Eric knew from the first time he cast off the lines on "Stornoway" that his feelings for his college sweatheart, Margaret, were not going to survive the voyage. He could sense that when he returned to the Bahamas, his relationship with his family would be different. So began his right of passage under the guardianship of "Stornaway"'s mercurial owner Chris Treahy, who would hide that fact that he was terminally ill until near the end of the voyage.There is no vanity in this story. Appropriately, there is self-deprecating humor. Late in the book, Eric thanks the reader for their patience, citing "the conference of...two gripping fevers (of youth)- passion and ignorance." Needed this textbook for one of my classes and when I first got it, I bemoaned over how heavy it was. However, it's really easy to read and has a lot of great information. I'm not planning on going into land development but this really explained everything from feasibility/programming to site analysis to conceptual design to entitlements and permitting, etc. Very great resource!

This is a practical handbook for Civil Engineers who are interested in Land Development. In-depth technical aspects are also covered.

30+ chapters written by separate people and edited by no one. Repetitive subject matter. Also insconsistent use of terms. There is good info in some areas, but buried in lots of other verbiage. Everything from very useful like remediating contminated soil to the extremely obvious such as have enough chairs in public meetings. For next edition, invest in an editor.

I had this book for a micro class that was focused on strategy in my MBA program.It was a rich source of information. The only real big issue I had with it was that it assumed so much previous micro knowledge, that you really need to have taken a micro class at some level for it to make sense. There is a chapter that introduces most of the stuff you would cover in a micro class, but it is just one chapter and not an in-depth look at all you should know.The other issue was more based on the structure of my class, but is based partly on the book. The first eighty percent of the book is based on external strategy, but I know that firm structure is important, especially in terms of labor versus capital. In the sections that we covered, that there seemed to be an acceptance of some sort of monolithic firm that makes decisions in the markets. The only labor issue was in the history , section in one of the first chapters where the authors hit on Taylorism very briefly. Other than that, the internal structure of the firm was left until the last unit, and I would bet that my professor was not the first to elide that section. I would want to see firm structure more interspersed with how the firms compete in the market.Other than those two issues, I was impressed with the book, and would have kept it for a reference if it did not have a nice cash value.The below is a summation I wrote for the class, inspired by this book:There was a story tossed around at some point about Henry FordÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s crowning jewel, the River Rouge manufacturing plant. It was said that Ford, who owned the mines for the coal and iron ore and the plantations of rubber trees for the rubber, would have the ships unload their cargo on one end and the other end would spit out fully formed Ford automobiles. This is an example of perfect vertical integration from tree to tearing up the country roads. It is also, what may look to be the best way to realize profit in a market system is vertical integration. A firm will not have to be at the mercy of suppliers, and they can capture whatever profit the supplier firm might have, thus creating more profit within the firm.It is simplistic and wrong. One of the key insights of microeconomics is that there is a whole constellation of factors to take into consideration when looking at integration, either vertical or horizontal. These are termed Ã¢â‚¬Å“make-or-buyÃ¢â‚¬Â decisions (Besanko et al. p. 99) and they determine if a firm should obtain an input from a supplier on the market or bring it in-house. The ultimate takeaway is that the profit the supplier firms create is hard to capture because the supplier firms have their own learning curve and their own economies of scale. It may make no sense for an automobile manufacturer to make their own airbags when every manufacture needs airbags, and a supplier can specialize and sell airbags to several companies. This allows the supplier to have lower costs because they are operating at scale where a singular manufacture of automobiles would have higher costs because they are manufacturing for only themselves. The potential exist for the manufacture to be a supplier for other manufacturers, but that is rare because other manufactures do not want to be reliant on competitors for suppliers. This is why Delphi and Mopar were spun off the larger parent companies, and they have gone through further specialization themselves. A further incentive to buy in the market is that by having multiple suppliers a firm can buy an input at the market price and be shielded from any supply chain disruption. Competitive firms do realize a profit, but bringing production of an input in house is no guarantee of capturing that profit both because the supplier is working at scale and there is a potential for the supplier to get lost in the bureaucracy of the firm and the potential profits instead become costs to overhead. Ultimately, it can be the firm that does the least that is the most efficient because it can then utilize the learning curve and the economies of scale for that one thing that they do.There are other important takeaways of strategic microeconomics. An important thing to take into consideration is that the market is not everywhere and anywhere. A lot of goods and services are available through the internet. Call up Amazon and hope you find a good price and can trust the reviews, and you can buy most anything near the market price depending on how you get it shipped to you. Other products are very tied to the location of the consumer and the supplier. If a particular sweater is only available in Mongolia, and the firm does not ship it, then the buyer has to both find the sweater and go to Mongolia to obtain it. The location of a firm has some very real drivers on how much the customer is willing to pay. The ultimate cost of a good is not just the price paid in market, but also the time it takes to find it and get to it. There is the gas paid and the depreciation of the car, and the opportunity cost involved with the travel. What does a potential customer give up in terms of going to Mongolia to get that sweater? It can be so much that the firm could give them away to American customers and they would not be able to. Instead, the market for that sweater is more realistically geographically defined. Mitigating these search costs (Besanko et al. p. 179) is why it is so common to see multiple locations of some stores. In Chicago, there are DunkinÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ Donuts and Walgreens stores almost every other block. The reason is that though they sell differentiated products, the next best option is similar enough they have to put their stores everywhere or else they will lose potential sales to competitors.A third important take-away from studying the strategy of competitive markets is the importance of the demand curve. In macroeconomics, the demand curve is given and it is more conceptual, but the slope of the demand curve is important. It is also not wholly a straight line. Individual markets have their own demand curve, and they can be empirically measured to show the inverse relationship between quantity and price, so that the demand curve is a downward sloping line. This has two interesting consequences (Besanko et al. p. 20). First is that an individual firmÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s price flexibility is based on the demand curve. The less of a slope the demand curve has, also meaning the more elastic that demand is the less power an individual firm has to set prices. This can be seen in a perfectly competitive market. All the firms in a perfectly completive market have to charge the one price that is also the market rate where the average total cost curve and the marginal cost curve intersect. The downward sloping demand curve has an important consequence at the other end of potential market structures, in a monopoly. In a monopoly, the seller has pricing power, but they still have to face the quantity consequences of that pricing. If they try to take the price higher, they will lose customers. There is a theoretical point of price elasticity called perfectly inelastic demand, where the demand curve is a horizontal line, but that does not reflect the real world. Even in a world where a company had a monopoly on breathable oxygen, there would be a slope to the demand curve because ultimately, the willingness to pay would still be infinite, but the actual ability to pay would be finite. Ergo, there would be a backwards slope to the demand curve, and the monopolist is price constrained.These and other ideas in microeconomics are crucial takeaways from the science. Some things that may look to be common sense on the surface are actually more complex once the math is grafted on the too easy narrative statements. Integration is not always perfect, there is a cost to search, and the demand curve can be limiting. Usually, strategy and economics readings are much more engaging and mind-provoking.I had to buy it for my Business Processes course at business school (full time MBA program).

