On the very first day I began reading this book I was in a meeting where someone asked me for examples of significant trends businesses and employees needed to have in mind for now and the future. I basically recounted the first chapter of this book and then referred the asker to it. This is a well-researched and actionable glimpse of what the future of work looks like and a must read for anyone who is looking to stay ahead of the curve.

....only the future is here. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a friend of the author as we started writing career books for new grads back when Alex wrote the excellent "They Don't Teach Corporate in College". And in all this time - over a decade now! - I've watched as Alex has caught on to one workforce trend after another with precision, wisdom, and heart. I recommend Humanity Works to anyone who wants to know how to build better teams and shift your culture in a workforce where the old rules of power no longer apply.

Like you, I can share all sorts of anecdotes about how technology has modified my functions and tasks in the workplace in the last 10-15 years alone. A great example: documents and materials that were pieces of evidence to be used in litigation used to be produced by photocopy machines in which dozens if not hundreds of banker's boxes would be filled with sheets of photocopies of the original files. It was not uncommon at the time to task several junior personnel to spend weeks in a typically windowless-room going through those documents to identify relevant materials. Today, that process has been mechanized into ediscovery databases that allow for complex search strings that account for the source document type, date, and whether it was an attachment to an email. What previously took weeks or months by several humans now takes seconds by computers. How lucky we are that technology has allowed us to mechanize those mundane tasks! The junior personnel once stuck in a room for weeks trying to find anything remotely useful are now tasked with replicating, modeling, and adjusting complex models in formula-linked Excel spreadsheets and presenting those findings to their supervisors.Such anecdotes fill me with both amusement and awe: I marvel that technology has so powerfully transformed a mundane, slow process into an instant click of a few buttons. But I also have a vague notion that much of what seasoned professionals like myself do in our day-to-day jobs could one day be mechanized by machines. After all, those machines lack the "human error" factor innate to all of us.Levit's book allows us to think critically about the ways in which our uniquely human qualities will keep ourselves, our children and grandchildren employed with rich, meaningful, important work, even as the computers take over many of the tasks currently conducted by humans. For example, as we nurture our children to pursue STEM fields, we ought to also make sure that they are strengthening their empathy, collaboration, creativity, judgement, and leadership. These human traits, Levit argues, will be central to our success in the future workplace.Insightful, well-researched and an enjoyable read, this is an instructive book with an overall optimistic outlook. "Humanity Works" helps us address fears about the future workplace and strategically plan today for the changes that we expect will occur tomorrow (but in fact are already present in our lives).Highly recommended, especially as a graduation gift or for anyone with a new job or position.

It's no longer a luxury for companies to think about the future of work - it's now a necessity. If you, and your organization, want to be agile, innovative, and at the edge of trends in automation or even AI, read Alexandra Levit's fantastic book. I love her ability to blend cutting-edge research and evocative case studies with advice that is as relevant to these times we live as it is specific and practical.

Humanity Works is a powerful, clear-headed survival guide for understanding the future of work. If you're wondering how to integrate people, technology and change, Alexandra Levit provides the most understandable and actionable answers. My favorite sections are on how leaders can out-think bias and shortsightedness, harnessing women’s strengths in particular. A great buy.

The robots are coming! What should we do?!Become aware of the coming changes and prepare to make the most of them by ramping up the *humanity* in the human workforce. Leaders who are determined to succeed in the years to come should read this book by Alexandra Levit and learn how to make the most of the vast opportunities that our future presents for those who know how to harness them.

It seems that recently every other article has been focused on bots, AI, and advances in technology. After reading each one, I continue to wonder how this will impact our workforce. How will teams work together, what skills will we need, and how can organizations prepare for these changes? Humanity Works tackles a broad range of topics and provides practical questions and advice to address the workplace of the future. A must-read for technology and people professionals alike!

This book is chockful of important data and research about how the workforce and world has changed and will changed. Although the data alone is dizzying, Alexandra Levit doesn't leave you there. She brilliantly provides insights and observations to help you charge ahead in a new world whether you are the employee or employer. This is a necessary guide for succeeding in today's and tomorrow's workforce!

enjoyed reading account of author's family history, good read!

