First, let's deal with a few of the other reviewers' complaints. Some of them are just not legitimate.This is a STUDY Bible, all right? Study Bibles are too big and heavy to carry to church. They're for study, at home. If you want a Bible for church, buy a slimline or pew Bible, but don't complain about how big and heavy this is. Read the weight before you buy and the number of pages.Now for the margins. The side margins are a half inch and the top and bottom about 3/8 inch in the large print version. If you think these are two narrow (as some reviewers seem to), it's because this is a large print Bible and they're trying to make it thinner. Wider margins would have required more pages.Now for the darkness and size of the type. Bibles are printed on thinner paper so they aren't as heavy or as thick as they could be. There's a compromise between the thickness of the paper and show-through. With thinner paper, printers have to decrease the density or darkness of the type, so it doesn't show through to the other side. The type in this Bible is easily readable. There's nothing wrong with it at all. And, the large print is fine for my 62 year old bifocal eyes.So much for answering others' complaints. The footnotes in this version are helpful and clear. They provide some much-needed explanation and practical application of the text. The only complaint I have is when there's excessive references to other verses or other footnotes. Too much back-and-forth is laziness on the part of editors.That said, if you love to read and STUDY your Bible, you'll enjoy this one as much as I'm enjoying it. What we want more than anything is to understand what we're reading and be able to apply it to our life. This Bible gets high marks on both counts, thanks to the informative articles and good footnotes.Five stars because the NIV Study Bible will definitely help you in your desire to get closer to God.

Excellent study bible, especially for beginners. Lots of detail, maps and charts.

Just received today. It's very nice, very detailed. The leather cover is very nice. Also has a leather second page, or dust cover. The pages are great, not too thin, not too thick. Just right. Plus all the pictures and extra details are great to have. Being this is my first study bible and being new to reading the Bible all together, it's nice to have that extra information. I'm very glad I spent the extra money on this. Great quality.

This review is for the hardcover edition of the NIV Study Bible 2011 in book form (not Kindle).One thing to notice right from the start is that this new study Bible is called "NIV Study Bible" and not "Zondervan NIV Study Bible".Initially I was reluctant to purchase another updated NIV Study Bible (since I've had several improved versions already of the NIV Study Bible); However, when I opened this updated edition and began reading it, I recognized right away that there were significant improvements.A. The NIV text is revised -- this Study Bible uses the updated 2011 text rather than the 1984 NIV text. The main difference in the updated 2011 text is use of more gender inclusive language ("brothers and sisters" instead of brethren), and significant differences in translation than the 1984 NIV version.Here are some of the significant changes:1) Psalm 23: 4: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil ..." (2011 version); the older version (1984) reads "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."2) In Genesis 1:6 the 1984 version says, "And God said, 'let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water"; in the 2011 version, Gen. 1:6 says, "Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water."3) Rom. 1:16: The 1984 version leaves out the conjunction "For" in the beginning: "I am not ashamed of the gospel .." The 2011 version correctly adds "For" in the beginning: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel.."4) Rom. 8:5 The 1984 version translates the Greek word "sarx" as "sinful nature": "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." The 2011 version is much improved: "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance to the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." The 2011 translation "flesh" is much more accurate and closer to the original. I had a very difficult time accepting the 1984 translation "sinful nature" -- it is a mistranslation of "sarx," which should be translated as "flesh" (cf. ESV, NASB, NRSV)5) Phil. 2:6 (2011): "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage" (1984 version says " .. consider equality with God as something to be grasped.").6) 1 Cor. 7:1 (2011): "Now for the matters you wrote about: 'It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman'"; the 1984 version says "It is good for a man not to marry."While I preferred Gen. 1:6 and Psalm 23:4 in the 1984 version, I liked the significant changes in the NIV (2011) as listed above. To its credit, this 2011 NIV text still retains the Messianic title "Son of Man" in Daniel 7:13; it did not go the way of the NRSV and translate it as "someone like a human being."One thing that teachers using the 2011 NIV text need to know is that it reads differently from the NIV 1984 version. When I read from the NIV 2011 to my Sunday School students, they asked me, "Which Bible are you reading from?" Many of them had the 1984 NIV and the new 2011 version had different wording.B. New updated features, charts and articles1) There are colored introductions to each Bible book; colored illustrations, maps, and charts. These colored illustrations make this updated version much more appealing to read2) Slightly updated notes -- the notes are very similar to the 2008 updated Zondervan NIV Study Bible. Where do I begin....I absolutely LOVE this bible. I bought it as a replacement to my older Women's NIV study bible, and I could not be happier. I bought the actual hard copy of the book, not the electronic copy (because when it comes to reading the bible I want the physical book). The colorful pages, maps, etc. are just an added bonus to the nice quality of this bible.

