Jet Li recommended this book on his Facebook page, so I bought 2, one for me and one for a friend. The book is filled with 365 things we can do to change the way we live in the world today. A thought provoking book that doesnt just tell you what you can do but it helps you in HOW to really do it. I wish this book was introduced to children in school. They have such creative little minds and can amaze me with the solutions they can come up with if just given the chance. If you are into change or would like to start a change in your life then get this book. It is amazing to think if everyone just picked one or two things to do in the book how much can get accomplished. I was very pleased with this purchase and hope the friend I sent the other one likes it too.

This product did come to me on time, and was in good condition, however the content of the book was not what I was expecting. I was looking for simple ways that everyone can make a difference without breaking the bank, or having to become a full time superhero just to succeed in making that difference, and it was not this by any means. This book had all the things that I nor many other people could afford to do. I work in human resources and we were trying to look for something to give employees simple encouraging ways to help others, but this did not help me with that at all. Maybe for someone else this book would be helpful, but for me it sadly was not.

Love, love, love this book! A zillion ideas to make this world a better place, both locally and internationally. Be the change you wish to see...A wide range of choices and resources for "doing your part" in making the world a better place!

As I read through this book, I highlighted the pages that were of most interest to me. Now, I have ~50 ways that I personally will try to change the world. I was so impressed with this book, I ordered 12 copies to give to friends! Hopefully, they will highlight the pages that are most pressing for them and begin to take action. My only stipulation when giving the books away was that if they didn't plan to read the book and get active, they must pass the book on to someone else.

Not all the ideas are do-able or really help "change the world." Like on page 120, it describes how to play Starbucks Musical Chairs. I'm not sure how that's going to help, but there are lots of ideas in here that are actually able to be put to good use like websites to start your own petition, encouragement to adopt and take better care of yourself, and lots of others! It's a great source of websites and contact info to get yourself started in any field of interest you may have.

There truly are 365 ways to change the world. Its pretty awesome and the author addresses a multitude of passions. Its pretty great.

Really helped me. Wish I had had it the first day I got diagnosed. Wish it had more info about what to eat. Author just kind of pushes off the responsibility and tells you to go research other diets. Wish those were actually contained in here, because that is my biggest question right now is what do I eat. Still though, this book made me feel a lot better. Even though some of the info was basic, it was good reinforcement and explained it in a really easy to understand way. I also liked the affirmation of her saying you're not a bad person if you got this disease. I REALLY needed to hear the stuff in this book.

Not my absolute favorite on the topic, but very high on my list of 20+ books I've read/examined. (I gave myself permission to set aside or return to the library the ones that annoyed me early on.) It's a lot to absorb -- but so is prediabetes/type 2 diabetes a lot to deal with.This is good and thorough and reflects both the excellent writing of an experienced medical/technical writer and the personal touch of a type 2 diabetes patient.

Very helpful. Good source to refer back to from time to time. Hard to find clear, honest facts from doctors or advice on line about cirrhosis. I wish more people were educated about the subject. I found making myself "smarter" about cirrhosis helps me ask the questions that will get me the right answers. Thank god for this book.

This book has been so informative! I feel more able to manage my recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetes with the help of this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who has just received this diagnosis and doesn't know where to begin living as a diabetic.

Many of the reviews written here diss this book for not covering this or that, especially the emotional rollercoaster that can attend this or any other lifestyle changing condition. The "negatives" can also be interpretted as "matter-of-fact". She does not talk about how to get rid of the condition, but neither does she bring false hope that all of us who are type 2 diabetics can somehow be cured. It's true that some can control the condition with diet and that some who lose enough weight and are careful can reverse the diagnosis. It's not the norm, however. Most will live with diabetes and all of its possibilities, some controlling their levels with diet and pills, some with diet and insulin injections. Some will never be able to control it; some will not be willing to try. The author is not trying to bring doom and gloom or to touch every single variation on the theme. It is a refreshing dose of reality in fairly concise language.The two most important statements in the book are that I am in charge of my health care and that if I am a smoker, one of the simplest and best ways to help my treatment is to stop smoking. Taking charge of my health care made a monumental change in the level of attention that I received from my physicians and the quality of information that I received. I was suddenly treated with much more respect, and as more of a participant rather than a mere receiver of instructions to be blindly followed. My appointments changed from 8 minute data sessions to 30-45 minute discussions of how things worked and what could be tweaked to make things work better. Very important change in relationship with my main doc; it was good before, but now is great!Also remember that this is an INTRODUCTION to this condition, not the be-all and end-all of information. It helps the reader to formulate good questions to bring to their physicians and other members of their health-care team--questions that might otherwise go unasked and thus unanswered. Most of us are not well enough informed about this or any other subject when we first start learning about it.I've purchased three of these and given two of them away to newly diagnosed folks who have thanked me profusely for the great info that they've received and the hope that this book brings. It is a reality check that shares both benefits from good self-care and dangers from ignorance and neglect with this thing called type 2 diabetes. Lots of folks saw the horror stories, some folks saw the offer of light at the end of the tunnel. Look for the light. It's in there!