This is the stuff of magic.

Absolutely wonderful stories about Newfoundland. However, the Kindle text was marred by many errors.

Although I have not read "Baltimore's Mansion" yet I really enjoy Wayne Johnston's books. I'd bet anything that he would appreciate if his name was spelled Johnston rather than Johnson.

While true the period of time of "remaining righteous" may be finite, it needn't be necessarily short. In the case of the Johnston Family the third of that generation deals with the consequences to this day. "Baltimore's Mansion" is both true Family History together with the autobiographical experience of the Author. He may not have witnessed all he memorializes, but the feeling you get while reading is that if there is a line between the two it is seamless. And that this is true is due to the Author's insight into the memories of others he experiences as opposed to the memories that are his own.The prose of this book is rich it is thick and dense. I intend that comment in only the most positive manner. There is nothing extraneous as you read, every sentence is important; this book is as long as it needs to be, no more or no less. I always had the impression the Author chose each word or phrase he wrote carefully and with purpose. The writing needs no embellishment it is precise and honest. The book is about change, about change that is often not wanted, about progress that is anything but, rather it is a series of events that strips away a people's identity, the ground their homes are built upon, the jobs they have known for generations, and ultimately the Families themselves. The damage and dislocation that is suffered that is external is magnified by secrets and thought kept hidden for decades that if shared would have changed the lives of these Families. The book is about regret, missed opportunities, and an unwillingness to accept change that goes beyond simply sad to truly painful and destructive.I recently read "No Great Mischief" and while no 2 Authors are alike, I believe if you have read and enjoyed either you will enjoy them both.Whether describing an event that will change the course of a people, or of a young man sweeping away the imprints of horseshoes that do not bear his Father's mark (a Rose), the Author shows with great clarity the similarities and the futility of going against the tide.As to those who were on the "Winning" side as always the Author states it best, "We won, we won and nothing you can say can change that fact, and nothing makes victory sweeter than the enduring bitterness of men like you." The man being referred to here is the Author's Father.Wonderful book.

There is a dramatic nostalgia to this memoir that becomes overbearing by the end but is enticing and rich at the beginning. Johnston recounts the history of Newfoundlands confederation and how powerful an effect it had on his family. What becomes clear in the reading is how powerful (or how imagined) the pull of place can be. Johnston's father and grandfather are very immersed in their location but not just geographically but what it means to them spiritually or physically. And, yet, the grandfather apparently votes against Newfoundland remaining its own country and disappoints his son so powerfully that the son carries this disappointment with him and passes it on the author himself. What I find difficult in these books is the sense that the characters can't move on. Isn't there a moment when people can no longer hold onto that which was or that which they wished were? Apparently not.Baltimore, the title of the book, refers to one of the first settlers to the area who arrived in the 17th century, weathered one winter and fled after most of his group died, largely as a result of the horrific winters. Clearly Newfoundland is not a warm and welcoming place, but that doesn't matter and that's what the author does such a good job conveying."

Any book that can make a reader who hales from the land of pleasant living (i.e., the mid-Atlantic region of the United States) seriously consider spending a winter in Newfoundland is clearly worth reading. Wayne Johnston once again manages to turn what most of us would consider a very dull subject (growing up in Newfoundland) into a minor masterpiece. If you enjoyed "Colony of Unrequited Dreams," you will be equally charmed, intrigued and entranced by "Baltimore's Mansion" but in a more personal -- and, perhaps, more meaningful -- way. I expect that if Mr. Johnston were from the USA, his books would stay at the top of the best seller lists. As it is, he remains a bit of a hidden treasure. Perhaps "Baltimore's Mansion" will help change the situation.

Being from the other side of the confederation with Canada event (my family was pro-confederation), I found Johnson's memoir a real eyeopener to the sense of defeat and angst found in the loss of Newfoundland's precarious nationhood. The political subtext amplifies the family melodrama of loss and defeat. Although a bit too `Irish' for my taste in Newfoundland set stories, the writing is profound and the best in the english language currently being turned out these days. Johnson's family were smiths with iron and his writing is the same; that is, he turns the raw iron of language into something minimal, economical and heavy that carries the weight and experience of generations. Like the anchors, nails, and iron shoes, Johnson's writing will stand the test of time's weathering I'm sure.