Janet Horvath, Assosiate Principal Cello of the Minnesota Orchestra for over two decades, is a soloist, chamber musician, writer and advocate for injury prevention. A trail-blazer in speaking and writing openly about the physical stresses experienced by musicians, Horvath has contributed importantly to improvements in working conditions and in awareness for musicians' work-related ailments and their prevention. Ms. Horvath received the American String Teachers Association Service Award in1992 in recognition of her outstanding efforts on behlaf of musicians' health, and in 2001 she was selected to deliver the Richard J. Lederman keynote lecture at the Preforming Arts Medicine Association's nineteenth Annual Symposium on Medical Problems of Musicians and Dancers. She has conducted seminars called "Playing (less) Hurt" all over the nation. When I started playing the cello as an adult, several years ago, my cello teacher recommended Janet Horvath's book, Playing (Less) Hurt, when I complained of pain in my thumbs, elbow and back. I am now playing more relaxed and with little pain, thanks to the help of her book! She clearly described what was causing my pain and recommended ways to play my instrument to avoid injury. I found her use of anatomy diagrams and figures helpful for understanding how to warm up, how to sit and be more relaxed when playing my instrument, and how to stretch between practice sessions. As a new string player, I have found her guidance very helpful. However, her book is not just for string musicians. I also play the piano and a brass instrument. Her recommendations are very helpful for how to continue playing these instruments without pain too. I want to be involved in music throughout my life--I have found in Janet's book a companion guide to help me do this. I highly recommend this book to any musician! I have benefited so much from her book, that I have purchased three copies for the other members of a piano-string quartet with which I am currently playing.

I can't speak directly as to how helpful it has been, but my daughter has been using it since I bought it for her last year. She is a professional cellist with breast cancer and wants/needs to continue to play her instrument. Janet (the author) is also a survivor and was/is a professional cellist. Okay. Without being grim about it, there are a lot of books-for-cancer-survivors in general and even a fair number for musicians specifically. To be blunt, I gave this one a chance as the author's experience closely matched my daughter's situation. My daughter says that it has helped her a lot in her recovery and it is likely to be used as a reference for a long while to come.

I think this a pretty good book for every skill level musician. I am a general surgeon and a beginner on the classical guitar ( I have already a tendinitis on my left thumb for holding the guitar too tight), and I found the tips on this book really helpful, and the anatomic/physiopathologic explanations very accurate. I'm giving this book to a friend who is a violin player.So why 4 stars only? The author of this book is a cello player and although the book tries to cover a little bit of every instrument, the most of the examples are made up about cello playing, of course. As a guitar player, I was hoping some specifics about the guitar playing less hurt, but I think SOME things the author says can be extrapolated to guitar playing.Anyway, I highly recommend this book to any professional musician who cares for his career or any hobby musician who cares for his body health.

I have just finished reading this magnificent book. Amazing! I am so impressed by the incredible work that Ms. Horvath has done on the issues that plague many musicians. This book has invaluable advice on how all musicians, young and older, can avoid repetitive stress injury entirely. In spite of world class training, I 've had lower back surgery, hearing loss, and both reconstructive hand and shoulder surgery in the course of my 30 year career. It took me these injuries and years of thinking and experimenting to arrive at the conclusions contained within the book; the book is an incredibly valuable weath of knowledge and information that will educate musicians to practice and play smarter, healthier and happier! I plan to make it required reading for all of my students at my university. I also recommend it highly to my colleagues! As a beginning cello student, I find the book very helpful for working to avoid the behaviors that lead to tension and stress. Her lists of things to do and to remember (pages 47 and 189, for example) serve as constant reminders of ways to relax and avoid injury. John

Author Janet Horvath covers everything from the typical aches & pains musicians experience through potentially career-ending injuries. Throughout the book she offers research based injury prevention strategies, warm-up and cool-down suggestions, stretches & exercises, photos & drawings, and product descriptions. Part Four is an exemplary Resources section that includes: books, chairs/cushions for posture, products, dental, hearing, performance stress, instrument adapters and modifications, an international list of medical practitioners and websites. Reading this book prompted me to make changes that will allow me to play for many more years.

