Now ‘Swimming in the Steno Pool...’ has definitely changed since women are now looked upon as equal instead of just “steno takers”. I related so much to Lynn Perils previous “retro” books. I do remember not getting what I was worth coming out of college, and I do remember bringing coffee to an exec when all he had to do was turn around and get it himself 😂😂..but I also compared this to what many of my moms friends had to go through to make the same or close to the same money as their co workers who usually were men. So A LOT has changed yet NOT everything in the business world!! Excellent book!! I received it as a paperback & im so glad I did. Came exactly as described & in perfect condition!! 5 ⭐️⭐️

As a woman of a certain age, I grew up during the period of time described in this book. It was a nostalgic (and sometimes hilarious) walk back through my working career. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and I intend to read it again!

This book was listed as humor but after reading about 1/5 of the book, I hadn't smiled once much less laughed. It was all about the history of stenos/secretaries and was so boring that I quit before I got very far into it.

As a former secretary and someone who knew Gregg shorthand I found the book a trip down memory lane. I don't think women realized (and that includes me) how lucky we were to have guaranteed employment if we had secretarial skills. Sadly, the profession was denigrated. Today, no one answers their mail, things are disorganized, we need to bring back secretaries!

Great history of secretarial profession.

So far it's been fun and informative - a great peek into the past!

Very informative, insightful, and fun. Couldn't find a copy to check out from the library, so I bought a used one from here....I don't regret it.

Fun read, but very derivative of her previous books. She seems to be running out of ideas, which is worrisome, considering that this is only her third book. Those who have not read her two previous books might find this book fascinating and different, however.

I just have to say this first: I LOVED this book! And I also have to say that it was a little out of my comfort zone. Written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, this is a book about Nigeria. And Nigerians. And Nigerians who move to the United States. And England. And then move back to Nigeria. What does a white woman from the 'burbs—even though those 'burbs are considered THE most diverse city in the country (according to a 2017 WalletHub analysis of 313 U.S. cities)—know about Nigeria? Well, that, my friends, is the joy and wonder of reading. We can experience what we do not know in our limited real lives.Ifemelu and Obinze are in love. They are teenagers in Lagos, Nigeria with big dreams for the future that, for the most part, do not involve Africa. Ifemelu has an opportunity to move to the United States for college. Obinze, who cannot get a visa, still encourages her to go. She lives a life separate from him and does something that is so destructive to her soul she fully separates herself from Obinze—without telling him why. The book alternates between their two stories, as well as in the past and present, but the writing is so perfect this all works seamlessly.But more than anything else, "Americanah" is a book about life and hope. Love and regret. Racism, prejudice and justice. Leaving home and going back. It is a book that speaks truths profound and witty. It is a book to be cherished.

This is the first time that I have rated a book 5 stars! Adichie has now become my all time favorite writer. Her writing is exquisite, intelligent, somber, and thought provoking among other accolades that I can't quite describe. I have been an avid reader for the past 60 years. Although I have read some excellent books, I can truly say that this story left no stone unturned, no questions left unanswered. I am not a reviewer, but I know what I like! I don't like reviews that dissect each and every character, tell the plot, theme, problem and resolution. I just want to know why one does, or does not like a story. Therefore, I will do just that. Adichie's characters are well fleshed out. She gets in their mind, body, and soul. She is a fluent writer, so lyrical. I traveled with them. Wanted to understand them. And I really wanted to taste their food and learn some Igbo. I just don't know what took me so long to find Ms. Adichie. Shame on me!

A June, 2016 Pew research study was titled On Views of Race and Inequality, Blacks and Whites are Worlds Apart. While interesting, the Pew study, like so much of what we "know" about America, comes in a distilled abstraction that does not elicit a feeling. In Americanah, Chimamanda Ngozi Aditchie personalizes the various and real meanings of race, racism, black, white, foreign, and native, and describes feelings of anger, hurt, joy and love as she follows a Nigerian couple from high school into the beginning of middle life. Together and in love as young people in Africa they eventually move apart, to different parts of the world, seeing themselves over and over again through the eyes of those raised in cultures that they had long admired, but surprised and confused by the disconnect between expectation and reality, struggling to hold on to their dreams and failing. Their friends follow much the same trajectory and each reconciles to their new culture differently, giving up parts of themselves and acquiring new parts to survive.This is a wide ranging, smart novel that makes the ideas of race and color and gender real in the context of the sexual, political, religious and intellectual cultures of America, Nigeria and England. Ifemelu, the young woman we follow from Africa to America and back, at one point, frustrated by a young American white woman who asks about the book she is reading thinks, "Why (do) people ask “What is it about?” as if a novel ha(s) to be about only one thing." This novel is about many many things.And though she is not optimistic about racism in America, Aditchie gives us one answer from Ifemelu: "The simplest solution to the problem of race in America? Romantic love. Not friendship. Not the kind of safe, shallow love where the objective is that both people remain comfortable. But real deep romantic love, the kind that twists you and wrings you out and makes you breathe through the nostrils of your beloved. And because that real deep romantic love is so rare, and because American society is set up to make it even rarer between American Black and American White, the problem of race in America will never be solved."