#12,185 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Me and two of my friends (Natalia and Sarah) decided to use this book for our book club because we're in the fifth grade like Brianna. We wanted to experience her fifth grade year to see if we could have a race for president of the whole fifth grade but unfortunately we can't because student council already has president of the whole elementary and that person has to be in fifth grade. So since we couldn't have a race I cheered Brianna on through out her battle against Jasmine moon . And as long as Brianna competed she never gave up on her winning against Jasmine moon and she always had the courage to do what others wouldn't. So that's why I LOVE this book soo much! The author who wrote this book is one smart woman and I LOVE her work. She is the most inspiring author I have ever liked. She's #1 and so is another fantastic writer named Meg Cabot and they are my inspiration to read more and more books by them and famous authors. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVEZ! :) #1 I LOVE IT!

A master piece. I absolutely loved this book and will be recommending it to everyone I know. It kept my attention. I didn't want to put it down.If the second series "President of The Whole 6th Grade" is anything like this one...I know I will be pleased. Thank you

Gave to a friend's daughter for her birthday. He said she couldn't put it down.

There is plenty in this book that I found to like. It features an ambitious African American girl who sets no limitations on her future. Those ambitions are not superficial things like being a movie star or pop star, or hoping to marry her favorite movie/pop star. Not only does she have serious entrepreneurial aspirations but also practical plans for how to begin moving towards them. It starts with becoming President of her grade at school. Enter a conniving rival who is willing to stoop as low as necessary to throw a monkey wrench in these plans. Enter an ally who encourages her to put ambition ahead of ethics. Eventually Brianna learns that ambition is as noble as the path one takes to to make their dreams come true. If success comes at the expense of losing loyal friends and losing respect for yourself, can it be considered true success? I applaud the message of this story but feel that the execution could have been a little tighter. There was also one too many easily found "deep dark secrets" lying around for convenient plot machination. I'm not the intended audience of this book though. My 8 year old daughter loved it from beginning to end. There's much to be said for satisfying your target reader above and beyond anyone else.

Such a great book. I read the book as well so that my daughter and I could talk about the contents and the characters. She loved the book and so did I!

My grand daughter is a junior in high school and she still loves this book. I decided to pass on the reading to four more fifth graders. They will enjoy the reading

Great book, my grand daughter is going into 5th grade, it was her promotion gift 😀

My favorite book so far! The characters come alive.