Excellent book, but a little too much information for me. Perfect if you want to be an expert on the subject and be able to diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments.

Oh how I wish I had received this book long ago, before I sustained significant nerve and rotator cuff injuries! This is an absolute must-have for any serious musician, and as far as I am concerned, for any music teacher. These concepts should be taught from the very beginning!Great, clear layout. Super 10-step lists (such as 10 warm-up stretches, 10 on-stage stretches, etc. etc.). FANTASTIC!

The way the poems are structured on the page tell the story and convey the mood of a scene just as effectively as the words.The story is conveyed in a deftly succinct, but rich and moving way. The minimal approach to storytelling really makes the character come alive in your mind. I felt at home in Xioâ€™s head, comfortable and able to understand her heart through the language And pacing Acevedo utilizes like a great chef utilizes familiar but perfectly balanced flavor profiles.If you enjoy great writing and a unique approach to storytelling, you will love this book.As for my personal experience with The Poet X?Poetry has always felt like nourishment to my soul, but Iâ€™ve never felt it pierce so deeply and so directly into my heart as this book and its narrative poetry managed to do. As a Latin blooded teenager, I felt all wrong in my own body compared to my white friends, and I related to Xioâ€™s discomfort in a lot of ways. While she became tough, I became invisible. My story isnâ€™t like hers, except that I too found comfort in words and writing. I found enough connection to move me to tears by the end of this beautiful, heartfelt story about finding your words. I love this book. It has become an instant favorite. Beautiful and moving and earnest doesnâ€™t even begin to cover it. Anyone who has latinx roots, has ever been a teenage girl, has ever struggled to find our voice, or who has a compassionate, empathetic heart should read this book.

A friend of mine had been telling me about this book for months and it just released so I had to get a copy for my daughter. I'm into the YA genre so I just had to read it for myself first. What I loved most is the poetry form style in which Ms. Acevedo tells the story of teen Xiomara Batista who is trying to navigate a complex life with New York City as the backdrop. It's a very quick yet powerful read but I got so much out of her story in those 357 pages (not every page is filled to the bottom so it goes quickly). Of course as a mother, I was concerned about certain themes being too mature for my daughter but we talked through it as she read it. It was so beautifully done and cannot wait to read whatever else Ms. Acevedo has in store.

This is my favorite book of 2018, so far.The power behind the lines in this book is undeniable. I felt like tiny hammers were pinging the words into my heart. I read some pages two, three, four...seven times because they were so eloquent, heavy and impactful.Hereâ€™s a favorite stanza from page 340:â€œThat love can be a band:tears if you pull it too hard,but also flexible enoughto stretch around the most chaotic mass.â€Mami and Xiomaraâ€™s relationship is so raw and intense, I felt like I was flinching during so many of their scenes together.So many of the characters complement Xiomara so well...Ms. Galiano, Twin, Caridad, Aman, Father Sean...This book captures the horrible, painful and metamorphic experience of growing up and magnifies it all with a layer of cultural norms and immigrant narratives. Holy cow.This is the full package.

If I could, I'd go back in time and give my teen self this book.This book is about a Latinx teen girl named Xiomara as she learns to use poetry to cope with questioning her mother's religion & strictness as well as her coming of age. Ms. Acevedo's verses are so amazing that I found myself bookmarking pages or verses that stood out to me. As a poet, I could tell that the author honed her craft well.Not only were the poems powerful, but the story they told was relatable. Xiomara's experience with religious questioning, a strict mother, sexual harassment from her peers, and poetry were things that made me cheer & ache for her.It's been a few years since I last read a verse novel, but this is definitely a new favorite. I loved this as both a reader & a poet and I will be using this book to fuel my own poetry in the future.

Purchased for my granddaughter. She just enrolled in ASL continuing education class. She learned some signing while in high school and then they discontinued the class due to budget cuts and she wants to complete both levels. She loves signing.