I teach strategic management to undergraduates at an Australian university and have used the 2nd and 3rd editions of this book in the past three years to supplement the theory from our prescribed texts. It is heavy going in some places for the students but I like the book's rigour. The only criticism I have is that the 4th edition I just received has some minor errors. For example, pages 20-21 in the "Economic Profit versus Acccounting Profit" section has errors in the figures quoted for economic profit for McDonalds and Starbucks. I think this has occured because the 3rd edition figures have been carried over to the 4th edition without a proper proof-reading. Another minor mistake is that Table 10.2 (page 329) should read "Five-Forces Analysis of the Commercial Aciation Industry" and not "Five-Forces Analysis of the Chicago Hospital Market". Sorry to be pedantic but I guess these things can detract from the perceived quality of an otherwise top-quality text. Please note I will be buying your next edition in a couple of years. Tsutomu Nihei is an internationally known Japanese comic artist and draftsman. Born in 1971, Nihei made his debut in the comics world as the winner of the 1995 Afternoon Magazine Four Seasons Award for short stories. I recommend Humanity Works to anyone who wants to know how to build better teams and shift your culture in a workforce where the old rules of power no longer apply.

Like you, I can share all sorts of anecdotes about how technology has modified my functions and tasks in the workplace in the last 10-15 years alone. A great example: documents and materials that were pieces of evidence to be used in litigation used to be produced by photocopy machines in which dozens if not hundreds of banker's boxes would be filled with sheets of photocopies of the original files. This is the stuff of magic.

Absolutely wonderful stories about Newfoundland. However, the Kindle text was marred by many errors.

Although I have not read "Baltimore's Mansion" yet I really enjoy Wayne Johnston's books. I'd bet anything that he would appreciate if his name was spelled Johnston rather than Johnson.

While true the period of time of "remaining righteous" may be finite, it needn't be necessarily short. In the case of the Johnston Family the third of that generation deals with the consequences to this day. "Baltimore's Mansion" is both true Family History together with the autobiographical experience of the Author. He may not have witnessed all he memorializes, but the feeling you get while reading is that if there is a line between the two it is seamless. And that this is true is due to the Author's insight into the memories of others he experiences as opposed to the memories that are his own.The prose of this book is rich it is thick and dense. I intend that comment in only the most positive manner. There is nothing extraneous as you read, every sentence is important; this book is as long as it needs to be, no more or no less. I always had the impression the Author chose each word or phrase he wrote carefully and with purpose. The writing needs no embellishment it is precise and honest.The book is about change, about change that is often not wanted, about progress that is anything but, rather it is a series of events that strips away a people's identity, the ground their homes are built upon, the jobs they have known for generations, and ultimately the Families themselves.The damage and dislocation that is suffered that is external is magnified by secrets and thought kept hidden for decades that if shared would have changed the lives of these Families. The book is about regret, missed opportunities, and an unwillingness to accept change that goes beyond simply sad to truly painful and destructive.I recently read "No Great Mischief" and while no 2 Authors are alike, I believe if you have read and enjoyed either you will enjoy them both.Whether describing an event that will change the course of a people, or of a young man sweeping away the imprints of horseshoes that do not bear his Father's mark (a Rose), the Author shows with great clarity the similarities and the futility of going against the tide.As to those who were on the "Winning" side as always the Author states it best, "We won, we won and nothing you can say can change that fact, and nothing makes victory sweeter than the enduring bitterness of men like you." The man being referred to here is the Author's Father.Wonderful book.