The Colossus of New York: A City in 13 Parts, by Colson Whitehead

From Publishers Weekly

Whitehead (The Intuitionist; John Henry Days) lays out a wildly creative view of New York City. To out-of-towners, Gotham is about famous places, but Whitehead's New York is not. It's more about a way of seeing. For example, "No matter how long you have been here, you are a New Yorker the first time you say, That used to be Munsey's, or That used to be the Tic Toc Lounge... when what was there before is more real and solid than what is here now." Whitehead begins with the bus ride into Port Authority, complete with impossibly heavy baggage, bathrooms braved by only the desperate and the seating strategies of experienced bus riders. He cuts to city feelings: the morning's garbage truck noises; the problem of rain; coping with rush hour. When he does write of celebrated places-Central Park, Coney Island, the Brooklyn Bridge-it's for the role they play in our ritual life: when we go, how we are when we're there and how it feels to leave. Whitehead is a master of the minutiae of the mundane. He takes you to the moment of a subway train leaving without you: could you have made it if you'd left a few seconds earlier? Should you take a taxi? You check the tunnel for the next train, fusing with thoughts of time as new passengers accumulate on the platform. This 13-part lyric symphony is like E.B. White's Here Is New York set to the beat of Ellington or Cage.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Lovers of adventurous literary fiction relished Whitehead's novels, The Intuitionist (1998) and John Henry Days (2001), recognizing him as an original, sardonic, yet compassionate writer. Anointed with a MacArthur "genius" grant, Whitehead now presents a ravishing cycle of imaginative and evocative prose poems in tribute to his home, New York City, the quintessential metropolis of dreams. Writing in short, emphatic sentences, Whitehead riffs poignantly and playfully on myriad strategies for urban survival as he incisively distills the kaleidoscopic frenzy of the city into startlingly vital metaphors and cartoon-crisp analogies. Intensely sensory in his details, wistful and funny in his psychological disclosures, he makes everything come to mythic life, from the fury of rush hour to the strained etiquette of subway riders to Central Park, Times Square, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The mad choreography a rainstorm puts into motion, the rituals of downtown nightclubs, the horrors of the 9-to-5 routine, the waxing and waning of the self against the backdrop of so many other souls are all given a sharp, metaphysical twist in Whitehead's gorgeous rendering of New York as a colossal, ever-metamorphosing phantasm. This little sort of tone poem captures some of the beauty and some of the meanness of New York life. I didn't come away from THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK as being negative toward the city, but even if Mr. Whitehead were, we New Yorkers need our cranks and curmudgeons. It makes us part of who we are, after all.The free style works MOST of the time. When it doesn't, it really doesn't. (It is no coincidence that the most straight-forward section, the introduction, is the most superb!) THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK doesn't have the lyricism of E.B. White's THIS IS NEW YORK, but it doesn't pretend to want to be like it, anyway. Colson Whitehead's piece is more like Whitman's poetry, as he rambled along the old downtown streets and piers, and recorded his scenes and his feelings about them. Yes, this book could have been greater, but it doesn't take away from the power much of it has. So if you're looking for a history of or guidebook to New York City, this is not the book. But if you're looking for the evocative power of New York, written in a personal, lyrical style, you won't find many better than THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK.

Some great writing here, but not all. Some truly great passages/chapters and some duds. For a better example of Whitehead's power, read Underground Railroad.

I felt as though I was reading a series of poems. His writing is so descriptive and beautiful.

Such style, such energy, such love, such fun. Thank you Mr. Whitehead. Definitely on my gift lists.

This short work captures in beautifully evocative language the moods amd nuances of daily life in New York City. It is a book that expresses so accurately the feelings that I personally experience in New York that I wish this is the book I had written. Thankfully Colson Whitehead has put these observations and feelings into words and expressed them for all New Yorkers in spirit to savor and reflect on again and again. A wonderful book for current residents, transplanted natives (like me) and visitors who want to get inside the pulse of the greatest city on the planet.

Great book, fine condition.

Wow a critical read to grasping not truly understanding NYC. This book speaks to you no wonder it's summer reading for NYU ....welcome to the Big Apple.

had to read this for college, very intersting! very relatable if you've lived in NYC for a while.

#220,447 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

One of the best travel books I've found, produced with a designer's sensibility and gestalten's quality. The writing is sparse but rich, and the photos are stunning. The travelogue is candid, filled with accounts of good times and bad, from camping on Thai beaches to icy mountain passes, and from days of loneliness to the sensory overload of India. If you've ever dreamt of exploring the world with little more than a bike and a tent, this book is for you.

Biking through an entire continent, dealing with adversity, altitude, terrain, weather... that on it's own is a very hard and impressive accomplishment. But to be able to take a reader through it is and captivate your audience, is a total different level. I'm not a cyclist and I LOVE the book!

I love the adventure & photos in this book.

