Just received my copy of The ACT Approach, which luckily I pre-ordered. Perusing this book and appreciating the way it has been laid out, which gives so much insight to what we do as ACT therapists, coaches, consultants. One of the beauties of this, for those of us who were not trained in CBT, is the way in which it explains CBT terminology and makes it all so rapidly accessible. I also deeply appreciate the very clear and straightforward ways the authors have enlightened us to Relational Frame Theory, which is often offered in such an obscure fashion as to be incomprehensible. From an ACT perspective, it lays out the work in simple, fun ways that lighten the load. The use of the ACT Matrix and Kevin Polk's (ACT Matrix creator) input really enhances the work. This is a "KISS" book and one I highly recommend to both novice and seasoned ACT practitioners. It is a "must" on our shelves of beloved ACT texts. Thank you, Tim and Jessica, for an amazing job.

I like all of Moceanu's Go-For-Gold books - as father of a 8-y old aspiring gymnast. She devours them too, avidly, reading at levels much higher than her grade. Moceanu's books are not only about gymnastics, although there's plenty of this too, but also about building friendships, differentiating between true and false friends, teamwork, and striving for goals. And yes, even introductory romance. I encourage parents to read the books too - they provide plenty of grist-for-the-mill for family discussions.

This is a brilliant book that is must reading for all who want to understand the tragedy that is the Syrian civil war. It is full authentic voices speaking from the heart about the excitement of a revolution, the terrible civil war that resulted, the horrors of war, as well as the challenges and opportunities of refugees. The book does an outstanding job of organizing those voices into a broad narrative and letting them speak for themselves. One challenge of the book is that is only telling one side of the civil war and you really do not hear the voices of those who support the Assad regimne not those that have turned to violent extremism. That said, this is a book that is easily the best I have read on the Syrian civil war and is brilliant cautionary tale that I strongly recommend for all those interested in the middle east.

This book is remarkable. I read the entire thing in 24 hours because it draws you in from the beginning. In somewhat chronological order, the book shares stories from Syrians detailing the era before the conflict, the protests, the regime's response, flight from Syria, etc. The book's style reminds me of Humans of New York. It is so raw and authentic that I found myself feeling all of the emotions along with the Syrians portrayed. The humanizing perspective that the author gives helps readers imagine what it would have been like to be there. It evokes empathy and understanding in a way that only the most talented writers can. I have such deep respect for Syrians, and this book honors their stories and experiences so well.

I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who is interested in learning about what happened in Syria. Wendy Pearlman provides a brief background of the socio-political context of the uprising and civil war but leaves the reader to learn directly from the reflections of those who have lived it. The book is built around hundreds of interviews with Syrians woven together chronologically to transport the reader from the feelings of hope and release that the Arab Spring unleashed to the sense of betrayal at the hands of the international community to the feelings of loss and alienation of a people who have been forced to rebuild their lives countless times. Ultimately, what the reader emerges with is the conviction that no one is fully a victim nor fully a perpetrator of violence and that it is not our place to judge whether or not the revolution was "worth it" in the end. Pearlman's thoughtful tribute to Syria serves as a reminder that the only people who can speak about Syria are the Syrians themselves. Thank you to the author for bringing the voices and stories of so many Syrians to the readers of this book, and thank you to each of the men and women who were willing to share their experiences with the world.

For anyone trying to understand - truly understand - the complexities of the Syrian conflict, this is a must-read. By weaving stories from real people, the author is able to provide a rich, textured, and complex understanding of Syrians, and how the conflict has affected them (and the rest of the world). Further, Pearlman's ability to take hours of interviews and compress them into their essence makes this a compelling read. Put simply, this is one of the best books that I've read in the last several years. I finished the book in two days and I have a much richer understanding of the conflict as a result.

Far too many years have gone by with this horrific story not being told. "We Crossed A Bridge And It Trembled" finally gave us a personal insight to what extremes these people, young and old have endured. Ms. Pearlman's dedication to visit the Syrians in many different locations gives the reader a small window into what has been happening for years. Hopefully, she will continue her interviews so people around the world will finally wake up and see what the Assad regime has done to millions of displaced Syrians.

There is something powerful about hearing people tell their stories and Wendy Pearlman did an excellent job in how she helped many Syrians share their powerful accounts. Like Studs Terkel, she got out of the way and lets the reader and the story teller connect directly. I would have given five stars, but I wanted to hear more and found the book a bit short. Maybe, for some, this is an advantage.

I love Sharon Olds. This book has less of a narrative theme than her other books of poetry. It praises, in her incomparable way, the everyday items that make up our lives. You might think writing about menstruation or birth control would be boring or even distasteful, but Olds is always minutely descriptive and shockingly enthusiastic. Even when some of these poems seem less polished, there are so many original odes that you will find much to admire here. And it is on the verge of daring--like so much of her poetry.

Totally over the top poet. She includes the most personal details (!).

Very clever poet with great sense of humor ...a real "women's" poet!!