As a west African born and raised in Senegal but immigrated to the U.S. At a young age, I had always wanted to see a story like mine captured in a work of fiction. I used to think that I would have to write that book myself, since I really could not see it on bookshelves. I'm referring to books about being an African immigrant to the United States. How we identify racially and how that is different from African Americans. Some of the challenges with immigration papers, unemployment, and being taken advantage of due to our lack of familiarity with the American system.Needless to say, I absolutely adored this book. It was incredibly well-written and worth all 500+ pages necessary. The characters were so alive o felt like they were in the same room as me. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite books.

This has some good information, but unfortunately, too much of the author's bias is evident.

As a budding musician, I know that I need to have the basic skills to be able to branch out into my own style. I have read many "adult" books about music and I find myself confused, or just plain bored. The other day I remembered that when I wanted to learn about something, I went to the library and checked out kid's books. I started doing this again. I did not purchase this book, but, in fact, did check it out from the library. I have to say, it has truly been a very long time since I was in school, and I don't remember learning a lot of this stuff. Ms. Latham has taken a subject I am already interested in and made it so easy for me to learn more (or perhaps re-learn) some basics on music. I particularly enjoyed the little side notes, telling the reader to listen to certain songs, or watch certain videos. While I have to admit, I didn't do most of the experiments (they would be great for a kid interested in music though), I did the exercises and I loved it!

This work is a detailed, character-driven charmer about a veritable host of love relationships including parent /child, brother/ sister, friend/friend, sweetheart/sweetheart, spouse/spouse, God/Creation and almost everything in between. It is most definitively Christian in orientation but does not "preach" to readers, rather shares the values in the characters' experiences and relationships. It is exceptional in those very characters who meet life's circumstances and challenges with faith, hope and true and sincere love. The reader is asked to invest in those to glean the jewels of the book. The pace is measured and requires patience and thought to succeed. There is no force-fed action-fest here. A reader unwilling to make such investment might possibly rate this one boring. However, the exact opposite is true for those willing to settle in and invest some consideration. You may, for instance, experience a walk through a totally foreign culture where life is vastly different and the real riches are of the heart and not of the hand. If so, enjoy !!!

I love Lori Wick's stories, the. Characters are strong believable. I always learn the spiritual lessons right along with the characters. This story is about a man who has set himself above the members of his own family in order to fit in with the foreigners he is ministering to. In the end he has an awakening and life for his Lily is mended. A love story with heart.

Good book

I re-read this book about three times a year. I love the relationships between Gabe and his family, and between Lily and Gabe, and Lily and Ling-li. There are great examples in parenting and in dealing with difficult people. I highly recommend this book.

I am a huge fan of Lori Wick's work. I have read them all (more than once), and this is one of my favorites. Realistic characters and story line. Interesting to think about the differences between cultures. Loved it!

Another high score for Lori Wick!! The first book I've read by her was The Knight and the Dove and I was instantly hooked. Lori Wick sets the bar high for Christian Fiction novelists everywhere. She has reminded me on so many occasions of how I should submit myself to our Heavenly Father.With her added romance, I can never put her books down! I highly recommend this book to you :) It keeps your mind open and your heart filled over every turn of the page. I'm not going to explain the book, you'll just have to find out for yourself! Hopefully I proved you right! :)

Bamboo and Lace was a good book, however, I (at times) found it boring and felt that the summary on the back of the book seemed more exciting than the actual book! The second time I read this I found more depth and I appriciated the story more. But I still disliked that Lily was in some ways, naive, immature? I understand that Wick is trying to make Lily seem sheltered, but sometimes it just makes her look stupid. This is definately a novel for more mature readers, not people looking for an adventure entertwined with romance. This is a good read, just be ready for a fairly predicatable plot.

A good first book and fills the space for those who do not know what Mr. Bloom will teach you. I would definitely recommend getting his follow up book as well.