The text is solid as a teaching resource but not something I would recommend. The DVD is poorly produced as an educational tool; the actors sign much too quickly for beginners, and it becomes a joke to students instead of a resource. Therefore, the DVD is unhelpful at best and harmful if you consider demoralizing effects of failure and frustration on student motivation to learn. This problem is particularly important because many of the picture definition entries in the text are difficult to decipher, and the DVD is little help in that regard.The text is not very engaging. It is comprised mostly of grammar rules and definition entries, with too few learning exercises to employ and practice the material. The indexes in the back of the book are poorly done for a textbook.It definitely outperforms the other "go-to" text people seem to use, Vista Signing Naturally (which has a lot of problems), but it's not a strong text. Neither text seems grounded in foundations of theory on education, or uses what is known from research in education and psychology about learning and memory, foreign language aquisition, etc. Lastly, it's expensive for what you get, especially the DVD.It took longer than expected to arrive, especially given that I have Prime service.

This book is easy to follow. My daughter & I took a basic signing class at our local college as she wanted to teach her baby how to sign so we could understand what she wanted before she had learned to speak. Not only did we learn sign language, but my granddaughter picked up on it very quickly and was signing by the time she was 5 months old. It's nice to be able to communicate --- even if it is just a word or phrase at that age! She was & continues to be a very easy going child. My grandson was taught to sign at 2 after an illness thwarted his speech. He picked up on it quickly (thank God) as it would get very frustrated when we didn't know what he wanted. Now he can sign and the frustration, tears, etc. have all but ceased.

Great book. The spiral bound only covers 2/3 of the book leaving out the middle section so it is a little floppy when carried. I also suggest using the DVD that works with this book. 1 day shipping was great! Happy signing!

The teacher is OK but the book along with the DVD is better.Honestly, if I had to only learn from the teacher, I would know precious little. She is deaf and it is very hard for me and my fellow hearing students to understand her.I found another student to study with out of class. We both review the materials for each unit in this book on our own. Then we meet before class, after we have watched the relevant DVD portion on our own a few times, and go through the exercises together.You cannot learn ASL from a book even with a DVD.However, what you do learn can be corrected by someone who knows this language. Feedback is essential.Go to a deaf church service, work with a deaf person via skype, find someone who can give you feedback. It will really pay off.Some of the drawings in the book were a bit confusing. I found a book, Perigee Visual dictionary of signing, which details the signs and, best of all, gives mnemonics or memory aids to understand them and get them to stick.The more I go through the book, the more confusing the pictures are. If you Google ASL you will find several sites where the gestures are shown via free videos. Use them in conjunction with the book and DVD. I wonder how anyone can make sense of ASL solely from this book.There is no way to learn without practicing.Do a little each day. A little is worth a lot more than a lot infrequently.The book has exercises. Get to where you can comfortably express each sentence.Spend a little time reviewing the past lessons, learning new material and getting more familiar with ASL each day. It takes time so don't get discouraged at the beginning. This is a purely visual language and, for some,this may initially prove somewhat confusing.Do whatever you can do. That is enough even if you don't believe me!Be aware of how ASL expresses things. ASL does not equal English. It is a separate language and has its own grammar and syntax. This book will give you enough of this to get started.Above all, do not be too greedy in learning lots of stuff.Get to where you know the core vocabulary of signs. Use this over and over until it is second nature.Not even all deaf signers know all the signs.Learn finger spelling first of all. Then you can fingerspell whatever sign you don't know.Make sure you use facial expressions. Without them it is like you are speaking in a monotone; boring.Slowly, little by little, you will learn this wonderful, expressive language.

I received my book yesterday. After looking through it for an hour and studying the first pages, I learned how the book was written. Several learning aids are included in the pictures and once you study what the aids do, you realize how much thought went into this book. I intend on taking a formal class using this book. But until that time I am going to begin on my own so I have a head start. I have read reviews from people who say that the pictures are too hard to understand. They did not take the time to read the explanation for the pictures. This is a fine book and I cannot wait to get into it. It is my intention to become certified as an Interpreter and this book will give me a great start. This is a book for people who are serious about study, not those who want learning and understanding handed to them on a platter.

My daughter and I are taking an ASL class and this was the recommended book for the class. It is great with all of the pictures. Makes learning easier!