I can't really describe how much I love the way that Sharon Olds writes her odes but this book is worth buying.

I have the first edition of this book but wanted the revised one. Has some topics not covered in the first. Each topic written clearly and interestingly.

Well written systematic theology guide with some bias toward Baptist theology and against pentecostal theology. The bias is not completely unwarranted and the book does not force it's theology upon reader.

A must read for everyone who have questions about: What does the Bible say?What has the church believed? How it fits together? The doctrinal presentationof this novel size book is 953 pages. Doctrines addressed and presented bythe editor are: Revelation, God, Humanity, Christ, Holy Spirit, Salvation, the churchand Last things.An excellent source of information and conservative explanation.

This is a superb contribution to the realm of systematic theology. It is one of the primary textbooks for theology courses at Southeastern Baptist seminary. The work is conservative and reflects Baptist doctrine. I have personally benefited from this text and commend it to all of those willing to "do the work." My only critic is the level of writing may not be applicable to the entire church, but caters toward the theologically trained. I find Wayne Grudem's work a better book to introduce systematic theology to the church.

The Book is sectioned well and is intriguing on all the various theological topics discussed!

This is essentially a reworking of earlier writings by this author from 1993 to 2013. Three chapters are reworkings of publications from 2013; the rest are drawn from earlier work.Though the author's reworkings often lean forward and at least refer to reasonably contemporary events, the book is not likely to be of much interest to people who are not closely conversant with journalism studies. To make it clear: the book is more oriented to an academic audience than to one composed of people who are interested in commentaries on the current state of, and challenges for, journalism. Add to this the fact that the author's particular interest is in imagination in journalism, and what you have is a book that is likely to be hard going for readers who do not share the author's particular concerns or angle of vision. Though I found some chapters readable and informative--notably the reworking of the author's 2004 piece "Twelve Metaphors for Journalism"--that was more the exception than the rule.

After reading What Journalism Could Be, author Barbie Zelizer writes with much experience in the teaching and understanding of what the field entails. She draws much on the study of the discipline communication and writing and its interdisciplinary cross sections from economics, history, politics, and technology. But most importantly, implementing imagination to create and share information to the public.One wonders how Zelizer goes about to explaining this key factor. She takes five major points that includes the following: one, by craft, which is the creative and innovative side of gathering data in terms of relevance; second, by political environment of news making sources; third, through technology; and fourth and fifth, economic and multi-tasking and moral consideration. These examples may appear practical and sensible, however, within 260 pages of the book, there is more to these five points. The book possesses an academic and scholarly format with sources immersed within each passage, which are helpful if one was using the book as a resource for research. There are interesting points that Zelizer makes, especially readers of the subject of history and how it intertwines with communication and journalism. She asserts that historiography may be modified by collective memory and the historianâ€™s perspective and purpose somewhat similar to how journalists write and also exhibit when news stories are shared with the their audience.Zelizer shows that the field of journalism is an ever-changing landscape that experiences transitions when imagination is a part of the creative process and that is not at all one-sided but also glares at other fields of understanding when information is disclosed to readers, be it written or shown through various media outlets. And by the time one concludes the last chapter, she is speaking to the community of academics.

This is an academic text, not likely to be interesting to people who are interested in how current events have turned journalism upside down. These essays were mostly written (in 1993 in one instance) between the years 2003-2013. That doesn't make them irrelevant, certainly they are about the history of journalism, but the world and journalism changed in the last 18 months. Everything changed. Interestingly, I am glad to no longer be a journalist and to no longer teach journalism because frankly, I wouldn't know where to start.Right now, journalism is essentially made up of Dan Rather's News and Guts and Rachel Maddow's The Rachel Maddow Show.This book is about traditional understandings of journalism. I was hoping this book would be especially timely in today's world where journalism was turned on its head and accused of being fake news while false information was worshipped as the bottom line. Real journalists turned their heads aside while outright lies were repeatedly told. Nothing prepared any of us for this world.This book emphasizes the imaginative thinking concept of journalism. It discusses the Watergate scandal but then follows it up with the modern Murdoch news Empire scandal. So this book is both timely and completely left behind. I found it excruciating to try to read this now.

This isn't a quick or light read, so be aware. Right off the bat, there are references to Marxist media critic and philosopher Raymond Williams, so you know where they are coming from. The book is a series of separate but related essays that examine various aspects of journalism that are in flux today. Of particular interest to me was the one on photojournalism which pointed out the many ways that photography can enhance journalism or deceive, using examples from recent years. Those in the business or aspiring to be In the field will probably get more out of this than the casual or interested reader, but there is still enough to make it worthwhile for anyone who is concerned with the many challenges facing those who report the news and those of us who "consume" the news.

Too pontificating for my tastes, like some scholarly type wrote it. I sort of knew this going in, but I expected that it may catch my interest and really be something different. Instead, I think it should more likely appeal just to those really into journalism and studying journalism. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, it just seems like the info is old and not very creative. It may appeal to others who are trying to break into the field.
