I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

Has a lot of annoying editing errors, some of which look to be on-purpose (trolling?). For example, after a certain delicate passage, the word "laugh" is stuck in, making me think some passive-aggressive underpaid teenagers were doing the transcription.Also some nonsensical garbage, and I'm not very far along in it yet. I find this kind of thing disturbing, so little respect for books/literature, even a Holy Book, wow. I guess that explains the low price.That said, it reads properly on my Kindle 4gen, and I'm glad there is at least a basic table of contents.I'm just reading it book-style (not researching passages/verses etc).OK value, but I wish it had been treated with more respect, even just as a book, you know?

Excellent. I can carry it around with a lot of other ebooks in my kindle. It also saves wear and tear on my very old hard book copy. This is a joint effort of ALL U.S. rabbis to translate the Jewish Bible (Old Testament to Christians) from Hebrew to English in the early 20th century. This is the final version. It has been reprinted many times but not changed. Where rabbis disagreed on translation, it is footnoted and cited. There is no commentary nor is anyone with an agenda trying to influence or change the meaning. This is THE only translation to be trusted. I have introduced many Christian friends to it, including the retired principal of the Christian Academy here, and they love it, too. It would get 5 stars if not for the many typo errors (by the 21st centuries spelling dimwits converting it to an ebook, not the original translators or printer). Occasionally the errors are bad enough that I have to pull the book out to grasp the meaning. For that reason only I recommend the hard book over this.

I guess I didn't read the description carefully - I thought it was going to be in Hebrew or something - it didn't say it was interlinear, but I was hoping. It's an English translation of the Old Testament from the Masoretic text, which is my favorite. It is interesting how it's set up into sections; Genesis through Ezek., then Hosea thru Malachi, then Psalms & Proverbs, Job, Song of S.,Ruth, Lam.,Eccl.,Esther, Dan.,Ezra, Neh.,1&2 Chron. It seems to have good navigational tools. If you want Hebrew, there is a Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) + the Comprehensive Biblical Hebrew and aramaic Glossary. So far i haven't found it as satisfying as Mysword KJV with the easy click on Strong's numbers.

It is good to have a clear Chumash on hand! The translation is one that I know, so no thinking about it is needed.

this is the Good book of all good books. Life is fragile know your commandments and handle with prayer.

The 1917 JPS Edition seems far more accurate and thought provoking than their later editions. The kindle option is a bit more difficult to navigate than a hard copy but the hard copies are expensive and not easy to acquire.

Nightbooks is a great introduction to spooktacular stories!It was filled with fantastic snippets of fairy tales, new scary stories and really great characters.

loved book could not put it down, read it in one day!

When I looked at the blurbs for this book I got the impression that it would end up as a sort of scary story anthology loosely held together by a Scheherazade frame. I was wrong. This is much more interesting than only that, in terms of being a fully realized tale, and while it's somewhat predictable it ends up being more like a clever and engaging improvisation on Hansel and Gretel.MILD PREMISE SPOILER. Our hero, Alex, has drawn the attention of his teachers and school counselor because he loves writing creepy, scary short stories. The kind with grim reapers, death portents, ghosts and ghouls, and the like. Alex thinks of himself as just a budding writer with a taste for the macabre, but he is a little worried that he might be on a path to actually becoming the weirdo his teachers suspect he is. Isn't that an interesting take on being the school outsider? Anyway, just as Alex resolves to change his ways he is captured by an actual witch, and figures out that he can only survive his captivity by providing his witch captor with a new scary story every night. (She's used up every other printed scary story, and she craves novelty.) So, the irony of now having to write scary stories after having just resolved not to is not lost on either Alex or the reader. It is Alex's struggle to figure out who he is and what he wants, and whether to give himself up as a writer to his muse, (and how to write stories under a very literal deadline), that adds punch and an interesting underlying tone to the adventure.That aside, the book has a number of strong suits. White can create an atmosphere of creepy dread with the best of them, (see his "Thickety" books), and he shows that off right in the first chapter as he creates the scariest and creepiest fourth floor in the history of New York City apartment buildings. (Well, not "Rosemary's Baby" creepy, but you get the idea.) The same can be said for the witch's lair, which exists somewhere outside of reality. The witch is sort of a modern witch, but drifts seamlessly from old school witchiness to internet savvy witchiness, which is handled with great style. On top of that, of course, is Alex's attempts to escape. There is suspense here and clever world building and plotting. Eventually the book has to commit to resolving that major point, and so it becomes at the end a fantasy/adventure/escape fairy tale, but that's fine because everything has to wrap up somehow.As to those scary tales, we only hear a few of them and they're pretty brief. This is not at all an anthology of scary stories and, to me, the scary stories were the least interesting part of the book. I suspect young readers will like them, but they end being more like chapter breaks rather than central to the book.What is central to the book is Alex's growth as a person, as a writer, and as a confident actor. The other person trapped in the lair, Yasmin, becomes an important character as she and Alex bond, and strong themes of friendship and loyalty are developed as part of that development. Yasmin is also deadpan funny in a tough girl fashion, so she adds spice and energy to the project.The upshot is that this is a more ambitious and accomplished book than it first appears. It may be aimed a bit younger than the "Thickety" series, but it is well done and offers a young reader a bit of a thrill, a call out to old school fairy tale witches, and some interesting character themes to think about. That struck me as a nice combination.(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