There is a dramatic nostalgia to this memoir that becomes overbearing by the end but is enticing and rich at the beginning. Johnston recounts the history of Newfoundlands confederation and how powerful an effect it had on his family. What becomes clear in the reading is how powerful (or how imagined) the pull of place can be. Johnston's father and grandfather are very immersed in their location but not just geographically but what it means to them spiritually or physically. And, yet, the grandfather apparently votes against Newfoundland remaining its own country and disappoints his son so powerfully that the son carries this disappointment with him and passes it on the author himself.What I find difficult in these books is the sense that the characters can't move on. Isn't there a moment when people can no longer hold onto that which was or that which they wished were? Apparently not.Baltimore, the title of the book, refers to one of the first settlers to the area who arrived in the 17th century, weathered one winter and fled after most of his group died, largely as a result of the horrific winters. Clearly Newfoundland is not a warm and welcoming place, but that doesn't matter and that's what the author does such a good job conveying."

Any book that can make a reader who hales from the land of pleasant living (i.e., the mid-Atlantic region of the United States) seriously consider spending a winter in Newfoundland is clearly worth reading. Wayne Johnston once again manages to turn what most of us would consider a very dull subject (growing up in Newfoundland) into a minor masterpiece. If you enjoyed "Colony of Unrequited Dreams," you will be equally charmed, intrigued and entranced by "Baltimore's Mansion" but in a more personal -- and, perhaps, more meaningful -- way. I expect that if Mr. Johnston were from the USA, his books would stay at the top of the best seller lists. As it is, he remains a bit of a hidden treasure. Perhaps "Baltimore's Mansion" will help change the situation.

Being from the other side of the confederation with Canada event (my family was pro-confederation), I found Johnson's memoir a real eyeopener to the sense of defeat and angst found in the loss of Newfoundland's precarious nationhood. The political subtext amplifies the family melodrama of loss and defeat. Although a bit too `Irish' for my taste in Newfoundland set stories, the writing is profound and the best in the english language currently being turned out these days. Johnson's family were smiths with iron and his writing is the same; that is, he turns the raw iron of language into something minimal, economical and heavy that carries the weight and experience of generations. Like the anchors, nails, and iron shoes, Johnson's writing will stand the test of time's weathering I'm sure.

Me and two of my friends (Natalia and Sarah) decided to use this book for our book club because we're in the fifth grade like Brianna. We wanted to experience her fifth grade year to see if we could have a race for president of the whole fifth grade but unfortunately we can't because student council already has president of the whole elementary and that person has to be in fifth grade. So since we couldn't have a race I cheered Brianna on through out her battle against Jasmine moon . And as long as Brianna competed she never gave up on her winning against Jasmine moon and she always had the courage to do what others wouldn't. So that's why I LOVE this book soo much! The author who wrote this book is one smart woman and I LOVE her work. She is the most inspiring author I have ever liked. She's #1 and so is another fantastic writer named Meg Cabot and they are my inspiration to read more and more books by them and famous authors. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVEZ! :) #1 I LOVE IT!

There is plenty in this book that I found to like. It features an ambitious African American girl who sets no limitations on her future. Those ambitions are not superficial things like being a movie star or pop star, or hoping to marry her favorite movie/pop star. Not only does she have serious entrepreneurial aspirations but also practical plans for how to begin moving towards them. It starts with becoming President of her grade at school. Enter a conniving rival who is willing to stoop as low as necessary to throw a monkey wrench in these plans. Enter an ally who encourages her to put ambition ahead of ethics. Eventually Brianna learns that ambition is as noble as the path one takes to to make their dreams come true. If success comes at the expense of losing loyal friends and losing respect for yourself, can it be considered true success? I applaud the message of this story but feel that the execution could have been a little tighter. There was also one too many easily found "deep dark secrets" lying around for convenient plot machination. I'm not the intended audience of this book though. My 8 year old daughter loved it from beginning to end. There's much to be said for satisfying your target reader above and beyond anyone else.

Such a great book. I read the book as well so that my daughter and I could talk about the contents and the characters. She loved the book and so did I!

My grand daughter is a junior in high school and she still loves this book. I decided to pass on the reading to four more fifth graders. They will enjoy the reading
