Billy had no memory of the event and they used hypnosis to recover the memories.The book describes the hypnosis session -- at which the author was present -- in quite a bit of detail. Unfortunately, the hypnotist (a trained certified clinical hypnotist) did a lot of things that are "no-no's" in memory recovery. I'm comparing to a Texas criminal court case appellate opinion in which hypnosis was used to get an accurate drawing of an armed robber, and also the book Scientific Report on the Search for Bridey Murphy, which discusses hypnosis in detail. Both went into detail about the problems that can arise in memory recovery (conflation and confabulation) if the hypnotist uses poor techniques.Hypnotized people are VERY susceptible to suggestion. Police trained to use hypnosis for memory recovery sit behind the subject so the subject can't see the questioner's body language, facial expressions, etc. They also speak in a fairly monotone voice, because vocal inflections can serve as keys. And most of all, NO leading questions!THIS hypnotist REPEATEDLY used VERY leading questions, e.g.:"[I see sheep in a field in Heaven].""Bill, do you see God?"... "What does He look like?"... "Is there a message from God? Is He speaking to you?"[Billy is talking with Jesus.]... "Can you ask Him if there's a purpose in your going back?"... "Will God or Jesus heal you now?"[Billy says he sees angels.]... "Are they your Guardian Angels, then? Are these three angels your guardians in life?"A major problem is that the use of these poor techniques leaves the book wide open to criticism that Bill may have unintentionally fabricated things in response to the suggestions of the hypnotist. I personally don't think he did, but that is a valid criticism that severely reduces the reliability of the "evidence".Also, the book has ALMOST NOTHING about heaven. Billy felt he was traveling through a tunnel several times, he saw Jesus but really only focused on his face and doesn't remember that well (he was 5). He saw angels and what he thinks were sheep but no other people or animals. There was lots of music. In one place the sky was rainbow COLORED, NOT an actual rainbow. That's pretty much it regarding heaven.I highly recommend the book My Time in Heaven by Richard Sigmund. Sigmund was dead for about 8 hours and his book has EXTENSIVE descriptions of heaven and there was no use of "memory recovery" techniques that are known to often produce distorted or false memories.

I lost my sister in September 2012. It helped me to know that we will meet again. She called out to my mom and brother. We lost our brother in 2011 and was so depressed and kept telling me it should have been her because she was the oldest child. Now I know my mom and brother was there to help her into heaven. Thank you for account of what happened to you. It has helped me with my understanding of what happens after we pass.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to understand more about the afterlife and the comforting facts that heaven is a real place and Jesus will one day be awaiting our return home. This book is very well written and easy to follow the journey of James Anderson and his brother. This is a must read.

It would have been best if I had followed the first review I read. There was very little information about Heaven, the Spirit World or what's on the other side. This is a story about two boys growing up and their family life and very little else. Sorry to be so critical, but I expected some real insight and came away with bits and pieces.

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929). After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history. The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989). Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. **Before I do my â€˜reviewâ€™ I have to say something re: the movie vs the book** wow..they really cut the movie in half to accommodate the story! In HS â€˜The Grapes of Wrathâ€™ next to â€˜Mice & Menâ€™ were required reading. Iâ€™m surprised I wasnâ€™t crying on a daily basis! I havenâ€™t read the novel since 1978, but always watched the movie..besides a couple of characters that didnâ€™t match the book theres the subject but no comparison...so if anyone has to do any required reading and â€˜Grapes of Wrathâ€™ is one..donâ€™t watch the movie first ðŸ˜ One more thing Dylan Baker is now my favorite narrator! (I listened as well, thank God?) What a performance..he sounded like â€˜Henry Fonda to the tee! Excellent narration!Now onto a few words about this exceptional novel. Since John Steinbeck always wrote books re: the Great Depression, he had an ability to understand their fear on a daily basis. If Steinbeck were alive today, his novels would probably be very close to how they were over 75 years ago.His books, especially â€˜Grapes of Wrathâ€™ dealt with racism, extreme poverty, family problems not far from the ones today. This novel was the perfect example.The descriptive words he used in explaining their hurt, their living environment , lack of housing, etc. was spot on. I closed my eyes listening & even sometimes reading because I wanted to be there, to try and understand what the Depression years were really like..they were not â€˜The Waltonâ€™sâ€™! This was real..not knowing what tomorrow would bring for themselves or their family.Iâ€™m so glad I decided to read and listen again...every single person must read â€˜The Grapes of Wrathâ€™ and realize at one time in the 20th Century individuals were living worse than dogs & cats...and unfortunately sometimes it doesnâ€™t sound too far from reality today.Iâ€™ve been honored to read a masterpiece!