Even more important, both Becker and Mendosa are dedicated to empowering T2 diabetics to take control of their own bodies and treatment. At this stage of my journey, I especially appreciate Becker's ability to use analogies and humor to "translate" complex biological processes in a way that is clear but not "dumbed down", and, like Mendosa, her attitude about learning to manage one's diabetes is realistic but positive. If you have been recently diagnosed or know someone who has -- or are having trouble managing your T2 diabetes --I strongly encourage you to read this book.

When I was a practicing nutritionist, I worked in an educational program for diabetics and I appreciate how much there is to know and how important it is to know as much as possible.After reading descriptions and reviews of all the basic books offered, I chose this one to send to a close friend's husband who has Type 2 diabetes. Both went into detail about the problems that can arise in memory recovery (conflation and confabulation) if the hypnotist uses poor techniques.Hypnotized people are VERY susceptible to suggestion. Police trained to use hypnosis for memory recovery sit behind the subject so the subject can't see the questioner's body language, facial expressions, etc. They also speak in a fairly monotone voice, because vocal inflections can serve as keys. And most of all, NO leading questions!THIS hypnotist REPEATEDLY used VERY leading questions, e.g.:"[I see sheep in a field in Heaven].""Bill, do you see God?"... "What does He look like?"... "Is there a message from God? Is He speaking to you?"[Billy is talking with Jesus.]... "Can you ask Him if there's a purpose in your going back?"... "Will God or Jesus heal you now?"[Billy says he sees angels.]... "Are they your Guardian Angels, then? Are these three angels your guardians in life?"A major problem is that the use of these poor techniques leaves the book wide open to criticism that Bill may have unintentionally fabricated things in response to the suggestions of the hypnotist. I personally don't think he did, but that is a valid criticism that severely reduces the reliability of the "evidence".Also, the book has ALMOST NOTHING about heaven. Billy felt he was traveling through a tunnel several times, he saw Jesus but really only focused on his face and doesn't remember that well (he was 5). He saw angels and what he thinks were sheep but no other people or animals. There was lots of music. In one place the sky was rainbow COLORED, NOT an actual rainbow. That's pretty much it regarding heaven.I highly recommend the book My Time in Heaven by Richard Sigmund. Sigmund was dead for about 8 hours and his book has EXTENSIVE descriptions of heaven and there was no use of "memory recovery" techniques that are known to often produce distorted or false memories.

I lost my sister in September 2012. It helped me to know that we will meet again. She called out to my mom and brother. We lost our brother in 2011 and was so depressed and kept telling me it should have been her because she was the oldest child. Now I know my mom and brother was there to help her into heaven. It would have been best if I had followed the first review I read. There was very little information about Heaven, the Spirit World or what's on the other side. This is a story about two boys growing up and their family life and very little else. Sorry to be so critical, but I expected some real insight and came away with bits and pieces.

About the Author

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).   After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.   Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.   The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include Sweet Thursday (1954), The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication (1957), Once There Was a War (1958), The Winter of Our Discontent (1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America (1962), America and Americans (1966), and the posthumously published Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters (1969), Viva Zapata!(1975), The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights (1976), and Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath (1989).   Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.  Robert DeMott, editor, is the Edwin and Ruth Kennedy Distinguished Professor at Ohio State University and author of Steinbeck's Typewriter, an award-winning book of critical essays.

