is in love with this book and is asking for more! I'm so excited to get him interested in his first chapter books and enjoy the quality time we spend together while reading. This is a great book for early readers and I find it useful in honing listening skills. My son just turned 5 and the writing and short chapters hold his attention. We could read the book in a sitting and he doesn't lose interest. Very excited to check out the others in the series.

My four-year-old was a very early reader, and this was the first set of "big girl books" that actually interested her. While she is a wonderful reader, she is still young, and many chapter books are conceptually too advanced to be of interest to younger children. She is completely engrossed by the Magic Treehouse series and squealed "More Mary Pope Osborne books!" when I gave her her last set. Every once in a while there is a "scary bit" that we need to discuss briefly, but on the whole, it's a safe choice for the youngest of independent readers. Be careful, though - once they're hooked on the first set, they want ALL the books!

Our five-year old loves listening to these stories. We read them over the course of a couple of days (although he does not want to stop reading). Some parts are a little scary for our five-year old (the ninja book), but he is grasping many of the concepts and plots. I find the books a bit repetitive and hackneyed, but they are not for me. The series is about a brother and sister who live in Frog Creek, PA. They discover a treehouse in the woods near their house. The treehouse is filled with books. The treehouse takes them to the places in the books. Jack is older and more cautious. He likes to read the books. Annie is impetuous and always running ahead. Jack and Annie get to learn a little bit (and so do we) about the times and places they visit.

Amazon.com Review

Brenna Yovanoff and Maggie Stiefvater: Author One-on-One Brenna Yovanoff is is the author of The Replacement and has published in various journals. She lives in Denver, Colorado. Recently she sat down with Maggie Stiefvater to discuss Stiefvater's Ballad and The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. Read the resulting interview below, or turn the tables to see what happened when Maggie interviewed Brenna. Brenna: Even though we all know that characters are not authors, we also know that characters sort of are their authors (at least a little bit). Which of your characters would you say is most like you as a person? Maggie: Well, most of my characters are delightfully single-minded, because that is what characters do. So if I were arguing a high-level thesis paper, I’d probably declare that, in fact, all of my characters are really me, just exaggerated, stripped of gray areas and less than crystal clear motivations. Even the evil ones. Maybe especially the evil ones. >br/> That said, I’ve been told I’m quite like Isabel from the Shiver [Wolves of Mercy Falls] series and James from Ballad. Brenna: If Cole from the Shiver trilogy and James from Ballad had to fight each other in a snark-off, who would win? Maggie: James, I’m afraid. Cole has learned to rely far too much on his appearance to win these things and sometimes, my friends, a finely crafted chin will just not get you ahead in life. Brenna: When your characters are romantically involved, they’re willing to fight desperately to be together, often against seemingly insurmountable odds. Like when their significant others turn into wolves and run away into the forest. Where do you stand on the topic of true love? Maggie: I’m a fan/ believer/ proponent of true love. I think it’s worth waiting for, and I also think it’s worth fighting for once you’ve found it. I’m one of those madly in love people who just doesn’t understand why anyone would stand for anything less. I also find long-term dating confusing. I was engaged after a month and a half because, like Grace in Shiver, I am bad at shopping. I just see what I want, and then I go and get it. Brenna: Cole St. Clair’s band Narkotika is, understandably, not a real band. However, if it were a real band, what would it sound like? Maggie: Well, I think that Narkotika, like love, is in the eye of the beholder. It’s supposed to be an edgy, hard, slightly unsettling band, and that varies depending on what you listen to. Also, it was originally an electronica band (think Blaqk Audio). These days I go through life thinking that possibly they would sound like Ringside. Or Korn. Or Carolina Liar. Or Three Days Grace. I realize that these bands sound nothing like each other. I have no good explanation for that. Brenna: What would you say to all the woefully optimistic girls out there (i.e., me) who want to know if Cole would date them? What if they said please? Maggie: Oh, Cole would date you. I guarantee you he would date you. If by “date,” you mean “make out with you in a dark hallway, remove some of your clothing, completely avoid giving you his contact information, disappear, and make you have a resulting existential crisis about why you date boys who treat you badly.” The please wouldn’t be necessary.

