Interesting look at how 2 Somali immigrants to Norway became radicalized and moved to Syria to live in the IS. The author (a former war correspondent) just presents the facts, adding little to no personal analysis as to why these particular girls, given every opportunity, gave themselves over to jihad. It’s a page-turning read that will, at times, leave you irritated by the parent’s futile attempts to deal with the situation, angered by the blatant abuse of the welfare system, and sad at the loss of two seemingly bright girls to a hellish world beyond their control.

This is the account of radicatlisation of two teenage sisters with Norwegian citizenship originally from Somaliland joining ISIS in Syria.The book gives an honest account regarding the development of the story but does not want to go into the explanation what attracted the girls to Islamic radicalism nor what propelled them out of Norway. So it's up to the reader to draw his/her own conclusions. Neither does the author explore the reaction of Norwegian institutions to radicalisation of its citizens which I missed a bit.

The idea of this book drew me in but after reading it a while I did not enjoy it because they never got the actual story from the girls. Too much speculation and retelling.

Some people might find this book to be interesting, but I found it to be horribly dull and had a hard time getting through it. He drones on and on about his inner struggle in going on the Hajj while being a (somewhat unbelieving) anthropologist and I found it to be redundant. I learned some interesting things about the pilgrimage through this book, but I think a lot of the theory was lost on me because I don't have much of a background in it--I would have much rather enjoyed a book which was less him and more experience. It might just have been that I found him to be annoying.

I'm writing this review knowing that I'm not going to do the book justice. The number one reason is that I'm far too removed from academia now and far too pressed for time to be able to follow closely and read and reread each passage. The second reason is that I read the first 141 pages more than a year before finishing the rest of the book.When I started reading the book, I was turned off by what I saw as the author's complaining about the endemic corruption of the developing world, similar to the WAWA (West Africa Wins Again) of U.S. travelogs in west Africa. The author's mentioning his disregard for ritual requirements and prohibitions and his lack of reverence for the blessing of Allah's invitation to His house pained me. And I just stopped reading the book.But from page 142 on, and I don't know if I'm imagining it, it was as if I was reading a totally different book. The participation in the rituals of ziyara, umra and hajj, no matter how "defective" the author's intention, changed the tone of the narrative. It was as if the magnitude of the crowds, the power of the stories the rituals reenacted, the landscape, the buildings, the sounds and the words of the Quran flooded over the dam of the author's preconceived research plan. But this flood was not destructive. Rather, the water initiated the germination of the seeds of Muslim identity lying in a soil enriched, not polluted, by the European-American discipline of anthropology.Now I may still be on a post Eid al-Fitr high, and I have to say just thinking about Makka is enough to make me cry (even this instant!)-May Allah azza wa jall invite us all there!-but I thought this author made me as a Muslim think about the hajj in ways I had not considered. And is there worship better than pondering Allah's signs in His messengers and His judgments?For the non-Muslim reader, I hope that the latter half of the book will bring attention to Islam as a religion rather than as a political movement.This book has by far the best description of the replacement and sacrifice of Ibrahim, Hajar and Ismail alayhim assalaam that I've read. In my brief Internet search, I came across a good article by Carol Delaney's Was Abraham Ethical? Should We Admire His Willingness to Sacrifice His Son? But Professor's Abdellah's discussion is at a whole other level.The book reminds me a lot of the only other "deep" anthropology book I've ever read, Paths Toward a Clearing by Michael Jackson. I have to read these kinds of books repeatedly to find their rhythm. If you have the time, it's well worth it.