**Before I do my ‘review’ I have to say something re: the movie vs the book** wow..they really cut the movie in half to accommodate the story! In HS ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ next to ‘Mice & Men’ were required reading. I’m surprised I wasn’t crying on a daily basis! I haven’t read the novel since 1978, but always watched the movie..besides a couple of characters that didn’t match the book theres the subject but no comparison...so if anyone has to do any required reading and ‘Grapes of Wrath’ is one..don’t watch the movie first 😁 One more thing Dylan Baker is now my favorite narrator! (I listened as well, thank God?) What a performance..he sounded like ‘Henry Fonda to the tee! Excellent narration!Now onto a few words about this exceptional novel. Since John Steinbeck always wrote books re: the Great Depression, he had an ability to understand their fear on a daily basis. If Steinbeck were alive today, his novels would probably be very close to how they were over 75 years ago.His books, especially ‘Grapes of Wrath’ dealt with racism, extreme poverty, family problems not far from the ones today. This novel was the perfect example.The descriptive words he used in explaining their hurt, their living environment , lack of housing, etc. was spot on. I closed my eyes listening & even sometimes reading because I wanted to be there, to try and understand what the Depression years were really like..they were not ‘The Walton’s’! This was real..not knowing what tomorrow would bring for themselves or their family.I’m so glad I decided to read and listen again...every single person must read ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ and realize at one time in the 20th Century individuals were living worse than dogs & cats...and unfortunately sometimes it doesn’t sound too far from reality today.I’ve been honored to read a masterpiece!

This book has been called Steinbeck's masterpiece, and it's not hard to see why.The Grapes of Wrath is so completely, so guturally human that it's practically impossible not to become engrossed in the life stories of the main characters. Some have complained that the characters are flat, that there is little growth. I find this only partially true. There is much to read between the lines. One who reads closely can find much growth in the characters of Ma Joad, Rose of Sharon, Tom, and even Al. Then there is the former preacher, Casy, whose growth occurred before the Joads' story even began -- but Steinbeck offers glimpses of that growth in his stories to the Joads.This careful examination of the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the effects of corporatism and the ensuing expansion of poverty is insightful and heart-rending. Migrant farmers find themselves picking fruit and vegetables to sell for mere pennies a day, meanwhile they are unable to even feed their own families. They watch as corporate farms burn and destroy fruit and vegetables to keep the prices high and prevent the starving from stealing the "extra." They see acre upon acre of land go unused, but they cannot even plant a few carrots because it is owned by the banks and the migrants are charged with trespassing. The "Okies," as they are called, are treated worse than animals. Families break apart and the old, sick, or very young die of malnutrition and sickness. Meanwhile, the corporate farms and banks continue to put small farms out of business and scheme to keep prices high and wages low. The stark contrast can be seen in a corporate farm owner, decked out in gold chains, wryly offering work to the desperate Joads in the midst of a strike.I have heard it said that it is only in recent years that people are crying "class warfare." The Grapes of Wrath is a poignant example of class warfare before the term was even coined. This book is a time capsule of times passed -- and history will repeat itself if we don't learn from the lesson Steinbeck has to teach.

Can’t wait to finish this! I saw the movie version when I was 12 and to this day(59yrs old) Grapes of Wrath continues to be one of the most impactful works in my life? Admittedly movie versions and the book are different but there is no value lost. For times sake I am utilizing Audible and doing some reading. The main narrator sounds similar to Henry Fonda! The story is gritty,at times sad, maybe depressing to some. But I find hope,honesty and resiliency and the strength of family as the main themes. The Depression and the dust bowl era affected that part of the country , for many their lives were changed forever but for many there was a rebirth and relocation that showed the strong spirit that carried them to the next chapter of their lives. A must read, if any have ever come from a background of poverty and having to fight and scrape for anything, you will feel the connection here.

This edition is fantastic with its detailed introduction to Steinbeck, the influences in his life which led him to writing this book, his struggles with other writings he didn't have published.....Too unfortunate that HS AP & Lit101 students couldn't have this well presented information a couple decades ago, when we were forced to read the book & regurgitate highfalutin claptrap.

This is not Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. What a waste of money

I've read it several times. A hauntingly, achingly, astonishingly graceful work deserving of the Pulitzer received as well as contributing to the later Nobel Steinbeck received for his work as a whole. Anyone who researches the history of that time and the locales knows the veracity and honesty of the book. A novel, yes but so much more. It is an in-depth symphony depicting circumstances, thoughts, emotions, and actions of the Joad family and those whom they meet in their long westward journey. It is Exodus, and a 20th century re-enactment of our American pioneer ancestors as they had moved west earlier.The story is one of the more profound stories you will ever read! Too bad there only five stars available to rate it as it deserves ten!