This is hard core, tough road, remote places bicycle travel captured by the author with camera and notes on paper and laptop (when it was working). There is a lot of minutae in this amazing road trip having to deal with visas, getting along in a remote "stan" country where you do not understand the language, making bicycle repairs, dealing with unexpected danger, and all of the lessons learned by the author. His experience might well benefit the ambitious reader who likes to travel alone into the void.Doolard's photographs capture the essence of what it is like to wake up in your tent and not see a building or another person for miles and miles of open vistas. Then again, he rides jam packed city streets in places like Kolkota, India and Istanbul, Turkey and he shoots photos of the small stuff as well. He takes captivating photos of people he encounters on crowded streets. He captures images of this or that he sees along the road. This was a solo trip although he did meet other cyclists on the road and rode together for days here and there. He also met and stayed with total strangers with whom he shared no language. Being Dutch, he had a grasp of the more common languages, but when in Kyrgyzstan, he met people who had never spoken to a foreigner at all. The author shares his "kit" or travel gear in detail which can be helpful if you are contemplating a long road trip to remote areas of the world. While some photos are a little blurry or discolored, no matter. They remind me of shooting with my 1956 Zeiss Ikon 35mm. the photos have an edgy feel and the shortfall in professional level perfection only makes them more appealing. The author was not after "calendar shots". He wanted to convey a sense of the place he was captivated by. And, yes, he has some scary encounters and some pleasurable times as well. A great book for the armchair adventurer or for the seasoned traveler. But, if you are a tourist and lack experience in tasting everything local in the most out of the way places and taking rough living in stride, this book may be for you. One leg of the trip was by commercial air. Buses, trains and hitchhiking were employed when it was the wise choice given the terrain and some high risk areas. He makes no excuse for using common sense.

This book is all about the photos. It's a massive book, with lots of double page pictures. Unfortunately, most of them have been digitally wrecked. Well, I assume they are, because it's unlikely that during the printing process some colours did run out and nobody noticed. The pictures look like the first colour photos of the 50es who have been left in the sun ever since to have some colours bleach out. The title image of the book already gives you a hint of what to expect, and the author's website has more of it. Unfortunately, I didn't check it before ordering. If you like underexposed pictures with not much colour except the greenish skies, this book is for you - I'll return it.

I grew up in a cult. A real cult. Most people don't realize it is one, and I don't like to talk about it. I never do. But I grew up being brainwashed and indoctrinated. Believe this... Think that... These people are evil... I always knew deep down that something was off, REALLY off, but when things are whispered in your ear from the time you are a child, and they are the only things that are whispered year after year, who asks questions? Not me! In fact, the first time my "religion" was attacked I ignored it. Almost 10 years later it was attacked again, and that time it caused tremendous upheaval. I sat there listening to it, knowing, absolutely, that it was true, but denying it anyway. It really is amazing what the human mind will go through...the extents to which it reaches...to protect itself from fear, doubt, and insecurity. By that point, I was even deeply bitter about my religion, and had been inactive for years, and yet I still denied all of it.It took me months to come around. Months of the words running through my mind again and again. Months before I admitted to myself what I'd always known. That all of it was a load of trash. That was years ago, and I'm still not over it. This really isn't the appropriate time or place, but on my blog I recently reviewed a book called Panorama that nearly had me raving from a few stray sentences about my aforementioned cult. So trust me, I get it! The truth about what you've been indoctrinated with is hard to face, and nobody wants to do it, not even me.But I also happen to know that the happiest years of my life have been the years since I was finally forced to figure out for myself what I believe, what I want, and where I want to go. This book was incredibly, PROFOUNDLY accurate. It isn't an easy read, and the concepts will likely make many people balk. However, that means little to how critical the information is, and how much it could change the entire trajectory of a life.

I think this is a great resource for those looking to develop a systematic approach to life, rather than merely taking what comes to them.

Too many people float through life, not knowing who they are or what they want, and without any action to try make something of their life. In this book I was introduced to the concepts of objective function, ideologies, and standards of evidence. I see how they can be used to understand what a person believes and why they might believe it. Although, I believe there may be some danger in tearing apart your current ideologies, to examine them, I feel the last half of the book that concentrates on changing who you are and changing your self-concepts so that you can be the best you for performing your objective function can be very useful.

A unique and fun spin on a life reference manual. Not overly idealistic - this book solicits just the right mix of deep questions and simple checklists

I thoroughly enjoyed The Pragmatist's Guide to Life. I've read through the entire book, and am now starting over from the beginning with my own notes and observations. I found the discussion of the different types of friendships, in Step 4, to be especially helpful. I'm so impressed with this book that I ordered 5 additional copies as gifts to my children and significant other. I highly recommend the book!