#242,245 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Prologue: I’ve read, I believe, all of Stiefvater’s novels, and I think that she an amazing writer. I am also not writing this as a teaser, so there will be reveals that you shouldn’t read before you read the first book. That said I had a hard time getting into this book—not sure why, but perhaps because the major character from the first novel steps back and (semi-central) James becomes the pivotal character. They have moved on from their prior school to a famous high school for musicians. And they have also moved on, to some extent, from each other. Dee’s communication to James consists primarily of unsent text messages. While James is working hard to understand this new, odd school, he starts hearing music coming from the hills, and seeing and hearing one of Them who wants to become his mentor in exchange for . . . . Where is the music coming from? What does she want from James?Read on to find (some of) the answers. Oh, and as was mentioned above, this tale has a walloping finish—two late, late nights for me.

I can't believe it took me this long to finish this particular book of Stiefvater's. This now leaves me with only one book of hers that I have yet to read. Ballad was exactly as the name indicates. The story seemed to form it's own music in reading. What Stiefvater can do with words mesmerizes me. I am a true fan for life. I loved loved loved Nuala and James. Their characters are two of my favorite characters out of all the characters I've ever read from Stiefvater. Their story is beautiful and yet tragic at the same time. You can't help but feel their every emotion and be drawn into this wicked web that is weaved through out each chapter. Trust me when I tell you that this is a book you won't be disappointed with.

I know a lot of the reviewers comment that this didn't live up to the first book. That Dee was a shadow of herself or the writing or story didn't flow in quite the same way... I get where they're coming from, but I don't entirely agree. This book has its own kind of beauty in it. It's different from Lament. It's a different storyline, different POV and, most significantly, the characters are different because they've been shaped by what happened in Lament. James nearly died and he declared his love to Dee without any response from her, then watched as she fell in love with another man. Dee chose her best friend's life over giving her true love life to be with her, thus losing him to the fairy realm. In one fell swoop she lost her best friend (because the "L" word was tossed out there and can never be taken back) and her soul mate (because to not die forever he's now stuck in fairydum somewhere). So when we start this book, they are changed. Dee may be shell of herself, but it didn't feel like a plot device as much as a real continuation of her story, only Ballad wasn't her story, it was James's story, so that shadow was cast against the light of his tale. Yes, it was sad that Dee lost so much of herself, but I think it made sense that after being so brutally used up by the fairies and then losing so much, she had lost so much of herself. So it was probably a good thing this wasn't her POV story, because she'd lost her fight.James is a brilliant character and I loved being in his head for this book. The first person POV shifts between him and Nuala were distinct and engaging and the storyline kept me turning the pages. In addition to the beauty of this author's prose, I love the depth of emotion, the raw humanity of it, even as we're transported to a magical world-within-our-world of fairies. This is a definite 5 star read, in a different way than Lament, but still extraordinary and beautiful.

**spoilers below**It took me a month and a half to read this book...FAR TOO LONG. I just couldn't get into it. I was still caught up on Dee and Luke and when I started reading and figured out there wasn't going to be any real closure on that relationship, I was a little saddened. I hated the character Nuala from beginning to end and by the end of the book I wasn't that fond of James either...he ended up looking like a real jerk. I understand that he was in love with Dee. But he had years to tell her and waited until she fell in love with someone else to do so (typical) Then gets pissed at her for not feeling the same way and gets frustrated at her being heartbroken over her losing Luke (I'm assuming that's what has happened if there isn't going to be a book about them). Give the girl some time and credit for what she did do. I mean she did choose to save his life (james) over LukesI'll admit it was wrong of her to kiss James knowing how he felt about her and then tell him she was thinking of Luke while she did it...that was a pretty crappy thing to say and do. But other than that she was nice to James even when she needed him and he was too busy obsessing about her loving him. When Dee and Luke were together she never once rubbed it in James's face the way he did with his relationship with Nuala. Yeah, we get it he was moving on but did he really have to be such a (add really bad word here)I just really didn't much care for this book and I only read it b/c I had bought it and started it and I didn't want my money and little bit of time go to waste. There were parts in the book that just seemed kind of stupid and silly and I just didn't get it. Like, James dies when chasing Cernunnos????? Did he drag him through water? Did he die from just touching Cernunnos? Did Cernunnos just stop running and decide to kill him? And how did Nuala die too? Or where they really dead? They whole section seemed like it was added just to help with some sort of information that needed to be passed on to the reader but it just added to my hate of this book. When and why did Dee kill Linnet? Did she really see Luke? She mentions how They tricked her...how? Too much was said and then ignored later on so that I was left hanging and wondering. Una and Brennan appeared a bit why couldn't Luke? Frustration frustration.I guess I can see where people who are fans of James will like this book but I didn't know I was supposed to be pulling for him in the last book so I didn't really pay much attention to him until he grew a pair (too little too late)and told Dee he loved her. UGH..... This book just frustrates me and puts me in a bad mood. lol.On a different note...the description of things was beautiful. I could picture every little thing and all the colors and I could even imagine the smells.Since James the jerk and Nuala the (insert bad word rhyming with witch here) got a happy ending, all I can hope for it that Maggie Stiefvater will find it in her heart and creative imagination to give Dee and Luke one as well.I know a lot of people won't agree with me on this but that's ok...it's just different opinions. but I wouldn't mind it if anyone would like to clear up any of the questions above. :-)