It provided all the information I was looking for when it comes to using life insurance as an investment tool

Unreal and thought provoking. Teaching not only myself but my kids to build a legacy of change in how we become wealthy!

Mr. Bloom does a wonderful job of explaining 6 key areas of our financial life that we have been mislead on by financial advisors and Wall Street experts.By using a properly structured Whole Life Policy we effectively create our own internal "economic system" that removes the necessity to take unwanted risks, while at the same time realizing 5-7% tax free annual gains rather than just tax deferred. The best part is having access to my hard earned capital (without rules or restrictions) anytime I need it.If more people really understood this simplistic planning and life tool, we would have no need for mutual funds, ETF's, stock brokers, or even the so called "experts" we hear on the radio or see on TV. The only financial advisor I have ever heard in the media that understood this product and its benefits is Ed Sloot.The reason this technique will never become mainstream....too many people and companies exist by giving us advice and teaching us how to invest, while skimming fees and expenses off of our own personal nest eggs.Great book Mr. Bloom, you have rejuvenated my belief and completely reminded me why my whole life policies (3) are the safest and smartest savings tool in my retirement portfolio.

I just finished reading Mr. Bloom's book and really enjoyed it. It was a quick and easy read. As a retirement income planner who uses Index Universal Life as a retirement income planning tool, he reinforces what I have been presenting to my clients for many years. I plan to give copies of it to my prospective clients. I am on the same track as Mr. Bloom when counseling my clients on how to save for retirement. The only thing I spend more time explaining is the tax deductions for a 401k-403b participant. I explain taxes are a graded procedure. You start out with your annual income, then first deductions are their personal exemptions, then the itemized or standard deductions including mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable deductions THEN their 401k-403b deduction. Because the first deductions reduces their income, the 401k-403b deduction is then written off at the lowest taxed bracket. When they retire, they are taxed at the highest bracket because, as Mr. Bloom writes in this book, the deduction for your children and mortgage are gone. I explain to my prospective clients that their HR department always encourages them to enroll in a qualified plan to reduce their current taxes without explaining the future tax problems. Most employee's have never even thought about the future and taxes when enrolled in a Qualified Plan. Mr. Bloom's book does an excellent job of explaining the future tax problem.

I learned a lot from reading this book. I was especially gratified to learn about the importance and value of whole life (cash value) life insurance.A well-meaning financial planner advised me to cash in my policy with the idea of investing the proceeds for a "higher return". I am just at the point of being able to truly benefit from the compounding benefits of having held this policy for nearly three decades. As it is, there is enough cash value to pay my bills for nearly three years; within less than seven or eight years there will be considerably more cash value that could cover my expenses even longer PLUS leave (tax-free) monies after my death. What a mistake this would have been to cash out this policy! Mr. Bloom makes it clear what a valuable, versatile financial instrument a whole life (cash value) life insurance policy is.And that is just one benefit of thoughtfully reading the book. There are many more as other reviewers have noted. For example, I've known for some two decades about the benefit of NOT paying off one's mortgage. Seems counter-intuitive? Buy this book and find out why it is not!Mr. Bloom's book was a marvelous investment of my (purchase) money and (reading)time.

This is the best sports biography I ever read. Cobb,by Stump's account, was more of a ruffian than I ever imagined. He was a borderline personality type who was motivated in large measure by the need to prove himself to a father that had been murdered before Ty became famous.This is a fascinating tale of an egomaniacal man who drove himself to excellence.Imagine stealing home 54 times in a career and winning 13 batting titles. If he wasn't the greatest all-around player of all time, I don't know who was.Sadly, only three major league players attended his funeral.Such was the hatred for the man who played the game like it was a matter of life and death. I have since learned that there is valid reason to doubt some of the story that Stump tells.The author was alleged to have fabricated some collectibles of Cobb that he sold to the highest bidder.In spite of the claims,the stats don't lie and most of the story is likely true.