There aren’t any or enough organizations or materials that help people decide for themselves what they want to believe, what their values are, and what they want to achieve with their lives. This book explores all these topics and more. A must read for anyone who wants to understand who they are and better yet, who they want to be.

If you are ready to get real with yourself and answer some tough questions.... this book delivers. Shouldn’t we all take the time to ask ourselves, what we really believe and why? And then, be willing to change our minds once new information is presented. I especially appreciate that this book presents both sides to the arguments, and then let’s you decide. Let’s not go about life blindly following the person in front of us. It is time for us all to think for ourselves, decide who we are, what we stand for and then intentionally present our voices to the world. This book inspires you to do just that.

This is the best book to confront life's biggest questions. The co-authors do a brilliant job of helping the reader develop their own answers. A must-read!

We Who Dared to Say No to War: American Antiwar Writing from 1812 to Now, by Thomas E. Woods

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This history of America in anti-war writing, "coedited by a man of the left (Polner) and a man of the right (Woods)," is an insightful, relevant and varied collection that mines a strong tradition of American protest and principle. Covering the War of 1812 through "Iraq and the War on Terror," the editors provide a brief background essay for each before ceding the page to essays, interviews, letters, poems and photos from the past 200 years. Contributors include Daniel Webster, Stephen Crane, Eugene V. Debs, Helen Keller and Howard Zinn, as well as presidents and other government officials, mothers, social justice activists, poets and songwriters. Parallels among wars and the present moment are easy to find, and the many warnings hang heavy, given the ambiguous aftermath of America's conflicts. Eisenhower's 1961 warning against the abuses of "the military-industrial complex" is a standby centerpiece worthy of another look, but much of the material is just as interesting, informative and impassioned. Foregoing any dry lessons, this history-in-protest is a valuable read for study and conversation in advance of the 2008 presidential election, and should be of interest to a wide audience not limited to history buffs, antiwar activists, and those seeking perspective on today's war. From School Library Journal