The story centers around a young boy named Alex who finds himself lured into a witch's lair (currently masquerading as an apartment) and is subsequently trapped, forced to write and read the witch scary stories every night. This premise hooked me immediately because it has a storytelling aspect much in the vein of Scheherazade, the fairy tale influence of fairy tales, and that dark, quirky undertone that you can readily find in middle grade books like Coraline and other slightly darker middle grade fantasy books.Nightbooks really comes through in the scary story department, not so much through the frame story, but within Alex's own stories and a few additional surprising elements throughout the book. When Alex reads his stories to the witch, the reader also gets to read and experience them. I don't generally enjoy reading stories or documents within a book, but I genuinely enjoyed reading all of Alex's short scary stories. They were perfectly creepy in ways that were appropriate for kids, but also still unsettling enough for adults such as myself to enjoy them. There is also a wide variety of surprises in this book that kept me entertained and guessing at every corner.Alex is an intriguing character. In a lot of ways, Alex is very similar to many other middle grade characters I've read, but there were definitely some things that set him apart in positive ways as well. His interest in the dark and scary side of movies and entertainment was one of them, and I really liked that White made his interest such a prominent role and example of it. I thought White did a wonderful job of showcasing that it's okay for kids to be interested in scary movies and monsters and that it doesn't make them "weird" for following their personal interests. I also liked seeing Alex's character grow, including how his insecurity grew into something more confident and sure as the story progressed.The only problems I had with this book are actually hard to put my finger on. There were moments where the narrative just felt a bit lacking and some scenes acted as fillers instead of substantive. I was also a little thrown by how easily Alex felt comfortable at the apartment at times and almost looked forward to having her listen to his stories. I also found the witch a little lackluster; she's supposed to be scary and powerful--and she certainly does seem powerful--but I really didn't find her all that intimidating and it was hard for me to understand the fear that Alex and another character he meets, Yasmine, had at times. Despite these issues, it's still a strong and enjoyable story that I'd recommend to any kid or adult who tends to like scary stories and movies--and who is always ready for a good story.Overall, Nightbooks is another success from J.A. White! I really can't wait to see what he writes next.

My 8 year old son would give this 5 stars but I deducted a star because it stalled in places and I think it’s too dark for the ages listed. Alex is a kid who likes the darker side of things until he finds himself trapped by a real witch. The only thing keeping the witch from killing him is that he writes really scary stories. In an ode to One Thousand and One Arabian Nights he has to tell the witch Natacha a new story everyday. There is another girl, Yasmin, who has been captive even longer and is very wary of Alex. The witch has a cat Lenore who also spies on the children. My son’s favorite parts were the stories that Alex would tell the witch. Those stories were actually much better written than the book itself but very dark. I mean DARK. Like children dying or being possessed dark. My son enjoys scarier stories but this is not a book for a sensitive child. The actual story is nowhere near as dark as the stories within the book. Alex is trying to escape and get back home. Along the way we will get to the background of Yasmin and Natacha. For me the plotting was on the slower side at times but overall a story that I didn’t mind reading to my son. Except for the gross bug chapter. There is one chapter on the horticulture of magic plants that went awry that goes on far too long.

This is an excellent resource for Chaplains and Chaplain's Aids. It gives variety to the Scout's own services and helps to promote true interfaith worship.

As a Scout Chaplain and instructor it is very good. It has been put to use and it will be one of my anchor text in my classes

From the daily task of heading the tiny kitchen at Joe Beef ten years ago he now mostly cooks ingredients that don’t touch one another for three adorable yet very talkative offspring, Henry, Ivan, and Eleanor. He does sometimes cook overly complex and poorly budgeted, ambitious, classic French meals at home for his wife, Allison. His life is still ruled by brief but intense bouts of diverse endeavors that somehow all come back to restaurants and cooking, be they gardening, trying to fly-fish in Alaska, preparing very large first-aid kits, or building bread ovens. In recent years, he casually alternated between yoga and drinking with an elegance rivaled only by the likes of Beau Brummell and Little Lord Fauntleroy.David McMillan is the co-owner/chef of Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Vin Papillon, Mon Lapin and McKiernan as well as partner in Les Vins Dame-Jeanne wine agency. Born and raised in Quebec City, David has been involved in Montreal’s restaurants since the age of seventeen and continues to explore, teach, and be fascinated by unique traditional French country cooking. David is father to his three daughters, Dylan, Lola, and Cecile, whom he loves, and when not found at any of the three restaurants on the Little Burgundy block, he’s at his Barkmere cottage.  Meredith Erickson has co-authored The Art of Living According to Joe Beef, Le Pigeon, Olympia Provisions, Kristen Kish Cooking, and Claridge’s: The Cookbook. She is currently working on her own book, Alpine Cooking, and on The Frasca Cookbook. She has written for The New York Times, Elle, Saveur, Condé Nast Traveler, and Lucky Peach. When not traveling, she can be found in Montreal, Quebec (with friends and family at Joe Beef).

This is a most awesome cookbook. I bought the original Joe Beef and had to have the second. I have tried several recipes already and they are wonderful. This book makes me want to go to Montreal and experience the restaurant first hand. It is a must have cookbook.

I was incredibly impressed with this book. The photos are amazing and the book is very well made. The price point was excellent. I bought this for a friend who loves food and cooking. He opened it right up to Lobster Sausage and started running around the office yelling "I'M GONNA MAKE LOBSTER SAUSAGE!".10 out of 10 would buy again.

My husband is a chef and he’s obsessed. He carries it everywhere and reads all the stories during his commute. We’ve yet to make anything from the book but that’s the point it’s not just a cookbook.

If you liked the first Joe Beef cookbook, you'll like this one. Great to have both. And this one has soup recipies!