I’m not into candles but I got this book for my mother who loves candles. Since I have it, I decided to read it so I can relate with my mom. I can’t believe how concise this book is, perfect for my mom who doesn’t want to read complicated books. The author made sure that all topics covered and understandable. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. My mom is so happy making candles at her home now. She loves experimenting on scents and making personalized scented candles as her present. She now has a new hobby that keeps her busy. I’m so glad I took this book for my mom though I’ll have to make room for more candles.

I give this book three stars because it doesn't have colour photos to see what the waxes look like and the details of them. But it does explain how it's done so I can understand what to do.

Good read! Excellent starting point for a new hobby. I will be starting and trying some of the techniques in this book by next week. I am so excited! Richards, does a good job making this an easy and understandable read.

This "book" is junk. I can't believe Amazon allows this worthless nonsense to be sold. I seriously want my money back as this is clearly a scam. There is literally nothing useful in this "book". It contains no technical information or processes. Don't be fooled like I was. Avoid this junk

This book is a great guide to making your own candles at home. The instructions are easy to follow. There were lots of creative ideas for making decorative candles, including ice candles and using spray paints and glitter. If you are looking for a easy read on making your own candles, this is it!

I really got this book for the ice candle instructions. It has been 5 decades since I made one as a kid, and I want to do it again. I love candles and want to try making some for myself.

Short but I guess you don't really need more. The editing and organization is not the best. There are quite a few errors.

Read this in a day, mostly common sense and a great reminder for when your just starting . Good info

Review

This book is amazing. The research unmatched even among text books. Has to be the best book on the topic. ---Stephen MichealI own over 200 books on hauntings and ghosts. This is BY FAR my absolute favorite! It didn't just rehash the same stories that you'll find in every other haunted Michigan book. It dug into the history of each story and added so many more details that I did not know about. I saw myself feeling educated about the city that I live in and wanting to know more. I can only hope second book is in the works. Kudos to the authors! I couldn't put it down! ---Vee SchniderMade me rethink the paranormal genre. I now want to be a haunted historian too. ---Drake StadioThis was one of the best paranormal books I have ever read, and I have read MANY of them. The historic back-stories that fed the modern paranormal activity was a brilliantly executed blend of history and ghosts. I look forward to reading more from these authors. --- Dan H

I admit that I should have purchased this book sooner, as I did happen to make a small contribution to a chapter. It is well worth any price that you pay. Allow me a few brief paragraphs to explicate:The information is nothing short of thorough, and the assumed hours-upon-hours of data retrieval is evident. For example, I was quite impressed with the depth of the real backstory of the Michigan Bell/AT&T Building murder-suicide haunting. The all-too-familiar story of domestic violence between the "Randalls" is explained as, yes, having happened on this property to a couple only a few years wed. The description of the crime scene and events leading up to the murder-suicide are coherent and remind the reader of the reality of this atrocity. The facts are presented with a touch of personal perspective, which does not lead one to sense a biased perspective from the authors; instead, it creates a triangular bond between the reader, authors, and the deceased couple. Many of the haunts described are quite popular local lore, but some of them are not much discussed. Supplementing the Hell's Bridge story (much of which appears fabricated regarding the existence of Elias Friske - something Friske family members deny to this day) are details regarding actual documented deaths that have occurred in the Algoma Township area. This prompts the authors to question whether or not these events play into the paranormal phenomena being reported and recorded at Hell's Bridge.Overall, this book is a delightful (though perhaps too short for this reader's taste; this is my only qualm, I swear) read, perfect for a "midnight dreary" in October.

This was more about crime, not the paranormal. There is enough material, it could have been good. Disappointed.

Nice update of Haunted Houses of Grand Rapids, with research above and beyond the original stories (e.g., Murder Most Foul re the wooden leg murder).

