What's great about this book is that if you want a masterclass in craft, if you need to build from the ground up and learn how to construct your best work; this is the one for you. But if you need help with something RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND it's also the right book for you. You can read from start to finish or go directly to the chapter, (with helpful exercises), that will get you back on the right path with plot or character or pacing. Lots of books "tell" you how to fix something but don't "show" you. This does both. It also reads more like a conversation than a textbook so I was hooked from the start. Simply put, an amazing resource that every writer needs.

This isn't just a book, it is more like a college course. Both the novice and the professional writer would be educated and or provoked; you will find highlights or highlight every page. I bought a book, but I am getting an education—I only wish this book was an online class. I feel like I got too much for my money, like going to the register to pay for an expensive item and the clerk tells you it is a give away and you are the lucky recipient. In this book Verbalize, Damon Suede gives away years of experience,professional knowledge, and obviously a love for writing.P.S. I have never written a review before— I was provoked out of gratitude for this effort to help us and make us all better.

The best book on writing I have read since Bird by Bird! More than a manual, Verbalize is a brilliant, fun, funny treatise on genre fiction and how to write it and think about it, using scores of great examples. I read the book in one sitting but then went back in subsequent days and did the exercises. I will never think of verbs in the same way again! Additionally, Suede will help you clarify character and action and will make your work cook. A great addition for any reference library.

This is by far the most eye-opening craft book I've ever read. For years I've struggled with taking projects all the way to their conclusions. At some point, the stories go off the rails and I become lost as to how to move forward because my characters don't "feel" right. After reading this book, I can now see it's their core ACTION (which affects every action they take on their journey) that wasn't quite right. Properly verbalizing all of your characters actions from start to finish brings clarity and consistency to a story while also providing instant conflict. Knowing these character actions also kinda just writes your plot. Amazing. Putting Damon's exercises into action, I am already seeing true clarity on how to fix character issues, which solves plot issues, which make me more confident with writing forward to The End.

This isn't your typical plotting or GMC or character profile book. It's an entirely new way of looking at how character and plot all come down to action. Take your time with this one because each chapter will give you plenty to think about. The exercises are essential to understanding the concepts in this book, and I found each one to be both helpful and enlightening for a couple of books I've been "stuck" in.

This is a very useful, hands-on approach to writing fiction, with specific points and angles of attack per chapter and many exercises to drive Suede's points home for new and established writers alike. I am grateful that I kept notes, and went through some of the exercises. Over time I'm likely to revisit many of those, particularly when I'm stuck.And isn't that the key to how good any advise book is?I will be referencing my notes any time I get stuck writing. At first, this way of thinking about a story was a little nebulous, but by the time I hit what I now realize is the midpoint, things started clicking; those first few chapters are groundwork - foundation, wires and pipes - so that the rest of the advise structure can function. He pulls everything together in 'Finale' and the last 30% is reference material. If you're not sure you'll get enough out of the book, find it in your library. You won't know until you try. Or do what I did and read the Kindle e-sample on amazon.

If you are new to writing Romance (this can be used for all writing) then don't let this book scare you. There are many great ideas and they CAN be applied to all levels. I love that Mr. Suede broke it down to help when you get stuck. I also appreciate that he used easy to understand examples. This book is full of great, usable advice and will help you.

I've never had so many highlights in one book before Verbalize. The writing examples are stellar because they show you how it's done vs just telling you to try it in your own work after a description. This book has really made me dig deep into my characters and help me build their pasts and futures much easier than sitting around thinking w/o a direction. I'm going to read it a second time because there is so much info I know I've not kept it all in memory. One of the best craft books I've found so far.

This book almost exclusively deals with theology.If you are looking for a book that trivializes the arguments of "heretics" and presents them as straw-men simply to be knocked over, this book is probably not for you either. Anatolios succeeds in presenting the arguments of each of the authors under consideration as consistent and thoughtful theologians.However, if you are looking to expand your personal library of academic books on fourth century theology, this book should be on your desk.

After reading this book, I chose to use it as a central, organizing text for my presentation of the 4th Century controversies in a graduate course I teach on "The Trinity and Christian Salvation." There is a great deal I like about this text, and among those things is how Fr. Anatolios presents a theory of the development of doctrine in order to approach the Trinitarian controversies anew. (His theory is distinct from but not opposed to Newman's.) The upshot, I found, is that rather than having students approach the 4th Century with a fairly static mental picture of this untroubled, pristine, orthodox Church on one side and these alien, noxious, hostile heretics on the other, students were urged to see how the entire Church was involved in thoroughgoing process of reintegrating its professed and practiced faith by way of the developing arch-doctrine of the Trinity. Yes, heresies are still heresies, but rather than dismissing what was being proposed by Arius and others uncritically, Anatolios forces readers to see what they were seeing, to wrestle with their fundamental concerns, and thereby to perceive the brilliant and rigorous responses from principally Alexander, Athanasius, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine. Here is the best thing I can say about this text then: my students became better scholars with its help. So did I.If there is one thing I did not like, it had nothing to do with Anatolios's own work but rather with the presentation of the book. The font size throughout is small, which makes the text longer than it appears. It can feel like you are not making much progress, which can be frustrating, especially for students.

Khaled Anatolios, who teaches historical theology at Boston College (also his Ph.D. school) has given his reading audience a very well-plodded and readable journey through the interpretive by-ways and hi-ways of Trinitarian theology. His treatment of Athanasius of Alexandria is exceptional. Never before has such a treatment been so well done. The only other exceptional book on fourth-century pneumatological/christological controversies can be found in Michael Haykin, The Spirit of God (and John Behr, The Nicene Faith, Part 2, 2 vols; and Lewis Ayres, Nicaea and Its Legacy). Anatolios restricts his map to Athanasius, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine. This is a wise move on his part because, for one thing, it circumvents the problems that arise when you treat all three Cappadocians (the two Gregories and Basil) alongside Athanasius and Augustine. Anatolios shows that both pro-Nicene and anti-Nicene parties started from basic, same premsises. Their differences begin to emerge in the way that they define the relationship between God and Christ (and whether the Holy Spirit should be considered divine). Anatolios is able to distill large amounts of historical and theological data into a condensed, readable (and very astute) monograph without getting too bogged down in matters that could have hampered his work, e.g. treatments of Basil and Greg Naz that are already well done elsewhere). This work is highly recommended for both inquisitive lay persons (where does the Trinity come from?) and scholars alike.

Ordered this book to add to my knowledge of what the theologians are up to when they discuss the Trinity. Found the read challenged me all the way -- not a bad thing. But the 'average' (as opposed to scholarly) reader should expect to devote full attention -- sometimes re-reading and thinking -- all the way through. The book offered more than I bargained for in the information offered and the density of the text. I enjoyed the challenge; others might want to pass.

Anatolios is a new, rising star in patristic studies from Boston. What he writes is profound, careful, factual, and well worth the effort of moving with him through his argument. Anatolios is someone to watch in the future, because his work so far has been outstanding. I look forward to further books from his study.