In 1853, Sir Richard Francis Burton went on the pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca, and his wonderful account of his successful impersonation as a Muslim pilgrim is still an exciting book. There have been other non-Muslims and Muslims who have written about the travel, which is one of the five pillars of Islam (the others being profession of faith, prayer, fasting, and alms giving). All Muslims who are able are obligated to take the hajj once in their lives. There are few modern accounts of the pilgrimage, which has become commercialized and, for those who have the money, routine. Now there is a unique account, from Abdellah Hammoudi, a professor of anthropology at Princeton University, who determined that he would undertake the hajj in 1999 for the purpose of writing a book on anthropological aspects of his trip. Any pilgrim has a journey unlike any other pilgrim, but Hammoudi's effort, chronicled in _A Season in Mecca: Narrative of a Pilgrimage_ (Hill and Wang) is distinct. He is not a believer like his other fellow pilgrims, even the friends he goes with. "I am not contemptuous of religions; I believe that under certain conditions they allow for expression of major existential dilemmas and encourage reconciliation on a grand scale." He grew up in Morocco, and was raised as a Muslim, which he says he still is, but a secular one. And so his journey set up conflicts from the start that he analyzes scrupulously at length, and which never really become resolved: "I couldn't possibly be an observer plain and simple, whether hostile and distant or friendly and admiring of Islam." He also had constantly to analyze his own participation in the ritual; can anthropologists rightly study cultures in which they are themselves taking part? Can the hajj have any value if undertaken in a secular vein?These questions, and those having to do with the basic personal meaning of the hajj, will perhaps be less interesting for most readers than the stories of preparation and the travelogue of the journey, told with good humor in a readable translation from the French (by Pascale Ghazaleh). For instance, Hammoudi had to submit thirty passport-style photographs and six copies of his birth certificate. He had to fill out a file on himself, and had to enlist the help of someone who knew someone. Of course, just filling in the forms would not do; he had to give a sum of money to a government employee ("which we decided to call `alms'") in order to lubricate the process. Once he was fully registered, he could not simply pack up and go. He had to be trained into what he was about to undergo, for violation of minor rules would invalidate the hajj and make it as if he had never participated at all. There were constant conflicts with commerce. One of Hammoudi's fellow pilgrims even says that the hajj is "a merchants' conspiracy." There is an obsession with purchasing suitcases, suitcases that will hold other purchases that are brought back home from the hajj, souvenirs for those left behind. The commercial aspects of the hajj were only one of the disappointments Hammoudi had to face. He was continually confronted with the segregation from women, which is stricter in Saudi Arabia than in his Moroccan home. Pilgrims were eager to criticize others; one pious man pointed out, "Our neighbors prayed behind our women. Their prayer is invalid." Hammoudi is disgusted by those who declare themselves the ones who have an absolute right to interpret the prophet's words for others. He is dismayed by the obvious differences between Shiites and Sunnis and the Wahhabi brand of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia.It sounds a troublesome way to take a vacation, indeed. Hammoudi was, however, not just moved by the sad events that gives his narrative an overall "Ship of Fools" tone. There are surges of joy he describes, such as when he visits Mohammed's tomb. He describes the circling crowd at the Kaaba and being overcome with emotion and tears, and is willing to leave behind any negative lessons he has learned. "Now I understood the meaning of certain statements I had often heard: `What happiness to be here! How good God's grace is... What joy one feels at seeing all this!" Many of the pages of _A Season in Mecca_ have to do with an intellectual's attempts to come to an objective understanding of the many strange events which compose a hajj, but the subjectivity and ineffability of faith keep breaking through.

In fact, Coleman exemplifies the much sought-after trait of being brief and powerful. Since Jesus is the way, and therefore imitation of him is the way, then we all have to ask ourselves three questions:1. Have I been sufficiently trained to do these eight principles of Jesus?2. Am I personally doing each one of these eight principles on an ongoing basis? Note that it is not enough to merely agree with the principles of Jesus; we need to do them. That is true Christianity.3. Am I calling and training others to do these principles of Jesus?This is a personal assessment that all of us must make and reassess on an ongoing basis. Those who answer "yes," and whom God would agree to their "yes" on all three questions will be the mighty revolutionaries that will spread the good news all around the world, as part of the master's master plan of evangelism.

It quick and to the point. I started evangelising right after finishing the book. This knowledge has opened new doors in my life and others lives. Very helpful. But not everybody has the gift of evangelizing so don't beat yourself up if its not your bag ( don't know another way of say thing that; sorry). But this little book will make you want to get out of your cubicle little world and get the good news out there.

This little book is packed with helpful information about the approach Jesus took when making disciples. The method becomes more clear: first train the disciples and teach them to be obedient, and then show them how to go forth with power to do his work. The training seems to be focused on demonstrations of preaching the good news of salvation through faith in Christ, healing the sick, casting out devils, proclaiming deliverance to the captive, opening the eyes of the blind, and setting at liberty those who were oppressed. The training includes demonstrations, love, and constant guidance which results in the everlasting kingdom. An emphasis on close, personal guidance is an absolute must. Jesus worked with his disciples faithfully and patiently until, when the time was right, they were ultimately sent forth to tell the world about a redeeming love.

This takes the Gospel accounts and pulls out the strategy Jesus used to make disciples who would make disciples. It focuses only on the Gospels, which prevents it from gaining from the patterns in Acts and the Church growth methods that followed after Jesus left. These fit our present context more closely than did the context the disciples had with Jesus. It doesn't mean we can't transfer them to our setting, but I look forward to a study that weaves both together. For example, Paul and the apostles traveled from place to place making disciples, but never stayed 3 years with any of them. In most cases they stayed only a few days or weeks. They wrote letters and revisited, but again these were short trips. But they did have the apostles' teachings that they could leave with them.... like we do today and they had the Holy Spirit indwelling.