This book has been called Steinbeck's masterpiece, and it's not hard to see why.The Grapes of Wrath is so completely, so guturally human that it's practically impossible not to become engrossed in the life stories of the main characters. Some have complained that the characters are flat, that there is little growth. I find this only partially true. There is much to read between the lines. One who reads closely can find much growth in the characters of Ma Joad, Rose of Sharon, Tom, and even Al. Then there is the former preacher, Casy, whose growth occurred before the Joads' story even began -- but Steinbeck offers glimpses of that growth in his stories to the Joads.This careful examination of the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the effects of corporatism and the ensuing expansion of poverty is insightful and heart-rending. Migrant farmers find themselves picking fruit and vegetables to sell for mere pennies a day, meanwhile they are unable to even feed their own families. They watch as corporate farms burn and destroy fruit and vegetables to keep the prices high and prevent the starving from stealing the "extra." They see acre upon acre of land go unused, but they cannot even plant a few carrots because it is owned by the banks and the migrants are charged with trespassing. The "Okies," as they are called, are treated worse than animals. Families break apart and the old, sick, or very young die of malnutrition and sickness. Meanwhile, the corporate farms and banks continue to put small farms out of business and scheme to keep prices high and wages low. The stark contrast can be seen in a corporate farm owner, decked out in gold chains, wryly offering work to the desperate Joads in the midst of a strike.I have heard it said that it is only in recent years that people are crying "class warfare." The Grapes of Wrath is a poignant example of class warfare before the term was even coined. This book is a time capsule of times passed -- and history will repeat itself if we don't learn from the lesson Steinbeck has to teach.

Canâ€™t wait to finish this! I saw the movie version when I was 12 and to this day(59yrs old) Grapes of Wrath continues to be one of the most impactful works in my life? Admittedly movie versions and the book are different but there is no value lost. For times sake I am utilizing Audible and doing some reading. The main narrator sounds similar to Henry Fonda! The story is gritty,at times sad, maybe depressing to some. But I find hope,honesty and resiliency and the strength of family as the main themes. The Depression and the dust bowl era affected that part of the country , for many their lives were changed forever but for many there was a rebirth and relocation that showed the strong spirit that carried them to the next chapter of their lives. A must read, if any have ever come from a background of poverty and having to fight and scrape for anything, you will feel the connection here.

This edition is fantastic with its detailed introduction to Steinbeck, the influences in his life which led him to writing this book, his struggles with other writings he didn't have published.....Too unfortunate that HS AP & Lit101 students couldn't have this well presented information a couple decades ago, when we were forced to read the book & regurgitate highfalutin claptrap.

This is not Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. What a waste of money

I've read it several times. A hauntingly, achingly, astonishingly graceful work deserving of the Pulitzer received as well as contributing to the later Nobel Steinbeck received for his work as a whole. The intercalary chapters are usually long prose poems which lucidly describe characters and their times. Anyone who researches the history of that time and the locales knows the veracity and honesty of the book. A novel, yes but so much more. It is an in-depth symphony depicting circumstances, thoughts, emotions, and actions of the Joad family and those whom they meet in their long westward journey. It is Exodus, and a 20th century re-enactment of our American pioneer ancestors as they had moved west earlier.The story is one of the more profound stories you will ever read! Too bad there only five stars available to rate it as it deserves ten!

I found this book very helpful. I already was seeing a correlation between possible food sensitivities and my daughter's behavior. Dr. Block's book cemented what I had already suspected and gave me some further "food for thought". I did not find her first pages, recounting her horror story with doctors, irrelevent. As one who has also been mistreated by doctors, I understand! Plus, it gives you an idea of "who is this lady, and if she's a doctor, how is she any different?" She shows how her own experience led her to medical school to help her daughter, and now other children. Her ending words are that every parent shouldn't have to go to medical school to help his/her child!I appreciate all she shared and wished I lived closer to take my daughter to her center! But I feel she gives enough help to start you on the trail to help yourself and your child. What she shares, I don't believe, are half-truths or distorted---anyone who is considering Ritalin should read this FIRST, and those whose precious children are on it should read it as well. There IS hope! If you have doubts, ask yourself why many (if not all) ADHD diagnoses are made with NO medical examination at all? Why no consideration for learning styles? It's time for parents to take control of their children and not just hand them over (or be coerced!) to be drugged into compliance. I am already seeing improvements in my daughter, even though I've just started making changes!Great book and easy to read!

In Chapter 3, Peter Meyers and Shann Nix acknowledge their appreciation of Chip and Dan Heath and especially of what the Heaths share in their masterwork, Made to Stick. I share their high regard for this book and its co-authors. That book and As We Speak complement each other almost seamlessly. For example, the Heaths provide a brilliant explanation of the "what" and "why" of stickiness whereas Meyers and Vann provide an equally brilliant explanation of the "how" as well as why what they recommend is so effective.Here in a single volume is just about all you need to know about high-impact communication, especially after checking out the Heaths' book and reviewing the Six Principles that all sticky ideas demonstrate. I found many of the techniques were ones I already used in my writing and my speaking. It was great to have some new slants on these techniques that I might incorporate into future presentations to maximize my effectiveness. Then there was new information that I have already begun to use and have found the results to be absolutely in line with the expectations set by the authors. this is down to earth writing, accessible by anyone who needs to communicate with others in business or in your personal life. I recommend this book for all public speakers. The book contains suggestions for writing, rehearsal and delivery. It is written not for preachers but for any public speaker and is oriented toward professional business people in the corporate world. It positively changed the way I prepare and deliver sermon. I only wish I had this book 20 years. It would have made my life easier and my ministry more effective.

This book contains some great points, but often gets mired down in its own sense of self-importance if that makes sense; it simply drags in places. Of course, that is probably unavoidable given the material, which is fascinating but not necessarily fresh, new or unfamiliar. This book is mostly good though, and has improved my communication with my employees significantly.
