One of the best travel books I've found, produced with a designer's sensibility and gestalten's quality. The writing is sparse but rich, and the photos are stunning. The travelogue is candid, filled with accounts of good times and bad, from camping on Thai beaches to icy mountain passes, and from days of loneliness to the sensory overload of India. If you've ever dreamt of exploring the world with little more than a bike and a tent, this book is for you.
Biking through an entire continent, dealing with adversity, altitude, terrain, weather... that on it's own is a very hard and impressive accomplishment. But to be able to take a reader through it is and captivate your audience, is a total different level. I'm not a cyclist and I LOVE the book!
I love the adventure & photos in this book.
This is hard core, tough road, remote places bicycle travel captured by the author with camera and notes on paper and laptop (when it was working). There is a lot of minutae in this amazing road trip having to deal with visas, getting along in a remote "stan" country where you do not understand the language, making bicycle repairs, dealing with unexpected danger, and all of the lessons learned by the author. His experience might well benefit the ambitious reader who likes to travel alone into the void.Doolard's photographs capture the essence of what it is like to wake up in your tent and not see a building or another person for miles and miles of open vistas. Then again, he rides jam packed city streets in places like Kolkota, India and Istanbul, Turkey and he shoots photos of the small stuff as well. He takes captivating photos of people he encounters on crowded streets. He captures images of this or that he sees along the road. This was a solo trip although he did meet other cyclists on the road and rode together for days here and there. He also met and stayed with total strangers with whom he shared no language. Being Dutch, he had a grasp of the more common languages, but when in Kyrgyzstan, he met people who had never spoken to a foreigner at all. The author shares his "kit" or travel gear in detail which can be helpful if you are contemplating a long road trip to remote areas of the world. While some photos are a little blurry or discolored, no matter. They remind me of shooting with my 1956 Zeiss Ikon 35mm. the photos have an edgy feel and the shortfall in professional level perfection only makes them more appealing. The author was not after "calendar shots". He wanted to convey a sense of the place he was captivated by. And, yes, he has some scary encounters and some pleasurable times as well. A great book for the armchair adventurer or for the seasoned traveler. But, if you are a tourist and lack experience in tasting everything local in the most out of the way places and taking rough living in stride, this book may be for you. One leg of the trip was by commercial air. Buses, trains and hitchhiking were employed when it was the wise choice given the terrain and some high risk areas. He makes no excuse for using common sense.
This book is all about the photos. It's a massive book, with lots of double page pictures. Unfortunately, most of them have been digitally wrecked. Well, I assume they are, because it's unlikely that during the printing process some colours did run out and nobody noticed. The pictures look like the first colour photos of the 50es who have been left in the sun ever since to have some colours bleach out. The title image of the book already gives you a hint of what to expect, and the author's website has more of it. Unfortunately, I didn't check it before ordering. If you like underexposed pictures with not much colour except the greenish skies, this book is for you - I'll return it.