History repeats itself, and Polner and Woods (The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History) remind us that both Leftist dissent against jingoism and Rightist opposition to governments swollen by war run throughout American history. The authors present writings by thinkers and activists, from the War of 1812 to the Iraq War. Daniel Webster thunders against the draft of 1814; Abraham Lincoln denounces President Polk's lies about the war in Mexico as "the half-insane mumbling of a fever dream." Even less controversial wars had opponents; included pieces range from the religious and pacifist writings against the Civil War to a statement from World War II draft—resister David Dellinger. The pieces are arranged chronologically and include moral and legal statements, accounts by activists and veterans, and the traditional letters written by mothers. The book would have been even more powerful had it featured writings by minorities and about the wars on American Indians. A five-page list of antiwar films is also included. Recommended for larger public libraries and all college libraries.—Duncan Stewart, Univ. of Iowa Lib., Iowa City Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. I have just finished reading, "We who dared to say no to war: American antiwar writing from 1812 to the present," edited by Murray Polner and Thomas Woods. It was a breath of fresh air in our present climate of fetid war fever. Let me say that it is not the American history you find in taught in school. The anti-war writings are not just from the usual run-of-the-mill pacifists like Howard Zinn and the Berrigan brothers, but include some of the most prominent figures in our history, including John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Robert Follette, William Jennings Bryan, Robert Taft, Henry Wallace, Jane Addams, Helen Keller, Pat Buchanan, and Julia Ward Howe, who gave us both Mother's Day and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and Katherine Lee Bates who wrote "America the Beautiful."The writings are surprisingly relevant to modern politics. Most interesting are the primary-source materials dealing with the War of 1812, which was an invasion of Canada. Webster and Adams both railed against this war as a violation of everything the Declaration of Independence stood for. Many of the writers refer to the Americans' penchant for war and how easily politicians can stir them up. They not only make a strong moral case against war but refer to the commercial pressures behind the war. I did not know, for example, that northern manufacturers were eager for Lincoln to secure southern markets.I noted that several presidents, like Lincoln, who stood out against the Mexican-American War, and Woodrow Wilson dropped their anti-war stance once elected to office. Sound familiar?Especially relevant were the wars against Mexico and the Philippines. Modern anti-war activist often refer to those crimes. The Libertarians have a very strong showing in this anti-war tradition. Paul Craig Roberts of the National Review writes: "Why did Bush destroy Iraq?" He writes: "Every reason we have been given for the Iraqi invasion has proved to be false...."Despite all the hoopla about democracy and elections, no Iraqi government has been able to form and the country is on the brink of civil war. Some Middle East experts believe that violence will spread throughout the region."The brutal truth is that America's responsibility is extreme. We have destroyed a country and created political chaos for no reason whatsoever."Seldom in history has a government miscalculated as badly as Bush has in Iraq. More disturbingly, Bush shows no ability to recover from his mistake. All we get from him is pigheaded promises of victory that none of our military commanders believe."Writer Harvey Wasserman, in an article entitled: "Four bloody lies of war from Havana 1898 to Bagdhad 2003," writes:"A mirror image of the earlier war in the Philippines, Vietnam may rank as the greatest of all American catastrophes. It split and alienated a generation, poisoned American politics, spawned a toxic cadre of dirty tricksters, and marked the downturn of the American economy. The war destroyed Johnson's Great Society and has rendered every American tangibly poorer in more ways than can be counted.""Nixon's 'dirty trickster' disciples Karl Rove and Dick Cheney have now poisoned the nation with yet another ghastly lie of war. Their hopeless Iraqi slaughter has become the modern definition of cynical deceit, human butchery, and economic ruin. Exactly what will happen to us and to the liars that have dragged us into this latest bloody quagmire remains to be seen."But history does not indicate a pretty outcome."Libertarian Llewellyn Rockwell, Jr. writes in "The Glory of War:""The bloom on the rose of war eventually fades, leaving only the thorns." He says war give meaning to the lives of Americans, acting like a devil's sacrament. "It promised to bind us not with God but with the nation state. It grants not life but death. It provides not liberty but slavery. It lives not on truth but on lies, and these lives themselves are said to be worthy of defense. It exalts evil and puts down the good. It is promiscuous in encouraging an orgy of sin, not self-restraint and thought. It is irrational and bloody and vicious and appalling. And it claims to be the highest achievement of man."It is worse than mass insanity. It is mass wallowing in evil.""And then it is over. People oddly forget what took place. The rose wilts and the thorns grow but people go on with their lives.... Maybe in a few years, once the war is out of the news forever and the country we smashed recovers some modicum of civilization, we can revisit the event and proclaim it glorious. But for now, let's just say it never happened."I have found a new Bible. This book will save your soul.

Reading through this collection of anti-war writings was one of the most self-developing, introspective things I've done in awhile. The book is also very entertaining; it is lively, gripping, and emotional. Some of the writers are very vivid with their dialect and I believe the writings bring a bold sense of individuality, urgency, and determination for what is "just", that I haven't felt in awhile. Both authors present a wide assortment of writings from different political views: socialists, anarchists, libertarians, conservatives, leftists, Christians, poets, and musicians. With all one thing in common, contempt for mass slaughter, irresponsible nationalism, and government lies. One can learn a great deal about history by foraging through this book. e.g. I learned about Madison's War of 1812, that Lincoln opposed the Mexican war, that Andrew Carnegie was an anti-imperialist and offered to buy the Philippines from the U.S., so the Filipinos could have their independence, saving many from death by war. There's a lot of history in here. The writers and speakers presented in the book range from historians, congress(wo)men, critics, political pundits, mothers, foreign policy experts, etc. Helen Keller has an essay in this book.A very compelling read.

This book is excellent. It cuts directly through mountains of false education and propaganda, and looks at the real interets of our people and our country, and should be a wake up call to every American to stop supporting the culture of death that totally unnecessary wars have inflicted on us. There have been times when we needed to fight, but relatively speaking they have been few, and far more often we have gone to war and slaughtered ourselves and others with no cause whatsoever. The culture of war and the culture of death have overtaking our country with great power and it is well past time to stop it. Mr. Power and Mr. Woods have done an outstanding job is bringing this truth to light.

I love the intellectual diversity, the summaries by the editors, even the introduction had me hooked from the start.