This isn't a book focused on evangelism methodology, so much as it is a philosophy of evangelism. The `master plan' (or `Master's plan') refers to the approach that our Lord himself took in choosing, training, and sending out the disciples to reach others.The plan breaks down into eight parts - choosing a few dedicated individuals, spending all (or much of) your time with them, insistence on holiness in life, pouring into them your own zeal for God and his purposes through the power of the Holy Spirit, modeling for them a life given to God (particularly in prayer, attention to scripture, and public ministry), sending them out to do specific ministry tasks, supervising them and keeping them accountable in those efforts, and teaching them to repeat the process themselves with new disciples.Coleman's exegesis is sound, and his emphasis on theology and philosophy over methodology is refreshing. There are a few odd missteps here and there (e.g. his comments on why the disciples were sent to `the lost sheep of Israel'), but overall this is a convicting and biblical volume on carrying the message of the kingdom.

After a litter of amish and pioneer subjects - Siri does not disappoint when it comes to historical fiction. And once more, her characters are multi-dimensional and interesting! They are not boring and predictable. Oh, Siri I could just HUG you for this book! Thank you!Clara is a bright, intelligent woman who dreams of going to Vassar College. She lives with her wealthy, but distant and somewhat mysterious father and prickly aunt - an ambitious and socially-driven woman who is determined to help her niece marry the "catch of the ton" - Franklin de Vries. Clara is socially-anxious and is constantly concerned with what she should do and say. A welcome relief to her circle is Harold de Vries, the congenial younger brother. Her lifelong friend, Lizzie, is also a lifeline to her in this foreign land of intrigues and alterior motives.The supporting characters are just as interesting! How did her father really earn his fortune? Were the de Vries really responsible for ruining the Carter fortune decades ago? Is a marriage between Franklin and Clara for revenge?My ONLY regret is that I finished this book in one day and now there is no more! Siri Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in Christian Fiction. These characters are fresh, the storyline is unique and ingenuitive. And Siri is a genius. Do yourself a favor. Buy DON'T BORROW this book. You'll want to read it again.

I have hundreds of books on my Kindle. Aaaand sometimes when I check books out at the library (as I did with this one) I don't realize that I already have it in my collection. So when I was about 3/4 of the way through with this book that I was enjoying so much, I looked on my Kindle to see if I had any other books by Siri Mitchell,and happy, happy, joy, joy, this very book was on it, which made me exceedingly happy because this will be a book I will read again and again.This is the first book I've read by this author and I was instantly hooked with the authors style. Perhaps this is also because it is written in first person (my favorite POV) and I don't often read many Christian historicals in first. I was fascinated by all her details about New York high society during the Gilded Age. The details were incorporated in such a humorous way through the eyes of the main character that I found myself chuckling at a lot at her blunders. The characters were fun, but the story is also tempered with a serious note and a Christian message: Does God love me just as I am? Because of some of the topics that are revealed and addressed, I would not recommend this to younger teens. It is a clean book and a sweet romance unfolds, but some of the themes might be best for older teens and adults.I'm checking out more of this author's books, and am happy to have this in my collection to be able to read again.

It was almost entirely about what balls they attended, what restaurant they went to, what opera they were seen at, and about what gowns they were wearing, what they ate, and conversations in between. Friendly competition for the heir seemed to be the only plot.I appreciate at the end all the things Clara learned and how she turned out . She grew up a lot, She gained wisdom and she faced many things that she needed to face. She turned into the woman she really needed to be and wanted to be.S

Phyllis Chesler, Ph.D, is an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women s Studies. She is the author of seventeen books, including the 20th century landmark feminist classics Women and Madness (1972);  Mothers on Trial: The Battle for Children and Custody (1986); and Sacred Bond: The Legacy of Baby M (1988). Her 21st century work includes The New Anti-Semitism (2003), The Death of Feminism (2005) and An American Bride in Kabul (2013), which won a National Jewish Book Award, and, in 2016, Living History: On the Front Lines for Israel and the Jews 2003-2015. Her work has been translated into many European languages and into Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Hebrew. Dr. Chesler is a co-founder of the Association for Women in Psychology (1969) and The National Women's Health Network (1974). She is a Shillman-Ginsburg Fellow at The Middle East Forum, a fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Anti-Semitism and Policy (ISGAP), and a founding member of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME), and currently a member of SPME s Council of Scholars. Since the Intifada of 2000, Dr. Chesler has focused on anti-Semitism and the demonization of Israel; the psychology of terrorism; the nature of propaganda and the importance of the cognitive war against fact and reason; honor-based violence and the rights of women, dissidents, and gays in the Islamic world. It is not always--or even often--possible to get a clear picture of an author's character and integrity from reading her work; there are plenty of brilliant, insightful and illuminating books penned by reprehensible cads. In "Islamic Gender Apartheid" however, Dr. Chesler's character and sense of honor shines through as brightly as her crystal clarity and laser-like focus. Her impatience with those who would muddy the waters of discourse with supine homage to political correctness made me want to cheer.I have generally identified as a man of the right but have never moved in lockstep with orthodox conservatism. As Dr. Chesler so eloquently establishes in her book, lockstep conformity--on the right or the left--is not only childish and unnecessary but profoundly destructive to social progress in a free market of ideas. I literally believe I am a clearer thinker having read this brilliant woman's book.