I just watched the movie "Cobb" which was based on this book. Very entertaining as was the book. Only trouble is, it is mostly fiction. Al Stump was an alcoholic hack who was lucky enough to get the job of ghostwriting Cobb's autobiography. Thereafter he turned this brief success into a cottage industry. A magazine article, a second book, and a movie deal, etc. All more sensational than the last. He gained a reputation as "THE Cobb Expert" and made a career out of it.Some of the lies told in the book and screenplay: Mickey Cochrane was portrayed as a pitiful bum who Cobb supported for many years. Cochrane's family vehemently disputes this. His wife said that Cobb once loaned Mickey some money which was repaid. Cochrane did show up at the Hall Of Fame ceremonies without a tuxedo one year simply because he didn't know he needed one and Cobb was nice enough to provide one. Cochrane was one of Cobb's closest friends. He attended Cobb's funeral. It is a shame that his reputation was besmirched after his death. Dr. Rex Teeslink of Augusta,Georgia attended Cobb the last three months as a medical student. Dr. Teeslink says he say none of the wild behavior Stump describes. None of the others who treated him saw crazy behavior either. No one saw a gun. One young nurse who sat up all night with him two months before he died said he was very pleasant. Just a sick old man in pain who couldn't sleep. He gladly signed a couple of baseballs for her. Was he a difficult patient at times? I expect so. So are a lot of sick people. Stump describes a falling out with Ted Williams over a petty disagreement after which they never spoke again. Williams said Stump was "full of it". He and Cobb remained friends to the end. Stump pretends he was Cobb's constant and only companion the last 14 months, when the truth is they would meet occasionally for a few days at one of Cobb's homes or at Stump's place. Hardly a constant companion. Stump last saw Cobb three months before he died. As for the memorabilia scandal, Stump had a lot of Cobb's personal items which it is suspected that he stole. He created a myth about his fabulous Cobb collection and he began selling an endless number. He made a mint. It is now well known that hundreds of items were forgeries. He even sold Cobb's so called wristwatch which had stopped at the moment of his death! He would be in prison had he not had the good sense to die first. Read this book and watch the movie as fictional entertainment if you wish. I would guess some of the sensational stuff has basis in fact, but is overblown and most is sheer fabrication. Stump was a known liar, a known forger, and suspected thief. A man of no character. I would not believe one word he says. As for Cobb, it is well known that he was a racist, a hard drinker, a terrible husband and father, and generally disagreeable much of the time. It is also a fact that he had a lot of friends despite what his enemies say. His funeral was poorly attended only because it was private. Ty could also be kind and generous. A brilliant businessman who amassed a fortune. He left much of his money to charity. A great and complex man. He has to own his misdeeds, but to be piled on after his death with blatant lies is unfair.

This book had a lot of details about Ty Cobb's life and baseball career and I learned a lot about him that I didn't know before. I knew he was a great baseball player, but this book puts him to the proper perspective that he is one the greatest players of all time and deserves mention with Ruth, Mays, and Aaron as the best of all time. Complaints of the book is that organization of the story could've been better and jumped around a little bit on the timeline. Also a few of stories about Cobb seemed too outlandish to be considered true and it makes you wonder if the accusations against Al Stump are indeed true.

I was disappointed with this book. Perhaps because I am a big fan of Charles Alexanders' book "Ty Cobb", which is very different than Stump's. Where Alexander is precise and well-researched, Stump appears to be vague. Alexander presents facts and let the reader go from there; Stump colors our interpretation of Cobb by asserting unsubstantiated rumors or hearsay as fact.Nonetheless, this is an entertaining book. The reader does get a feel for what a complex and driven person Ty Cobb was, and what a great player he was. Stump's book does have the benefit in that the author reveals his personal interactions with Cobb, which really gives a feel for what interacting with Cobb was like. However, the end result is not nearly as satisfying as I had hoped it would be.

This doesn't portray the real Ty Cobb.

This being the third "biography" I've read on Cobb in the last few weeks, I'd have to say that while a very entertaining book to say the least, much of the content is based on little more than rumor. Stump intentionally did his best to paint a very unfair picture of Ty Cobb as a twisted maniac for nothing short of a paycheck from a publisher. I was very disappointed."My Life in Baseball" by Cobb, (ghost-written by Stump), is the other side of the story, white-washed by Cobb for sure, but a "must read" for everyone who reads Stumps book.You know the old saying; "There's three sides to every story."? I would highly recommend reading Alexander's biography first, just to get the facts and none of the rumor, and then read the opposing views of this absolutely fascinating story.

I studied under Dr. T.J. Betts who studied under Dr. Fuller. He taught us using the Fuller method. This method of learning Hebrew is thorough, each chapter providing a scaffolding for the next. The chapters are short and well organized, allowing the student to work easily through the content. The footnotes are money and need to be more incorporated in the text itself, in my opinion. If you hold fast and do the work, the student will walk away from this text with a sound understanding of the Hebrew language.

This book is excellent in that it is the first Hebrew grammar book which I have had which taught accents. A friend of mine now has a copy which is used for teaching in a theological college. The accents are used to create rhythm. If we can have rhythm in worship in English then the service is improved immensely.

This looks promising. I am excited about digging into it. Are there video lectures associated with this?