My aunt was very happy when she unwrapped this booked. Quality paper back.

Loved it! A must read if you are a GR native. There are sooooo many photos of old buildings, etc. that I remember from my childhood, and as an adult. Definitely worth the price.

Got this for a gift, I heard they love it!

I have read three books on this topic and this is the most scholarly of them all. This covers many of the same hauntings, but delves into public and private records to verify and clarify. A very interesting read.

Don't expect an edge-of-your seat, Amityville Horror-type of sensationalized recounting of urban myths and legends, this is a much more fact-based narrative that includes a lot of historic back-story. The authors spent a great deal of time going through public records, city history, and census records to deliver an extremely interesting account of haunted Grand Rapids. Just wish it was a bit longer!

From the Inside Flap

"What year are you preparing your students for? 1973? 1995? Can you honestly say that your school's curriculum and the program you use are preparing your students for 2015 or 2020? Are you even preparing them for today?" With those provocative questions, author and educator Heidi Hayes Jacobs launches a powerful case for overhauling, updating, and injecting life into the K 12 curriculum. Sharing her expertise as a world-renowned curriculum designer and calling upon the collective wisdom of 10 education thought leaders, Jacobs provides insight and inspiration in the following key areas: 1. Content and assessment--How to identify what to keep, what to cut, and what to create, and where portfolios and other new kinds of assessment fit into the picture; 2. Program structures--How to improve our use of time and space and our groupings of students and staff; 3. Technology--How it's transforming teaching, and how to take advantage of students' natural facility with technology; 4. Media literacy--The essential issues to address, and the best resources for helping students become informed users of multiple forms of media; 5. Globalization--What steps to take to help students gain a global perspective; 6. Sustainability--How to instill enduring values and beliefs that will lead to healthier local, national, and global communities; and 7. Habits of mind--The thinking habits that students, teachers, and administrators need to develop and practice to succeed in school, work, and life. Curriculum 21 is the ideal guide for transforming our schools into what they must become: learning organizations that match the times in which we live.

In Curriculum 21 Heidi Hayes Jacobs (ed.) and ten other authors combine to provide essays on what they term an essential curriculum for a changing world. In the first four chapters Ms. Jacobs covers what is essential for the schools of the 21st century. In chapter five Stephen Wilmarth reports on five socio-technology trends that change the way school has to be taught. Vivien Stuart, in the next chapter, discusses global education. In chapter seven Tim Tyson provides an example of a school that is successfully teaching a 21st century curriculum, the Mabry Middle School in Marietta, Georgia. In the following chapter Frank Baker discusses media literacy that are needed for modern education. Digital portfolios and curriculum maps are covered in the next chapter by David Niguidula. Jamie Cloud covers the topic of educating for a sustainable future. Alan November then discusses technology. Finally, Arthur Costa and Betta Kallick summarize the whole process of rethinking the curriculum for the 21st century. This book will be particularly useful for educators, but may have value for parents and students as well, Anyone interested in how education has to change in the modern era will also benefit. I rate it at four stars instead of five because it is a compendium of assorted topics and views and thus lacks the kind of coherence a single author might have.

I had the opportunity to see Heidi Hayes-Jacobs speak earlier this summer, so I was excited to read her book. While there was interesting content, it wasn't what I thought it would be. Several of the chapters were contributions from other authors (shame on me for not looking more closely before I purchased the book), and I didn't have much interest in some of the topics. I was also hoping for more practical classroom strategies that I could implement even with the constraints of a traditional classroom, but much of the book was about wholesale change in schools - something that simply isn't going to happen overnight. I did find the ideas intriguing and agree with much of what was written; it's just that I was expecting something different from what I got.

Not as cutting edge as I would like. I read on this topic a lot and much in this book is dated, with the high speed of internet publishing. Still there are good basic concepts and I think the sustainability education chapter were particularly good.

Nothing specifically wrong with the book. It was a required textbook for a class I was taking and will not be likely to ever pick it up again.

Hard to read and follow.

Really good book. Very informative. If you are experienced in 21st Century education some of the chapters might be useless but there are others which are really enlightening. I do recommend buying this book.

Tremendo regalo.

If you're looking for a book that makes you think this is a great one. It is a very thought provoking book on preparing students for 21 century learning. It really emphasizes a need to teach students for the future world and prepare students for jobs that may not even exist. This was used as a textbook in one of my masters courses and was one I really enjoyed reading.