There is no voice I know of like the voice of Phyllis Chesler. First of all, it takes enormous moral stamina to visit the episodes of cruel discrimination against women that she documents here. Second, although many who learn of such incidents privately deplore and regret them, Chesler actually says what most of us only think. That in itself is an education. From reading her words, which say what we only think, we learn what honestly sounds like if only we dared to exhibit it ourselves. Personally I feel grateful for this book and for Phyllis Chesler's influence in the world. She's one of the heroes of our time.

As usual an important read from Dr Chesler. An academic that hasn’t given in to political correctness. This shows that all through the last 20 years she has been ahead on so many issues and especially gender apartheid in the Islam world. It is time for the politicians and the self proclaimed “activists” to listen.

Great Writing and Insightview of the fascianting but also highly repressive culture and fascinating account of perseverance and personal struggle in confinement

One of the best authors out there writing about the scourge of Islam and its war against all non-Muslims AND Muslim women. It's a shame that most feminists have abandoned actual women's rights if those women are Muslim. Instead, today's "feminists" (with the exception of Chesler, Paglia, and maybe a couple of others) rally about Leftist causes and ignore the actual plight of Muslim women trapped in Islamic countries or cultures. Women in Islamic countries (and elsewhere) are often the victims of honor killings, stonings, beatings, and are often unable to follow their own dreams and make their own choices. Highly recommend this book-- I hesitate saying I "enjoyed" it, because the subject matter isn't enjoyable. It was, however, well-written and fascinating to read.

This journalistic foray into the lives of women living under Islamic gender apartheid was powerful, illuminating, and eye-opening. A must-read for truth-seekers and independent thinkers who refused to go with the herd.A brutal account of the realities of Islamic gender apartheid that should be required reading at every college. Dr. Chesler provides years of frontline reporting, giving her readers glimpses into the personal stories and tragedies of countless women living in oppressive structures that both shock and provide clarity into eastern cultures.

Phyllis Chesler deserves praise for bringing greater awareness to this important topic.

This is a guide for patients considering fertility treatments written by a former fertility patient. Bianca Smith states 'this is everything I wish I had known before starting my fertility treatments.' The content is readable and supportive. Bianca reviews tips on trying to conceive naturally, tips for choosing a fertility clinic, IUI vs. IVF, and alternative treatment options. She includes some fertility friendly recipes and a lot of tips for self care through the roller coaster ride of treatments. Bianca's passion for helping others comes through in her writing - the book reads like she is your fertility coach. She stays positive but gets real and leaves you with tools and resources to help you through.

Bianca has put together a comprehensive look at the ins and outs of IVF treatment, from what different treatment options consist of to tips on managing the stress of the process from other IVF veterans. This is truly a guide that can prepare you physically and emotionally for IVF. She's obviously done extensive research, yet the book is written as if you were having a conversation with your best girlfriend. It's so easy to read and follow. I also like that it includes resources for more information on various aspects of IVF, including avenues for emotional support, which is so vital for patients on this journey. I didn't do IVF, and learned a lot from reading this guide at how extensive and intense it can be. I really appreciate Bianca for putting this book together! As a fertility coach, I'm sure I'll often consult this book as a reference as I work with clients who embark on the IVF path to build their families. I look forward to recommending this guide to clients to help them on their fertility journeys.

This book is a good summary of IVF. From procedures, info resources, medical resources and recommended blogs. The author makes wonderful recommendations based on her research and experience in (almost) bullet point format. Easy read packed with information an IVF patients-to-be must know.

I have been through one round of IVF and I wish I had this book prior. I found great information as I get ready for the next round. IVF is an emotional journey and this book makes it less overwhelming. Thanks Bianca!

I wish I would have had access to this resource before I decided to proceed with my IVF. I appreciate that this book not only has the practical information needed to make a decision, but it also has information from those that have already gone through the IVF process. I find it helpful to hear first hand what others have experienced versus only trusting what doctors and clinics tell you. Plus I love the mixture of facts, advice and other tips Bianca provided from fertility coaches, advocates, etc. There are so many things to consider when deciding on infertility treatment options. This IVF book provides so much valuable information in one place, so you can take your time and read what others have already researched for you. In the end it is such a personal decision and has to be right for you and your circumstance. But Bianca has taken the time to bring the overwhelming process into a condensed, concise resource.
